Preparation
- Ensure engine is in good mechanical condition with no misfires or vacuum leaks
- Verify distributor hold-down bolt is tight enough to prevent movement but loose enough to allow adjustment
- Clean the timing tab and harmonic balancer with a rag to make timing marks visible
- Locate the timing marks on the harmonic balancer and timing tab mounted to the timing cover
- Mark the appropriate timing specification mark on the timing tab with white paint for visibility (typically 4° BTDC for 327 with manual transmission, 8° BTDC for automatic)
Procedure
- 1Verify Initial ConditionsEnsure the engine is at normal operating temperature (170-195°F). Verify that all vacuum advance hoses are connected to the distributor vacuum advance canister. Confirm the air cleaner is installed and all accessories are in their normal operating condition.
- 2Disconnect and Plug Vacuum AdvanceLocate the vacuum advance hose connected to the distributor vacuum advance canister on the passenger side of the distributor body. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the distributor and plug the hose end with a golf tee or vacuum cap to prevent vacuum leaks during adjustment.
- 3Set Engine to Specified RPMStart the engine and allow it to idle. Adjust the idle speed screw on the carburetor to set the engine speed to the specified base timing RPM (typically 600-700 RPM for this application). Use a tachometer if available for accuracy.
- 4Connect Timing LightConnect the timing light power leads to the battery (red to positive, black to negative). Attach the inductive pickup clamp to the number 1 spark plug wire. On the 327 V8, the number 1 cylinder is the front cylinder on the driver side. Ensure the pickup clamp is secure and at least 2 inches from the spark plug boot.
- 5Check Current TimingAim the timing light at the timing tab on the front timing cover while the engine is running at base idle. The light will illuminate the timing marks on the harmonic balancer. Note where the timing mark on the balancer aligns with the degree marks on the timing tab. The 0° mark represents TDC (Top Dead Center).
- 6Loosen Distributor Hold-DownUsing a 9/16" wrench or distributor wrench, loosen the distributor hold-down bolt located at the base of the distributor where it meets the intake manifold. Loosen only enough to allow the distributor body to rotate with moderate hand pressure. Do not remove the bolt completely.
- 7Adjust TimingWhile aiming the timing light at the timing marks, carefully rotate the distributor body. Rotating the distributor counterclockwise advances timing; rotating clockwise retards timing. Adjust until the timing mark on the harmonic balancer aligns with the specified timing mark on the tab (verify the exact factory initial timing spec for your specific 327 horsepower variant from the GM shop manual before adjusting).
- 8Tighten Distributor Hold-DownWhile holding the distributor firmly in position to prevent movement, tighten the distributor hold-down bolt securely with the 9/16" wrench. Do not overtighten as this can crack the distributor base.
- 9Verify Final TimingWith the distributor hold-down bolt tightened, recheck the timing marks with the timing light to confirm the timing has not shifted during tightening. The timing mark should still align with the specified degree mark. If timing has shifted, repeat steps 6 through 8.
- 10Reconnect Vacuum AdvanceReconnect the vacuum advance hose to the distributor vacuum advance canister. The engine RPM may increase slightly and timing will advance under vacuum. This is normal operation.
- 11Reset Idle SpeedWith the vacuum advance reconnected, readjust the idle speed screw on the carburetor to achieve the specified curb idle speed (typically 700-800 RPM). Disconnect the timing light from the battery and spark plug wire.
