The 2014 XTS Vsport with the LF4 3.6L twin-turbo V6 is a solid luxury sedan when maintained, but the high-performance engine has notorious carbon buildup issues and the 6T70 transmission runs hot, leading to premature failures if fluid isn't serviced religiously.
Direct Injection Carbon Buildup Leading to Misfires and Loss of Power
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 60,000-90,000 mi
Symptoms: rough idle especially when cold, misfires on multiple cylinders, reduced power and hesitation under load, P0300-P0306 codes
Fix: Intake manifold removal and walnut blasting of intake valves. 6-8 hours labor depending on tech experience with these engines. Some shops go media blasting route which adds time.
Estimated cost: $800-1,400
Transmission Oil Cooler and Line Leaks
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 70,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: transmission fluid pooling under vehicle, burnt ATF smell, slipping or delayed shifts, fluid level dropping rapidly
Fix: Oil cooler assembly replacement plus lines if corroded. The Vsport generates serious heat and the 6T70 cooler is undersized. 3-4 hours labor, requires fluid flush after repair.
Estimated cost: $600-1,200
Timing Chain Stretch and Camshaft Actuator Failure
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 80,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: rattling on cold start that fades after warmup, check engine light with P0010-P0013 codes, rough running and poor fuel economy, severe cases result in jumped timing
Fix: Timing chain replacement on both banks plus actuators and guides. Major job requiring front engine disassembly. 12-16 hours labor. If neglected, can bend valves requiring head work.
Estimated cost: $2,800-4,500
Piston Ring Land Cracking and Oil Consumption
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 90,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: excessive oil consumption (1 qt per 1,000 mi or worse), blue smoke on startup or acceleration, loss of compression on one or more cylinders, carbon fouling on spark plugs
Fix: This is the killer issue. Ring land failure on LF4 engines from detonation or carbon buildup requires short block replacement or full engine rebuild. 20-28 hours labor depending on route taken.
Estimated cost: $6,500-11,000
Transmission Mount Failure
Common · low severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: clunking when shifting from park to drive, excessive vibration at idle in gear, harsh engagement into reverse, visible sagging or torn rubber on mount
Fix: Replace the driver-side transmission mount. The Vsport's extra torque accelerates wear. 1.5-2 hours labor, straightforward job.
Estimated cost: $250-450
High Pressure Fuel Pump Failure
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 80,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: extended cranking before start, loss of power under boost, P0087 fuel pressure too low code, stumbling or cutting out under wide-open throttle
Fix: HPFP replacement on the direct injection system. Located on back of engine, requires intake work for access. 4-5 hours labor.
Estimated cost: $1,200-1,800
Owner tips
Change transmission fluid every 40,000-50,000 miles religiously — the 6T70 behind 410 hp runs hot and fluid degrades fast
Use Top Tier fuel only and consider Italian tune-ups or periodic intake cleaning to delay carbon buildup
Monitor oil consumption closely after 80,000 miles — catching ring issues early can save the engine
Keep an eye on coolant level; small leaks can cause localized hot spots that crack ring lands under boost
Buy one if you can verify meticulous maintenance history and budget $2,000-3,000 for deferred maintenance — when maintained properly they're quick and comfortable, but neglected examples become money pits fast due to the high-strung turbo engine.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Cadillac XTS vehicles manufactured February 14, 2012, to August 22, 2014, and 2014-2015 Chevrolet Impala vehicles manufactured November 5, 2012, to September 2, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the electronic parking brake piston actuation arm may not fully retract causing the brake pads to stay partially engaged.
Consequence: Brake pads that remain partially engaged with the rotors may cause excessive brake heat that may result in a fire.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the electronic parking brake software, free of charge. The recall began on October 28, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 14471.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Cadillac XTS vehicles manufactured April 11, 2013, to June 27, 2013, and 2014 Chevrolet Impala vehicles manufactured May 13, 2013, to November 5, 2013. The affected vehicles may have left the factory with the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) set to "manufacturing mode."
Consequence: In manufacturing mode, the vehicle's air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of occupant injury.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers are to reprogram the SDM to the correct mode, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in September 2014. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 14532.
STEERING · 14V409000
2014-07-02
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014 Buick Regal, Cadillac XTS, Chevrolet Camaro and Chevrolet Impala vehicles. Improperly torqued fasteners may cause the steering intermediate shaft and the steering gear and/or the lower control arm and the lower ball joint to separate.
Consequence: If any of the components separate, the vehicle may have a loss of steering, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: GM began to notify owners on June 27, 2014, and dealers will inspect the fasteners for correct torque, correcting them as necessary, free of charge. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-458-8006 (Cadillac) or 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet). GM's number for this recall is 14378.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Cadillac XTS vehicles manufactured February 14, 2012, through March 7, 2014. In the affected vehicles, a cavity plug on the brake booster pump connector may dislodge allowing corrosion of the brake booster pump relay connector.
Consequence: The corrosion of the brake booster pump relay connector may cause a resistive short and melt the connector, increasing the risk of a fire.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will apply sealant to the connector cavity plugs, re-route the vacuum pump vent hose and replace the front body wiring harnesses as needed, free of charge. The recall began on April 7, 2014. Owners may contact Cadillac at 1-866-982-2339. GM's number for this recall is 14062.
