Warnings

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and set parking brake firmly
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. Loosen front wheel lug nuts while vehicle is on ground (do not remove)
  4. Raise front of vehicle with floor jack at frame crossmember
  5. Place jack stands under frame rails behind front suspension crossmember
  6. Lower vehicle onto jack stands and verify stability
  7. Remove front wheels completely
  8. Spray all ball joint castle nuts, control arm bolts, and suspension fasteners with penetrating oil and allow to soak for 15-20 minutes

Procedure

  1. 1
    Support lower control arm
    Position floor jack under the lower control arm as close to the ball joint as possible without interfering with removal. Raise jack just enough to take the load of the coil spring and support the control arm. This relieves tension on the upper ball joint and prevents the control arm from dropping when the ball joint is separated.

    Remove upper ball joint castle nut
    Remove the cotter pin from the upper ball joint castle nut. Use a socket and breaker bar to remove the castle nut from the upper ball joint stud. Do not discard the nut yet as it may be needed to draw the taper out of the spindle.

    Separate upper ball joint from spindle
    Thread the castle nut back onto the ball joint stud approximately 3 turns to protect the threads. Use a ball joint separator or pickle fork to break the taper between the upper ball joint stud and the steering knuckle. Strike the separator sharply with a hammer until the joint separates. If using a pickle fork, position it between the control arm and the knuckle. Once taper is broken, remove the castle nut completely and pivot the spindle downward away from the upper control arm.

    Remove upper control arm shaft nuts
    Locate the two bolts securing the upper control arm shaft to the frame bracket. These are accessed from inside the engine compartment. Remove the 2 nuts from the upper control arm mounting bolts. Note the position and number of shims between the control arm shaft and frame for reassembly alignment reference. Remove and tag shims by location (front or rear position) for reinstallation.

    Remove upper control arm
    Pull the upper control arm mounting bolts out from the frame bracket and remove the upper control arm assembly from the vehicle. Take care not to lose any shims or washers. Place the control arm on a clean workbench for ball joint removal.

    Press out upper ball joint
    Position the upper control arm in a ball joint press or heavy vise. Select the appropriate receiving cup and pressing adapter from the ball joint press kit. The receiving cup must be larger than the ball joint housing, and the pressing adapter must contact only the ball joint body, not the stud. Press the old upper ball joint out of the control arm, working slowly and ensuring the press remains square to avoid binding. The ball joint should press out with steady pressure.

    Install new upper ball joint
    Clean the ball joint bore in the upper control arm thoroughly with a wire brush. Position the new upper ball joint in the control arm with the grease fitting facing the correct direction (typically toward the front of the vehicle). Install the ball joint press with the pressing adapter contacting the outer housing of the ball joint. Press the new ball joint into the control arm until it is fully seated and the housing is flush with the control arm surface. Install the new dust boot over the ball joint stud if not pre-installed.

    Reinstall upper control arm
    Insert the upper control arm mounting bolts through the frame bracket from the engine compartment side. Position the control arm onto the bolts, ensuring all shims are reinstalled in their original locations (front and rear positions as marked during removal). Thread the nuts onto the mounting bolts and tighten until snug but do not torque to final specification yet as alignment must be maintained.

    Connect upper ball joint to spindle
    Raise the steering knuckle/spindle assembly up to meet the upper ball joint stud. Guide the upper ball joint stud through the hole in the top of the spindle. Thread the castle nut onto the upper ball joint stud and tighten until the ball joint taper is fully seated in the spindle. Install a new cotter pin through the castle nut and ball joint stud, bending the ends of the cotter pin to secure.

    Remove lower ball joint castle nut
    With the floor jack still supporting the lower control arm, remove the cotter pin from the lower ball joint castle nut. Remove the castle nut from the lower ball joint stud using a socket and breaker bar.

    Separate lower ball joint from spindle
    Thread the castle nut back onto the lower ball joint stud approximately 3 turns to protect the threads. Carefully lower the floor jack to relieve spring tension on the lower control arm. Use a ball joint separator or pickle fork to break the taper between the lower ball joint stud and the steering knuckle. Position the separator between the lower control arm and knuckle and strike sharply with a hammer until the joint separates. Remove the castle nut and separate the spindle from the lower control arm.

    Remove lower control arm (if necessary)
    If your ball joint press cannot access the lower ball joint with the control arm still on the vehicle, remove the lower control arm. Remove the single through-bolt and nut securing the rear of the lower control arm to the frame crossmember. Carefully lower and remove the coil spring. Remove the front mounting bolt and nut and remove the lower control arm from the vehicle.

    Press out lower ball joint
    Position the lower control arm in the ball joint press or secure in a heavy vise. Select the appropriate receiving cup and pressing adapter from the ball joint press kit. The lower ball joint on the 1966 Corvette typically presses out from the top side downward. Position the press to push the ball joint out of the control arm, ensuring the receiving cup is large enough to clear the ball joint housing. Press the old lower ball joint out with steady, even pressure.

    Install new lower ball joint
    Clean the ball joint bore in the lower control arm thoroughly with a wire brush. Position the new lower ball joint in the control arm with the grease fitting accessible for future service. Install the ball joint press with the pressing adapter contacting the outer housing of the new ball joint. Press the ball joint into the control arm until it is fully seated and bottomed in the bore. The ball joint should be flush or slightly below the control arm surface depending on design. Install the new dust boot if not pre-installed.

    Reinstall lower control arm and spring (if removed)
    If the lower control arm was removed, position the coil spring in the lower control arm spring pocket with the spring isolator in place. Raise the control arm into position and install the front pivot bolt through the frame bracket and control arm. Install the nut on the front pivot bolt finger tight. Compress the spring using the floor jack and align the rear of the lower control arm with the frame crossmember. Install the rear through-bolt and nut, tightening until snug but not to final torque.

    Connect lower ball joint to spindle
    Use the floor jack to raise the lower control arm and guide the lower ball joint stud up through the bottom of the steering knuckle. The spindle should be positioned so that both upper and lower ball joint studs are inserted. Thread the castle nut onto the lower ball joint stud and tighten until the ball joint taper is fully seated in the spindle. Install a new cotter pin through the castle nut and ball joint stud, bending the ends to secure.

    Torque all fasteners
    With the vehicle weight now on the suspension (supported by jack stands with floor jack providing upward pressure on lower control arm to simulate ride height), torque all suspension fasteners. Due to the lack of torque specifications in the database, refer to a factory service manual or trusted reference for proper torque values for upper control arm shaft nuts, lower control arm pivot bolts, and ball joint castle nuts.     Lubricate ball joints
    Using a grease gun, lubricate both upper and lower ball joints through their grease fittings until clean grease appears at the dust boot seal. Wipe away excess grease. This ensures the new ball joints are properly packed with lubricant.

    Repeat steps 1 through 18 for the opposite side front suspension, replacing both upper and lower ball joints on that side as well.

    Reinstall wheels and lower vehicle
    Reinstall both front wheels, threading lug nuts on by hand initially. Raise the vehicle slightly with the floor jack to remove the jack stands. Lower the vehicle to the ground. Torque the wheel lug nuts to proper specification in a star pattern.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all cotter pins are properly installed and bent to prevent castle nuts from loosening
  2. Verify all suspension fasteners are torqued to specification
  3. Double-check that all shims removed from upper control arms were reinstalled in their original positions
  4. Confirm both upper and lower ball joints have been lubricated through grease fittings

Verification
