This procedure removes and replaces the front door lock actuator on a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette, requiring removal of interior door panels and access through the door cavity.

Warnings

ℹ️The 1966 Corvette did not come with electric door lock actuators from the factory. This procedure assumes an aftermarket electric lock system has been installed or is being installed.
Door panel clips are fragile and may break during removal. Have replacement clips available.
Work carefully inside the door cavity to avoid damaging window regulator mechanisms or moisture barrier.

Tools required

Phillips head screwdriverEssential
Flathead screwdriverEssential
7/16" socket and ratchetEssential
1/2" socket and ratchetEssential
Needle-nose pliersEssential
Door panel clip removal tool
Flashlight or work lightEssential
Magnetic parts tray
Wire cutters/strippers (if replacing actuator with aftermarket)

Parts

  • Door lock actuator assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification or aftermarket equivalent
  • Door panel retaining clips (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake.
  2. Disconnect negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during actuator work.
  3. Roll window completely up to prevent glass damage during door panel removal.
  4. Gather all tools and parts before beginning work.
  5. Place protective covering over door sill and adjacent body panels to prevent scratches.

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove window crank handle
Remove the window crank handle by loosening the small setscrew at the base of the handle hub using an Allen wrench. Once loosened, slide the handle off the splined shaft and set aside with the setscrew.
  2. 2
    Remove interior door handle escutcheon
Remove the interior door handle trim escutcheon by removing the single Phillips head screw at the rear edge. Carefully pull the escutcheon away from the door panel and set aside.
  3. 3
    Remove door panel fasteners
Remove the door panel retaining screws (typically located at the armrest/door pull and lower edge); exact count and locations should be verified against a 1966 Corvette factory assembly manual before removal. Place screws in magnetic tray to prevent loss.
  4. 4
Detach door panel from door frame
Starting at the bottom rear corner, carefully pry the door panel away from the door frame using a flathead screwdriver wrapped in cloth or a panel removal tool. Work around the perimeter to release all spring clips. Lift the panel upward to disengage it from the door top rail, then pull away from door. If any wiring is present at the door panel, disconnect it before fully removing the panel.
  5. 5
    Peel back moisture barrier
Carefully peel back the plastic moisture barrier film to access the door cavity. If the barrier is held with adhesive, work slowly to avoid tearing. You need access to the lock mechanism area near the door latch assembly.
  6. 6
    Disconnect actuator wiring
Locate the door lock actuator wiring connector inside the door cavity. Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the release tab and pulling apart. If the wiring is routed through the door jamb, carefully pull slack into the door cavity for easier access.
  7. 7
    Disconnect actuator linkage
Use needle-nose pliers to disconnect the actuator rod from the door lock mechanism. The actuator rod typically connects to the lock mechanism with a plastic clip or wire retainer. Remove the clip and slide the rod end out of the lock lever.
  8. 8
    Remove actuator mounting fasteners
Remove the mounting fasteners securing the actuator to the door inner structure; fastener count and socket size depend on the specific aftermarket kit installed (commonly self-tapping screws or small bolts). Verify against the kit instructions. Support the actuator while removing the second bolt to prevent it from falling into the door cavity.
  9. 9
    Extract actuator from door
Carefully maneuver the actuator assembly out through the access area in the door inner panel. You may need to angle it or temporarily disconnect additional linkage to create clearance. Take note of the actuator orientation and rod positioning for installation reference.
  10. 10
    Install new actuator
Position the new actuator in the same orientation as the original, inserting it through the access area. Align the mounting holes with the door inner structure. Thread the mounting fasteners by hand first to ensure proper alignment, then tighten until snug per the aftermarket kit's instructions. Do not overtighten as the door inner structure is relatively thin.
  11. 11
    Reconnect actuator linkage
Connect the actuator rod to the door lock mechanism lever. Install the retaining clip to secure the rod end in place. Manually operate the lock mechanism to verify the actuator rod moves freely without binding.
  12. 12
    Reconnect actuator wiring
Connect the electrical connector to the actuator, ensuring it clicks fully into place. If installing a new aftermarket actuator with different connector, splice wiring according to manufacturer instructions using appropriate crimp connectors or solder and heat shrink.
  13. 13
    Test actuator operation
Temporarily reconnect the negative battery cable. Test the actuator operation using the aftermarket door lock switch (or remote, if the installed system includes one). Verify the lock cycles smoothly in both lock and unlock directions without binding or unusual noise. Disconnect battery again before proceeding with reassembly.

Reassembly

  1. Reposition the moisture barrier against the door inner panel, pressing firmly to re-adhere the barrier around all edges.
  2. Position the door panel at the top of the door opening and hook it over the top rail.
  3. Press the panel firmly against the door frame to engage all spring clips around the perimeter.
  4. Reinstall the 3 Phillips head screws at the bottom front, bottom rear, and armrest locations.
  5. Reinstall the interior door handle escutcheon and secure with the Phillips head screw.
  6. Slide the window crank handle onto the splined shaft with the retaining clip properly positioned behind the handle, then tap the handle firmly to seat the clip.
  7. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

Verification

  • Test the door lock actuator operation multiple times using both the lock switch and key (or key fob if equipped) to verify smooth locking and unlocking.
  • Verify the interior door handle and exterior door handle operate the latch mechanism correctly without interference from the actuator.
  • Check that the window crank operates smoothly and that all door panel fasteners are secure.
  • Inspect the door panel for proper fit and alignment around all edges.
  • Verify no rattles or unusual noises when operating the lock mechanism or opening/closing the door.
