Complete procedure for removing and replacing the headlight assembly on a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette, including sealed beam unit, retaining ring, and adjustment verification.

Warnings

Do not touch the glass face of a new sealed beam unit with bare hands as oils can shorten bulb life.
ℹ️Mark the position of the adjustment screws before removal to preserve headlight aim if only replacing a burned-out bulb.

Tools required

Phillips screwdriverEssential
Flathead screwdriver
Shop towels
Masking tape

Parts

  • 7-inch sealed beam headlight unit × 1 — Wagner 6014 or equivalent DOT-approved sealed beam
  • Headlight retaining ring × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and turn off ignition
  2. Turn headlight switch to OFF position
  3. Allow headlights to cool if recently operated
  4. Open hood and secure with prop rod

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access headlight assembly
Locate the headlight assembly behind the chrome bezel. The 1966 Corvette uses a concealed headlight system with vacuum-operated doors. Rotate the headlight switch to the headlight ON position to open the headlight doors. If the vacuum system is inoperative, the doors can be manually opened — note that with vacuum lost, the doors default to the open (up) position. Verified detail (Specific part numbers require direct manufacturer-documentation verification. The 6014 is a 7-inch sealed beam but applicability/cross-reference for the 1966 Corvette should be confirmed.): 7-inch round sealed beam unit (verify correct application part number against manufacturer documentation; common cross-reference is a 7-inch type 2 sealed beam)
  2. 2
    Remove chrome headlight bezel
Remove the screws securing the chrome headlight bezel to the headlight bucket (verify exact count and screw type against factory service documentation for the 1966 Corvette concealed headlight assembly). These screws are located around the perimeter of the bezel. Keep these screws together as they will be reused. Remove the bezel and set aside.
  3. 3
    Identify adjustment screws
Before removing the retaining ring, identify the two headlight adjustment screws. The vertical aim screw is located at the top of the headlight ring, and the horizontal aim screw is at the side. Do not turn these screws unless re-aiming the headlight. If you wish to preserve existing aim, mark their position with tape or note the number of visible threads.
  4. 4
    Remove headlight retaining ring screws
Locate the screws that secure the headlight retaining ring (typically 3, but verify against the specific 1966 Corvette assembly). These are shorter than the bezel screws and are positioned around the sealed beam unit, distinct from the two longer adjustment screws. Remove these 3 screws completely.
  5. 5
    Remove retaining ring
Carefully remove the headlight retaining ring from the assembly. The ring may be tight due to age and corrosion. Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry if necessary, being careful not to damage the mounting tabs.
  6. 6
    Remove sealed beam unit
Pull the sealed beam headlight unit forward out of the headlight bucket. The unit will still be connected by the wiring harness at the rear. Support the unit with one hand while accessing the connector.
  7. 7
    Disconnect wiring harness
Locate the 3-prong connector at the rear of the sealed beam unit. Grasp the connector housing firmly and pull straight back to disconnect. Do not pull on the wires themselves. Remove the old sealed beam unit completely.
  8. 8
    Inspect headlight bucket and wiring
Clean any dirt, corrosion, or debris from the headlight bucket using a shop towel. Inspect the wiring connector for corrosion, melted terminals, or damage. Check that the ground wire connection inside the bucket is secure and free of corrosion.
  9. 9
    Install new sealed beam unit
Connect the 3-prong connector to the terminals on the back of the new sealed beam unit. Ensure the connector is fully seated and the terminals are properly aligned. The connector will only fit one way. Position the sealed beam unit into the headlight bucket with the number embossed on the lens facing up.
  10. 10
    Install retaining ring
Position the headlight retaining ring over the sealed beam unit, aligning the screw holes with the mounting tabs. Ensure the ring sits flush against the sealed beam flange. Install the 3 retaining ring screws and tighten in a crisscross pattern to secure the unit evenly. Do not overtighten as the sealed beam glass can crack.
  11. 11
    Reinstall chrome bezel
Position the chrome headlight bezel over the retaining ring and align the 4 mounting holes. Install the 4 bezel screws and tighten snugly. Ensure the bezel sits flush and even around its entire perimeter.
  12. 12
    Test headlight operation
Turn the ignition to the ON position and activate the headlight switch through all positions: parking lights, headlights low beam, and headlights high beam. Verify the new sealed beam illuminates properly in both high and low beam modes. Verify the headlight door opens when the headlight switch is turned ON and closes when turned OFF.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all bezel screws are tight and the chrome bezel is properly seated
  2. Verify headlight door operation returns to normal with vacuum system or manual override
  3. Close and secure hood

Verification

  • Confirm headlight illuminates in both high and low beam modes
  • Check that headlight beam pattern appears correct and aimed properly
  • Verify all trim and bezels are secure with no rattles
  • Verify headlight door opens and closes properly
  • If headlight aim was disturbed, perform proper headlight aiming procedure using a headlight aiming tool or against a wall at 25 feet
