Preparation
- Park vehicle on level, solid ground and engage parking brake firmly.
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels.
- Loosen all four wheel lug nuts (1/2 turn each) while vehicle is on ground.
- Raise vehicle using floor jack at factory jacking points and support on jack stands at all four corners. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
- Remove all four wheels and set aside.
- Locate master cylinder reservoir under hood on driver side firewall and remove cap. Check fluid level.
- If fluid is dark, contaminated, or more than 2 years old, consider flushing entire system by bleeding until fresh fluid emerges at each wheel.
- Fill master cylinder reservoir to proper level with fresh DOT 4 brake fluid. Keep spare bottle nearby.
- Inspect all brake lines, wheel cylinders, and master cylinder for leaks or damage before proceeding.
- Clean area around each bleeder screw with wire brush or rag to prevent dirt entering system.
Procedure
- 1Prepare brake bleeding equipmentCut a length of clear vinyl tubing approximately 12 inches long. One end must fit snugly over the bleeder screw nipple. Place the other end into a clean glass or plastic container with 1-2 inches of fresh brake fluid in the bottom. This submerged-tube method prevents air from being sucked back into the system. Prepare clean rags to catch any drips.
- 2Begin bleeding at right rear wheelStart at the wheel furthest from the master cylinder, which is the right rear. Locate the bleeder screw on the rear four-piston disc caliper. Note: 1966 Corvettes use four-wheel disc brakes, not rear drums. It is a small hex fitting (verify exact wrench size before applying force). Place the box-end bleeder wrench on the screw and attempt a slight turn to verify it is not seized. If seized, apply penetrating oil and wait, or risk breaking the bleeder screw. Position the vinyl tubing over the bleeder nipple with the other end submerged in the container.
- 3Bleed right rear wheelHave assistant sit in driver seat. Assistant should pump brake pedal 5-6 times to build pressure, then hold pedal down firmly with steady pressure. With pedal held down, open bleeder screw 1/2 to 3/4 turn. Brake fluid and air bubbles will flow through the tube. Watch for pedal to sink to floor as fluid escapes. Before pedal reaches floor, close bleeder screw firmly (do not overtighten and strip threads). Assistant should now release pedal. Repeat this pump-hold-bleed-close cycle 5-8 times or until no air bubbles appear in the clear tubing and only clean fluid flows. Check master cylinder reservoir level after every 3-4 cycles and refill as needed to keep above halfway mark.
- 4Bleed left rear wheelMove to the left rear wheel, which is next in the bleeding sequence. Repeat the exact procedure from Step 3: attach tubing to bleeder screw, have assistant pump and hold pedal, open bleeder screw, watch for fluid flow and bubbles, close bleeder before pedal bottoms out, release pedal. Continue until no bubbles appear. Always monitor master cylinder fluid level.
- 5Bleed right front wheelMove to right front wheel. The 1966 Corvette uses four-wheel disc brakes with four-piston fixed calipers, not drum brakes at the rear. Locate the bleeder screw on the rear upper portion of the caliper body. Clean the area thoroughly. Attach bleeding tube and repeat the pump-hold-bleed-close procedure from Step 3. Disc brake systems typically require fewer cycles (4-6 repetitions) as there is less fluid volume. Continue until bubble-free fluid flows. Check master cylinder level.
- 6Bleed left front wheelMove to left front caliper and repeat the bleeding procedure. This is the final wheel, closest to the master cylinder. Perform the pump-hold-bleed-close sequence until clean, bubble-free fluid emerges. The pedal should begin to feel firmer as air is purged from the system.
- 7Perform second bleeding cycleAfter all four wheels have been bled once, repeat the entire sequence starting again at right rear, then left rear, right front, and left front. This second pass ensures any residual air trapped in the system is removed. One or two pump-hold-bleed cycles per wheel should be sufficient if first round was thorough. Monitor fluid level continuously.
- 8Check pedal feel and final inspectionWith engine off and vehicle still on jack stands, have assistant pump brake pedal 10-15 times. Pedal should become progressively firmer and reach a solid stop well above halfway to floor. If pedal remains spongy or sinks slowly, air remains in system and bleeding must continue. Check all bleeder screws are tight. Inspect each caliper for signs of leaking around bleeder screws or piston seals. Wipe any spilled brake fluid from components and painted surfaces immediately.
- 9Top off master cylinder and reinstall capFill master cylinder reservoir to the proper level mark (approximately 1/4 inch below top of reservoir neck). Do not overfill. Wipe any spilled fluid from reservoir exterior and master cylinder body. Reinstall master cylinder cap securely.
- 10Reinstall wheels and lower vehicleReinstall all four wheels, threading lug nuts on by hand first to prevent cross-threading. Snug lug nuts in a star pattern but do not fully tighten yet. Carefully lower vehicle from jack stands using floor jack. Once vehicle weight is on ground, torque lug nuts to the factory specification (approximately 65-80 ft-lbs for standard 5-lug wheels; knock-off wheels require a different procedure) in a star pattern. Remove jack stands and lower jack completely. Remove wheel chocks.
Reassembly
- Ensure all bleeder screws are closed snugly but not overtightened (approximately 60-80 in-lbs if using torque wrench).
- Confirm master cylinder cap is installed and secured.
- Clean any brake fluid residue from wheels, calipers, wheel cylinders, and painted surfaces with water and shop rags.
- Dispose of used brake fluid according to local regulations. Never pour down drain or onto ground.
Verification
- With engine off, pump brake pedal firmly 15-20 times. Pedal must become firm and hold steady pressure without sinking. A spongy or sinking pedal indicates air remains in system.
- Start engine (if power brakes equipped, pedal will drop slightly when vacuum assist activates - this is normal). Apply firm brake pressure - pedal should remain solid.
- Perform a low-speed test drive in a safe area. Test brakes at 5-10 mph to verify proper stopping power and pedal feel before driving at normal speeds.
- Check for proper brake function at progressively higher speeds in safe conditions. Vehicle should stop straight without pulling to either side.
- After test drive, re-inspect all bleeder screws, wheel cylinders, calipers, brake lines, and master cylinder for any signs of leakage.
- Recheck master cylinder fluid level after test drive and top off if needed. Monitor fluid level daily for the first week to identify any slow leaks.
- If pedal feel is not firm and confident, do not drive vehicle. Repeat bleeding procedure or consult professional brake service.
