Parts

  • Fog light assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification or Guide 682-C equivalent
  • Fog light bulb × 1 — H3 55W halogen or original 1157 as applicable
  • Lens gasket × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Mounting hardware kit × 1 — Use OEM specification if original hardware damaged

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Disconnect negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts
  3. Allow fog lights to cool if vehicle was recently operated
  4. Gather all tools and replacement parts
  5. Position yourself comfortably at the front of the vehicle with adequate lighting

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access fog light assembly
Position yourself at the front of the vehicle. The fog lights are mounted in the lower front bumper area on each side. Inspect the fog light to identify the lens retaining screws and mounting bracket configuration. Remove any debris or road grime around the assembly for clear access.
  2. 2
    Remove lens retaining screws
Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the 3 screws securing the fog light lens to the housing. These screws are typically located around the perimeter of the lens. Keep screws in a safe location for reinstallation. Carefully pull the lens away from the housing.
  3. 3
    Remove bulb from socket
Reach behind the lens and grasp the bulb socket. Rotate the socket counterclockwise approximately one-quarter turn and pull it straight out from the housing. If the bulb is stuck due to corrosion, gently wiggle it while pulling. Do not force to avoid breaking the bulb.
  4. 4
    Disconnect wiring harness
Locate the wiring connector attached to the bulb socket. Press the release tab on the connector and pull it straight off the socket terminals. Inspect the connector for corrosion or damage. If corrosion is present, clean with electrical contact cleaner and a wire brush.
  5. 5
    Remove housing mounting fasteners
Using the appropriate SAE socket and wrench, remove the bolts securing the fog light housing to the mounting bracket behind the bumper (1966 Corvette uses inch-size fasteners; confirm count and size against the installed assembly). Support the housing with one hand while removing the second bolt to prevent it from falling. Note the position of any washers or spacers for reassembly.
  6. 6
    Remove housing from vehicle
Carefully pull the fog light housing forward and out through the bumper opening. Maneuver it around any brackets or obstructions. Inspect the mounting area for rust, damage, or missing hardware that should be addressed before installing the new assembly.
  7. 7
    Prepare new fog light assembly
Unpack the new fog light assembly and verify all components are present: housing, lens, bulb socket, and gasket. Install the new bulb into the socket by aligning the pins and pressing firmly until it seats. If the assembly did not come with a bulb, install the new replacement bulb at this time.
  8. 8
    Install new housing
Position the new fog light housing into the mounting location through the bumper opening. Align the mounting holes with the bracket behind the bumper. Install the 2 mounting bolts with any original washers or spacers, threading them by hand initially to ensure proper alignment before tightening.
  9. 9
    Tighten mounting hardware
Using the appropriate SAE socket, tighten both mounting bolts securely. Tighten evenly to avoid cocking the housing at an angle. The housing should sit flush against the mounting surface without gaps. Verify the lens opening is properly aligned with the bumper opening.
  10. 10
    Connect wiring harness
Reconnect the wiring harness connector to the bulb socket terminals. Push the connector on firmly until you hear or feel it click into place. Gently tug on the connection to verify it is secure. Ensure no wires are pinched or contacting sharp edges.
  11. 11
    Install lens and gasket
Place the new gasket onto the housing, aligning it with the groove or flange. Position the lens over the gasket and align the screw holes. Install the 3 lens retaining screws, threading each by hand first. Tighten the screws in a crossing pattern to ensure even compression of the gasket and prevent lens cracking.
  12. 12
    Reconnect battery and test
Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery terminal. Turn the ignition to the accessory position and activate the fog light switch (note: accessory fog lights may use a separately installed switch and/or relay rather than a factory circuit). Verify the new fog light illuminates properly with no flickering. Check that the beam pattern is correct and aimed appropriately. Verified detail (A 1966 Corvette has no electronic lighting-system warning indicators or fault monitoring; this is era-inappropriate.): Visually confirm fog light operation; the 1966 Corvette has no electronic lighting warning indicators to check.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all lens screws are tightened evenly to prevent water intrusion
  2. Verify wiring is routed away from hot or moving components
  3. Check that fog light housing is secure with no movement
  4. If replacing both fog lights, repeat procedure on opposite side

Verification

  • Turn ignition to accessory position and test fog light operation with switch
  • Verify fog light illuminates steadily with no flickering or dimming
  • Check that lens is properly sealed with no visible gaps around gasket
  • Inspect beam pattern by observing light output on a wall or garage door from 25 feet away
  • Verify no warning lights on dashboard related to lighting system
  • Ensure all tools and old parts are removed from engine bay and bumper area
