The 2004 XLR pairs Corvette bones with a Northstar V8 — a combo that means hydraulic top issues and the infamous Northstar head bolt failures. Expect German-car repair bills on American depreciation.
Northstar Head Bolt / Head Gasket Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: White smoke from exhaust on cold start, Coolant loss with no visible leaks, Overheating under load, Milky oil or oil in coolant reservoir, Misfires and rough idle as it progresses
Fix: Northstar head bolts pull threads from aluminum block. Proper fix requires Time-Sert or Heli-Coil thread inserts on all 20 head bolt holes, new head gaskets, resurfacing heads, cam seals, water pump while it's apart. 25-35 labor hours at a shop experienced with this engine — critical you find someone who knows Northstars.
Estimated cost: $4,500-7,500
Retractable Hardtop Hydraulic System Failures
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 50,000-90,000 mi
Symptoms: Top won't retract or raise (stops mid-cycle), Hydraulic fluid leaks in trunk area, Slow or jerky top operation, Warning messages on DIC about roof malfunction, Pump runs continuously or makes grinding noise
Fix: Hydraulic pump, cylinders, or lines fail. Pump replacement is 4-6 hours, but often multiple cylinders leak requiring 8-12 hours if you're chasing multiple issues. GM discontinued many parts; aftermarket availability spotty. Diagnostic time adds up fast — this system has 12+ sensors.
Estimated cost: $1,800-4,500
Transmission Oil Cooler Line Leaks
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 70,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: Transmission fluid spots under vehicle, Low trans fluid warning on dash, Burnt smell from engine bay, Harsh shifts or slipping if fluid level drops significantly
Fix: Metal lines rust at fittings or rubber sections crack where they run along frame rail. Access requires lifting vehicle and removing shields. Line replacement is 2-4 hours depending on which line fails. Sometimes cooler itself needs replacing (additional 3 hours).
Estimated cost: $500-1,200
Magnetic Ride Control Shock Failures
Occasional · low severity
Typical onset: 80,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Suspension warning message on DIC, Harsh ride quality, loss of adaptive damping, Clunking over bumps from failed shock mounts, Vehicle sits lower on one corner
Fix: GM's MagneRide shocks eventually fail; fluid leaks or electronics quit. Shocks are $400-600 EACH and you're looking at 3-4 hours for all four corners. Can convert to conventional shocks but requires recoding or DIC warning stays lit.
Estimated cost: $2,200-3,500
Throttle Position Sensor / Accelerator Pedal Module
Occasional · medium severity
Symptoms: Reduced engine power message, Limp mode (limited to ~30 mph), Intermittent stalling at stops, Erratic idle or surging throttle response
Fix: Electronic throttle system fails — usually the accelerator pedal position sensor module (covered by recall but many already performed). Pedal assembly replacement is 1 hour, throttle body cleaning/relearn adds another 0.5 hours. Sometimes requires new throttle body (3 hours total).
Estimated cost: $300-900
HVAC Blend Door Actuator Failures
Occasional · low severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Clicking or tapping noise from dash on startup, Air only blows hot or only cold regardless of setting, Different temps from driver/passenger sides, Recalibration cycle runs continuously
Fix: Multiple actuators control airflow; when one fails you get stuck temperatures. Actuators themselves are cheap ($50-150) but dash access varies — driver side is 2 hours, passenger side can be 4-6 hours if you have to pull the dash.
Estimated cost: $400-1,200
Steering Shaft U-Joint / Intermediate Shaft
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 70,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunk or knock when turning wheel at low speed, Steering feels loose or has play at center, Popping sound from column when going over bumps while turning
Fix: Intermediate steering shaft develops wear in U-joint or splines. Covered by recall initially but wears again over time. Replacement shaft is 2-3 hours labor. Important for safety — excessive play affects steering precision.
Estimated cost: $500-800
Owner tips
Change coolant every 30k with GM-spec Dex-Cool to maximize head gasket life — contaminated coolant accelerates head bolt failure
Exercise the retractable top monthly even in winter; hydraulic seals dry out from non-use
Run premium fuel only — Northstar tune is aggressive and carbon buildup causes valve issues on regular
Budget $2k/year for unexpected repairs after 80k miles — parts availability is declining and complexity is high
Only for enthusiasts who wrench themselves or have a Northstar specialist on speed-dial — gorgeous car but maintenance costs exceed the $15k-20k purchase price within two years for most owners.

TI AUTOMOTIVE IS RECALLING CERTAIN FUEL PUMPS, PART NUMBERS TU456 AND TU303, SOLD UNDER VARIOUS BRAND NAMES AS AFTERMARKET AND REPLACEMENT EQUIPMENT FOR THE MOTOR VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE. THE DEFECTIVE FUEL PUMP MAY SEIZE, STOPPING THE FUEL FLOW TO THE ENGINE CREATING A STALLING CONDITION.
Consequence: A VEHICLE CRASH COULD OCCUR SHOULD THE ENGINE STALL WHILE IN USE.
Remedy: TI AUTOMOTIVE WILL NOTIFY OWNERS OF RECORD AND WILL REPLACE ANY DEFECTIVE FUEL PUMP WITH A NEW OR REWORKED FUEL PUMP FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 22, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TI AUTOMOTIVE AT 1-866-867-3759 OR LOG ON TO WWW.RECALLRESPONSE.COM.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING:TURN SIGNAL · 06V263000
2006-07-19
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE DAYLIGHT RUNNING LIGHTS (DRL), TURN SIGNAL, AND PARKING LAMPS USE THE SAME BULB. THE BULB MAY BECOME DAMAGED FROM VIBRATION WITHIN A LOOSE FITTING SOCKET OR AIR ENTERING THE BULB DUE TO AN INADEQUATE SEAL. BOTH OF THESE CONDITIONS WILL CAUSE THE BULB TO BURN OUT PREMATURELY.
Consequence: IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR, THE DRIVER WOULD NOTICE THAT THE ARROW IN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WOULD FLASH FASTER THAN NORMAL WHEN THE TURN SIGNAL IS ACTIVATED. THE LOSS OF THE DRL AND TURN SIGNALS COULD FAIL TO WARN OTHERS OF THE DRIVER'S PRESENCE OR INTENTIONS AND COULD LEAD TO A VEHICLE CRASH.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SOCKET AND BULB IN BOTH LAMPS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 31, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339.
CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 124, 'ACCELERATOR CONTROL SYSTEMS.' IF ONE OF THE TWO ACCELERATOR PEDAL RETURN SPRINGS FAILS AND THE TEMPERATURE IS -22 DEGREES F TO -40 DEGREES F, THE ENGINE MAY NOT RETURN TO IDLE WITHIN THREE SECONDS, AS REQUIRED.
Consequence: IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR, GREATER BRAKE PEDAL FORCE AND A LONGER DISTANCE MAY BE REQUIRED TO STOP THE VEHICLE.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL ASSEMBLY. THIS RECALL BEGAN ON MARCH 8, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339 OR PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668.
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS · 04V525000
2004-11-03
CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES WERE PRODUCED WITH ONE OR BOTH REAR BRAKE HYDRAULIC LINES THAT CAN COME IN CONTACT WITH OR BE AFFECTED BY HEAT FROM THE LEFT ENGINE EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND THE LEFT EXHAUST PIPE. THE BRAKE FLUID COULD REACH ELEVATED TEMPERATURES AND BOIL.
Consequence: IF THE BRAKE FLUID BOILS IN A REAR BRAKE LINE, THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE REAR BRAKE SYSTEM WOULD BE REDUCED WHICH COULD RESULT IN A BRAKE LINE LEAK AND LOSS OF BRAKE FLUID. IF ENOUGH FLUID LEAKS FROM THE REAR BRAKE SYSTEM SO THAT BRAKE PEDAL APPLICATION CAN NO LONGER BUILD PRESSURE TO THE REAR BRAKES. THE OPERATOR OF THE VEHICLE WILL EXPERIENCE LIMITED BRAKING WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL (1) INSPECT THE LEFT ENGINE EXHAUST MANIFOLD CLIP FOR PROPER ALIGNMENT AND PLACEMENT ON THE BODY-MOUNTED STUD. IF INCORRECT, THEY WILL REPOSITION THE CLIP ON THE BRAKE LINES AND REINSTALL THE CLIP ON THE STUD; (2) THE DEALER WILL VERIFY THAT BOTH REAR BRAKE LINES HAVE THE PROPER CLEARANCE TO THE LEFT EXHAUST PIPE. THEY WILL REPOSITION THE LINES BY BENDING AS NECESSARY; (3) DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE MACHINING TAB FROM THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL HOUSING. ALSO, DEALERS ARE TO INSPECT THE BRAKE LINES FOR WEAR IN THESE RELATED AREAS AND REPAIR OR REPLACE IF THERE IS ANY SIGN OF WEAR-THROUGH ON THE NYLON OVERCOATING. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JANUARY 18, 2005. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2239 OR CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438.
STEERING:LINKAGES · 04V273000
2004-06-09
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES INVOLVED IN THIS CAMPAIGN, THE LOWER CONTROL ARM BALL STUD NUT/WASHER ASSEMBLIES WITH WASHERS WERE MADE OF THE WRONG MATERIAL. THE WASHERS MAY FRACTURE AND BECOME LOOSE OR FALL AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE, REDUCING CLAMP LOAD. SEPARATION OF THE CONTROL ARM BALL STUD AND STEERING KNUCKLE, DUE TO DISENGAGEMENT OF THE TAPERED ATTACHMENT AND RETAINING NUT, IS POSSIBLE.
Consequence: IF THE CONTROL ARM SEPARATES FROM THE KNUCKLE, THE AFFECTED CORNER OF THE VEHICLE WILL DROP AND THE CONTROL ARM WOULD BE FORCED DOWNWARD, CONTACTING THE WHEEL. THE AFFECTED WHEEL COULD TILT OUTWARD AND CREATE A DRAGGING ACTION THAT WOULD TEND TO SLOW THE VEHICLE AND CREATE A TENDENCY FOR THE VEHICLE TO TURN IN THE DIRECTION OF THE AFFECTED WHEEL. IN EXTREME SITUATIONS, THE AFFECTED WHEEL ASSEMBLY COULD SEPARATE FROM THE VEHICLE. SEPARATION OF THE WHEEL ASSEMBLY WOULD ALSO SEVER THAT WHEEL;S HYDRAULIC BRAKE HOSE AND RESULT IN DIMINISHED BRAKING PERFORMANCE OF THE VEHICLE, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE BALL STUD JOINTS AND MEASURE THE TORQUE OF THE NUT FOR ALL FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARMS IN ALL MODELS AFFECTED AS WELL AS THE REAR LOWER CONTROL ARMS ON THE XLR AND CORVETTE. IF THE TORQUE IS NOT AT SPECIFICATION, THE DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE BALL STUD, THE KNUCKLE, AND THE NUT. IF THE TORQUE IS AT SPECIFICATION, THE DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE NUT/WASHER ASSEMBLY ONLY. THE RECALL WILL BEGIN ON AUGUST 25, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339 OR CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438.
