Remove and replace the steering column combination switch (turn signal/headlight/wiper switch assembly) on a 1966 Corvette.
Warnings
⚠️Disconnect battery negative terminal before beginning work to prevent accidental horn activation or short circuits.
⚠Use a proper steering wheel puller. Never hammer on the steering shaft as this can damage the column and bearings.
⚠Mark the steering wheel position before removal to maintain proper alignment during reassembly.

Parts
- Combination switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Steering wheel retaining nut (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake.
- Disconnect negative battery cable.
- Allow steering column to cool if vehicle was recently driven.
- Position driver's seat fully rearward for working clearance.
- Gather all tools and new combination switch before beginning.
Procedure
- 1Remove steering wheel horn contactRemove the horn button or center cap from the steering wheel (retention varies by wheel type on the 1966 Corvette; verify against the service manual). Note the horn contact spring and plate arrangement for reinstallation.
- 2Mark and remove steering wheelUsing a scribe or paint marker, mark the relationship between the steering wheel and steering shaft for proper alignment during reassembly. Remove the steering wheel retaining nut using the appropriate socket. Install a steering wheel puller and carefully remove the steering wheel from the steering shaft. Do not hammer on the shaft or wheel.
- 3Remove turn signal canceling camRemove the turn signal canceling cam from the top of the steering shaft. This is a plastic or metal cam that sits directly below where the steering wheel was mounted. It may have a C-clip retaining it to the shaft. Use needle nose pliers to remove the C-clip if present, then slide the cam off the shaft.
- 4Remove column trim coversRemove the two-piece steering column trim covers (verify exact screw count against the 1966 Corvette service manual). Remove the screws, separate the lower cover, then lift off the upper cover. The covers surround the steering column under the dash.
- 5Disconnect combination switch wiringLocate the combination switch wiring where it exits the bottom of the steering column under the dash. On the 1966 Corvette the switch wiring terminates in individual bullet/spade connectors rather than a single locking connector; carefully separate each connector and note the wire colors and routing for reinstallation.
- 6Remove combination switch retaining screwsLocate the screws securing the combination switch to the steering column (verify exact count and location against the 1966 Corvette service manual). Remove all screws using a Phillips screwdriver and retain them for reinstallation.
- 7Remove combination switch assemblyCarefully pull the combination switch assembly away from the steering column. The turn signal lever will come with the assembly. Guide the wiring harness through the column housing as you remove the switch. If the wiring is secured with clips to the column, remove these clips first.
- 8Install new combination switchPosition the new combination switch assembly onto the steering column, ensuring the turn signal lever is in the correct position. Route the wiring harness through the column housing in the same path as the original. Align the mounting holes with the column housing.
- 9Secure combination switchInstall the 3 retaining screws that secure the combination switch to the steering column. Tighten the screws evenly in a cross pattern to ensure proper seating of the switch. Do not overtighten as the housing is typically die-cast metal or plastic.
- 10Reconnect wiring and testReconnect the combination switch wiring harness connector, ensuring it clicks or locks into place. Temporarily reconnect the battery negative terminal. Test turn signal operation (left and right, and hazards if equipped) and the high/low beam dimmer function to verify proper operation before final reassembly. Note that windshield wiper operation is controlled by a separate dash switch, not the combination switch. Disconnect battery again before continuing.
- 11Reinstall column coversPosition the upper steering column trim cover around the column, then install the lower cover. Secure the lower cover with the 3 Phillips screws, tightening them snugly but not over-torquing the plastic or pot metal housing.
- 12Reinstall canceling cam and steering wheelSlide the turn signal canceling cam onto the steering shaft, ensuring it is oriented correctly with the turn signal mechanism. Install the C-clip if applicable. Align the steering wheel with the marks made during disassembly and slide it onto the shaft. Install the steering wheel retaining nut and torque to specification (verify exact value against the 1966 Corvette service manual; commonly approximately 50 ft-lbs).
- 13Reinstall horn contact and reconnect batteryReconnect the horn wire to the steering wheel horn contact. Install the horn button or center cap onto the steering wheel. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
Reassembly
- Ensure all wiring connectors are fully seated and locked.
- Verify steering wheel is properly aligned with the marks made during disassembly.
- Check that all column trim screws are tight and no tools or fasteners have been left in the column area.
- Test all functions of the combination switch before returning vehicle to service.
Verification
- With ignition on, test turn signal operation in both left and right positions. Verify signals cancel automatically after turning.
- Test headlight switch through all positions (off, parking lights, headlights, high beam).
- Test windshield wiper switch through all speed settings.
- Verify horn operates when pressed.
- Check that steering wheel is centered when driving straight and that there is no binding in the column.
