Replace the transmission range sensor on a 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV to restore proper gear position detection and transmission control module communication.
Warnings
⚠️The high voltage battery system contains lethal voltage. Follow all manufacturer safety protocols for high voltage system isolation before beginning work.
⚠️Vehicle must be properly supported on lift or jack stands rated for electric vehicle weight (4100+ lbs). Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
⚠Transmission fluid may be hot if vehicle was recently operated. Allow minimum 30 minutes cool-down time.
⚠The transmission range sensor provides critical input to the powertrain control system. Improper installation or calibration will prevent vehicle operation.
ℹ️This procedure requires transmission fluid level verification and may require scan tool recalibration after sensor replacement.

Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and activate electronic parking brake
- Verify 12V battery is fully charged (critical for maintaining control module memory during repair)
- Using OBD-II scan tool, document any existing DTCs related to transmission range sensor (P0705, P0706, P0708, P0709)
- Follow manufacturer lockout/tagout procedure to disable high voltage system if required for access
- Disconnect negative terminal of 12V auxiliary battery and wait 2 minutes for system discharge
- Raise vehicle on lift or support securely on jack stands, ensuring level positioning
- Remove driver side front wheel and inner fender liner for improved access to transmission
- Place drain pan under transmission drain plug location
Procedure
- 1Drain transmission fluidLocate transmission drain plug on bottom of transmission case. Clean area around drain plug. Using appropriate socket, slowly loosen drain plug and allow fluid to drain completely into collection pan. Remove and inspect drain plug washer for damage. Once fluid flow stops, clean drain plug threads and install new crush washer.Torque specDrain Plug34 Nm (25 lb-ft)
- 2Remove transmission pan for sensor accessStarting from rear of pan and working in criss-cross pattern, loosen all transmission pan bolts gradually (do not remove completely on first pass). Once all bolts are loose, support pan with one hand and remove bolts completely. Carefully lower pan, being aware residual fluid will spill. Remove old gasket material from pan and transmission case mating surface using plastic scraper. Clean both surfaces thoroughly with brake cleaner.Torque specPan Bolts16 Nm (12 lb-ft)
- 3Locate and inspect transmission range sensorWith pan removed, locate transmission range sensor on driver side of transmission case, connected to manual valve shaft. Take photo of sensor orientation and wiring connector routing for reference. Inspect sensor mounting area for fluid leaks, debris, or metal shavings that could indicate internal transmission damage. Note position of manual valve shaft relative to park position.ℹ️The sensor has a specific indexed orientation. Mark or photograph the position before removal to ensure correct installation.
- 4Disconnect sensor electrical connectorPress release tab on transmission range sensor electrical connector and carefully pull connector straight away from sensor body. Do not pull on wiring harness. Inspect connector pins and sensor terminals for corrosion, damage, or bent pins. Clean connector with electrical contact cleaner if contamination is present. Move connector away from work area to prevent fluid contamination.⚠Connector lock tab is fragile. Use plastic trim tool if needed to release lock mechanism without breaking tab.
- 5Remove transmission range sensor mounting boltsUsing appropriate socket, remove two sensor mounting bolts. Note bolt length and position if different sizes are used. Carefully wiggle sensor to break seal and remove from transmission case. Remove and discard sensor O-ring or seal. Inspect manual valve shaft for damage, scoring, or unusual wear patterns.Torque specSensor Bolts11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 6Prepare and install new transmission range sensorRemove new sensor from packaging and verify correct part number matches original. Install new O-ring or seal onto sensor body, lubricating lightly with clean ATF. Align sensor with manual valve shaft, ensuring internal sensor tang engages shaft correctly. The sensor will only fit in correct orientation. Verify sensor is fully seated against transmission case before installing bolts.⚠Do not force sensor onto shaft. If resistance is felt, remove sensor and verify tang alignment with shaft flat or slot.
- 7Install and torque sensor mounting boltsInstall both sensor mounting bolts finger-tight, ensuring sensor remains properly aligned. Using torque wrench, tighten bolts to specification in alternating pattern to ensure even seating. Do not overtighten as this can damage sensor body or strip aluminum threads in transmission case.Torque specSensor Bolts11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 8Reconnect sensor electrical connectorClean sensor electrical terminals with contact cleaner if needed. Align connector with sensor terminals and press firmly until lock tab clicks into place. Gently tug on connector to verify secure engagement. Ensure wiring harness routing matches original configuration and does not contact sharp edges or heat sources.ℹ️Ensure connector is fully seated. Partial connection will cause intermittent sensor faults and drivability issues.
- 9Install new transmission pan gasket and panPosition new gasket on transmission pan, ensuring all bolt holes align correctly. Apply small dabs of ATF to hold gasket in place if needed. Lift pan into position on transmission case, aligning gasket with case. Install all pan bolts finger-tight first. Beginning with center bolts and working outward in criss-cross pattern, torque bolts to specification in multiple passes (50% torque, then 100% torque).Torque specPan Bolts16 Nm (12 lb-ft)
- 10Refill transmission with fluidLocate transmission fill plug on side of transmission case. Remove fill plug. Using transmission fluid pump and appropriate adapter, slowly pump ACDelco Dexron VI ATF into transmission through fill hole until fluid begins to drip from fill hole opening. Install fill plug and torque to specification. Add additional fluid as needed through fill port based on fluid capacity specifications.⚠Use only ACDelco Dexron VI ATF. Incorrect fluid will cause transmission damage and void warranty.Torque specFill Plug34 Nm (25 lb-ft)
- 11Perform sensor relearn procedureReconnect 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal. Turn vehicle to ON position without activating ready mode. Using OBD-II scan tool, navigate to transmission control module and perform transmission range sensor relearn or calibration procedure per manufacturer instructions. This typically involves cycling through all gear positions (P-R-N-D-L) with 5-second pause in each position while scan tool monitors sensor voltage.ℹ️Relearn procedure is critical for proper sensor operation. Failure to perform relearn will result in incorrect gear position display and possible no-start condition.
Reassembly
- Reinstall driver side inner fender liner and wheel, torquing lug nuts to manufacturer specification
- Lower vehicle to ground and verify transmission pan is not leaking fluid
- With vehicle on level surface, verify transmission fluid level using scan tool procedure or dipstick if equipped
- Clear any diagnostic trouble codes that were set during repair procedure
- Re-enable high voltage system if it was isolated during repair
Verification
- Start vehicle and verify it enters ready mode without transmission-related fault codes
- Using scan tool, monitor transmission range sensor PID values and verify they match actual shifter position in all gear selections (P, R, N, D, L)
- Verify instrument cluster gear position indicator displays correctly for all shift positions
- Perform test drive and confirm smooth operation with proper gear engagement and no delayed shifts
- Recheck transmission fluid level after test drive with vehicle at operating temperature on level surface
- Perform final scan for DTCs and verify no transmission range sensor codes are present (P0705, P0706, P0708, P0709)
- Inspect transmission pan and drain plug areas for any signs of fluid leakage after test drive
