Replacement of both headlight bulbs on a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette C2, requiring removal of the headlight bezels and retaining rings to access the sealed beam units.

Warnings

Allow headlights to cool completely before attempting removal to avoid burns from hot glass and reflector assemblies.
ℹ️1966 Corvette uses 7-inch sealed beam units, not replaceable bulbs. The entire lamp assembly must be replaced.

Tools required

Phillips screwdriverEssential
Flathead screwdriver
Clean cloth or gloves

Parts

  • 7-inch sealed beam headlight unit × 2 — Wagner 6014 or equivalent 7-inch sealed beam

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and turn off headlights
  2. Allow headlight assemblies to cool for at least 10 minutes if recently used
  3. Open hood and prop securely

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove driver side headlight bezel
With the headlight buckets rotated to the open (up) position, locate the headlight retaining components. Remove the screws securing the chrome bezel/trim ring around the driver side headlight, then set the bezel and screws aside in a safe location. (Verify exact screw count against the 1966 Corvette service manual.)
  2. 2
Remove driver side headlight retaining ring
Remove the retaining ring screws holding the sealed beam unit in place. Do not disturb the headlight aim adjustment screws (typically located at the side and bottom of the ring), as these set the headlight aim. (Verify exact retaining ring screw count and adjustment screw locations against the 1966 Corvette service manual.)
  3. 3
    Disconnect driver side electrical connector
Pull the sealed beam unit forward slightly to access the rear connector. Grasp the connector firmly and pull straight back to disconnect it from the three prongs on the back of the sealed beam unit. Do not pull on the wires themselves.
  4. 4
Remove driver side sealed beam unit
Remove the old sealed beam headlight unit from the headlight bucket. Inspect the bucket for corrosion or debris and clean if necessary.
  5. 5
Install new driver side sealed beam unit
Connect the electrical connector to the three prongs on the back of the new sealed beam unit. Ensure the connector is fully seated. Position the sealed beam unit in the headlight bucket with the word 'TOP' molded into the lens facing up and the locating tabs/notches aligned for proper orientation.
  6. 6
    Reinstall driver side retaining ring
Position the headlight retaining ring over the sealed beam unit and install the 3 Phillips head screws. Tighten screws evenly in a star pattern to secure the unit without over-tightening. Ensure the sealed beam unit is seated properly against the bucket.
  7. 7
    Reinstall driver side bezel
Position the chrome headlight bezel over the assembly and install the 5 Phillips head screws. Tighten evenly to ensure even bezel seating and proper appearance.
  8. 8
    Repeat for passenger side headlight
Repeat steps 1 through 7 for the passenger side headlight assembly, removing the bezel, retaining ring, disconnecting the electrical connector, and installing the new sealed beam unit.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all bezel screws are tight and bezels are flush with body
  2. Ensure no tools or parts are left in engine compartment
  3. Close hood securely

Verification

  • Turn on headlights and verify both low beams illuminate properly
  • Switch to high beams and verify both high beams illuminate properly
  • Inspect for proper bezel alignment and gaps
  • Check headlight aim and adjust if necessary using the aim adjustment screws
