Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and chock rear wheels securely.
- Disconnect negative battery cable to prevent accidental electrical system engagement.
- Loosen front wheel lug nuts while vehicle is on ground (do not remove).
- Raise front of vehicle using floor jack positioned on front crossmember and support on jack stands under frame rails behind front wheels.

Procedure
- 1Disconnect sway bar end linksRemove the castle nuts from both sway bar end links. Use a wrench on the flats of the end link stud to prevent rotation while loosening the nut. Remove cotter pins first. Once nuts are removed, use a pickle fork or brass hammer to separate the end link from the lower control arm. Completely remove both end links from the vehicle.
- 2Disconnect outer tie rod endsRemove the cotter pins from both outer tie rod end castle nuts. Loosen and remove the castle nuts while holding the tie rod end stud with a wrench if necessary. Use a tie rod end puller to separate the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Do not hammer on the steering knuckle as this can damage the spindle bearing surfaces. Count and record the number of threads visible on each tie rod for approximate reassembly positioning.
- 3Compress and secure coil springsInstall external coil spring compressors on both front coil springs, positioning the compressor hooks evenly around the spring coils. Tighten the compressors gradually and alternately (a few turns on each side) until the spring is compressed enough to relieve all tension from the upper control arm. Remove the nut and bolt, allowing the shock absorber to pivot upward out of the way. The shock does not need to be completely removed from the vehicle unless replacement is planned. If shock bushings show wear, now is the time to replace them.
- 5Disconnect upper ball joint from knuckleLocate the upper ball joint stud where it enters the top of the steering knuckle. Remove the cotter pin and loosen the castle nut, but leave it threaded on a few turns to protect the threads. Use a ball joint separator or impact the side of the knuckle (not the stud) with a brass hammer while applying upward pressure on the lower control arm. Once the taper breaks free, remove the castle nut completely and separate the upper ball joint from the knuckle.
- 6Disconnect lower ball joint from knuckleThe lower ball joint is secured to the steering knuckle with a pinch bolt and nut through the bottom of the knuckle. Remove the pinch bolt nut and drive out the pinch bolt using a brass drift or punch. Once the bolt is removed, the ball joint stud should pull free from the knuckle. If stuck, use a pickle fork carefully inserted into the pinch slot to spread the knuckle slightly. - 7Remove upper control arm assemblyLocate the two bolts securing the upper control arm shaft to the frame brackets. These bolts pass horizontally through the frame and secure the control arm shaft. The bolts are accessible from the engine compartment side. Remove both bolts completely and carefully lower the upper control arm assembly out of the frame. Note the position of any shims present between the control arm shaft and frame for camber/caster adjustment - these must be reinstalled in the same positions unless alignment will be professionally adjusted.
- 8Remove lower control arm assemblyWith the spring still compressed and secure, locate the two horizontal bolts securing the lower control arm shaft to the frame crossmember. Remove both bolts and carefully work the lower control arm out of the frame mounts. The compressed spring will come out with the control arm. Keep the spring compressor installed and secure throughout this process. Set the control arm and compressed spring assembly on the workbench.

The upper ball joint typically presses out downward, the lower upward. Press in new ball joints ensuring they are fully seated. Next, press out the old control arm shaft bushings and press in new bushings, ensuring proper alignment of any voids or flats in the bushings with the control arm. Some bushings are directional - verify orientation before pressing. Clean all control arm surfaces with a wire brush and inspect for cracks or damage.
- 10Reinstall lower control arm to framePosition the lower control arm (with compressed spring still attached) into the frame crossmember mounts. Insert both lower control arm shaft bolts through the frame and bushings but do not torque at this time. Thread nuts on finger-tight only. The bolts must be torqued at ride height to prevent bushing wind-up and premature failure. Ensure the spring is properly seated in both the lower control arm pocket and the upper spring seat on the frame.

Reassembly
