Preparation
- Park vehicle on level, solid ground and engage parking brake firmly
- Place wheel chocks in front of both front wheels
- Loosen rear wheel lug nuts 1/4 turn while vehicle is on the ground
- Raise rear of vehicle with floor jack at rear axle or frame lifting point
- Support vehicle securely on jack stands placed under the frame rails behind the rear axle
- Remove wheel lug nuts completely and remove wheel
- Spray penetrating oil on caliper mounting bolts and rotor set screws (if equipped) and allow to soak for 5-10 minutes
Procedure
- 1Inspect brake system conditionVisually inspect the brake caliper, rotor, brake pads, and brake hose for damage, leaks, or excessive wear. Check brake fluid level in master cylinder reservoir. If brake fluid is below the MIN line, fluid loss indicates a leak that must be repaired before proceeding. Note the position and routing of the brake hose for reassembly.
- 2Compress brake caliper pistonUsing a C-clamp or brake caliper piston tool, slowly compress the caliper piston back into its bore. Place the clamp against the outboard brake pad backing plate and the back of the caliper body. Compress slowly to push brake fluid back into the master cylinder. - 3Remove caliper mounting boltsLocate the two caliper mounting bolts on the inboard side of the caliper that attach it to the spindle support bracket. These are typically 1/2" or 9/16" hex head bolts. Remove both caliper mounting bolts completely. Note the length and position of each bolt for reassembly.
- 4Remove and support brake caliperCarefully lift the brake caliper assembly off the rotor. Do NOT disconnect the brake hose. Secure the caliper to the suspension or frame using wire or a bungee cord to prevent stress on the brake hose. If the rotor is stuck due to corrosion, tap gently around the rotor hat (center section) with a rubber mallet, alternating sides. Do NOT strike the friction surface. Thread bolts into the threaded holes in the rotor face (if equipped) to push the rotor off the hub.
- 8Clean hub mounting surfaceUse a wire brush to thoroughly clean the wheel hub face where the rotor mounts. Remove all rust, scale, and debris to ensure the new rotor sits flat. Any debris or rust buildup will cause rotor runout and brake pulsation. Clean the hub studs with a wire brush as well.
- 9Inspect wheel bearingsWith the rotor removed, inspect the inner wheel bearing and grease seal for proper lubrication and condition. Check for lateral play in the hub by grasping it at 12 and 6 o'clock and pushing/pulling. Excessive play indicates wheel bearing adjustment or replacement is needed. If bearings are dry, contaminated, or have play, wheel bearing service is required before installing the new rotor.
- 10Install new brake rotorClean the new rotor thoroughly with brake cleaner to remove any protective coating or oil from manufacturing. Slide the new rotor onto the wheel hub, aligning the holes with the hub studs. Ensure the rotor seats completely flat against the hub face. Install rotor retaining screws (if equipped) and tighten snugly.
- 11Reinstall brake pads and hardwareInstall the inboard brake pad into the caliper piston. Install the outboard brake pad with its retaining ears properly positioned. Reinstall any anti-rattle clips or shims in their original positions. Ensure both pads move freely and are properly seated.

Carefully position the caliper over the rotor and brake pads, aligning the mounting bolt holes with the spindle support bracket. Install both caliper mounting bolts and tighten in a cross pattern. - 13Reinstall wheel and lower vehicleReinstall the wheel onto the hub studs. Install lug nuts and tighten by hand until snug. Lower the vehicle until the tire just touches the ground but still supports most weight on the jack stands. Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern to proper torque specification (typically 80-100 ft-lbs for 1966 Corvette). Fully lower vehicle and remove jack stands.

The first few pumps will move the caliper piston back out to contact the new rotor. The pedal should become firm and hold pressure. - Brake pedal should be firm and not sink when sustained pressure is applied with engine running
- Test brakes at low speed (under 10 mph) in a safe area before returning to normal driving
- Listen for any unusual noises such as grinding, squealing, or rubbing during initial brake applications
- Check for vibration or pulsation during braking which would indicate rotor runout or contamination
- After 50-100 miles, re-check lug nut torque and caliper mounting bolt torque
