Replace or adjust the automatic transmission kickdown cable that controls downshift behavior and wide-open throttle engagement on the Powerglide or Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission.

Warnings

Do not operate transmission without properly adjusted kickdown cable as it can cause delayed shifts and transmission damage.
Engine must be cold or warm (not hot) to safely work near exhaust manifolds when routing cable.

Parts

  • Kickdown cable (transmission detent cable) × 1 — Use OEM specification for Powerglide or TH400
  • Cable mounting clip (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and set parking brake
  2. Chock rear wheels
  3. Allow engine to cool if recently operated
  4. Remove air cleaner assembly for access to carburetor linkage
  5. Inspect existing cable routing and note position before removal

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect cable from carburetor linkage
Locate the kickdown cable attachment point on the carburetor throttle lever. The cable terminates in a small ball or barrel end that fits into a slot on the lever. Using pliers, compress the cable housing retainer clip at the carburetor bracket and slide the cable housing out of the bracket. Then unhook the cable end from the throttle lever slot by rotating it and pulling free.
  2. 2
    Remove firewall cable grommet
Trace the kickdown cable from the carburetor back to where it passes through the firewall. From the engine bay side, locate the rubber grommet surrounding the cable where it enters the firewall. Using a flathead screwdriver, carefully pry the grommet out of the firewall opening. Pull the cable and grommet through toward the engine bay side, leaving enough slack to work with below.
  3. 3
    Access transmission from below
If working from below, raise the front of the vehicle with a floor jack and support securely on jack stands. Ensure adequate clearance to access the driver's side of the transmission near the bell housing. Alternatively, this can be done from above by working through the driver's side floor pan access area if equipped.
  4. 4
    Locate transmission cable attachment
On the driver's side of the Powerglide transmission, locate the throttle valve (TV) linkage lever on the transmission case. On the Powerglide this is actuated by an external throttle valve rod connected to the carburetor linkage, with downshift assisted by an electric kickdown switch at the carburetor. Identify the actual linkage type before disconnecting.
  5. 5
    Disconnect cable from transmission lever
Using a 1/2" wrench, loosen the cable retaining nut on the transmission lever stud. Slide the cable end off the threaded stud. If the cable is secured with a clip instead of a threaded connection, use pliers to compress the retaining clip and slide the cable end free from the lever pin.
  6. 6
    Remove cable from mounting clips
Trace the cable along its routing path from transmission to firewall. Remove the cable from any intermediate mounting clips along the frame, crossmember, or transmission mount. There are typically 2 mounting clips securing the cable along this route. Use pliers to open spring clips or remove any retaining hardware as needed.
  7. 7
    Extract old cable completely
Pull the old kickdown cable through the firewall opening from the transmission side, routing it carefully around any obstructions. Inspect the old cable routing path for clearance from exhaust components, steering linkage, and sharp edges. Note this routing for new cable installation.
  8. 8
    Prepare and route new cable
Insert the transmission end of the new kickdown cable through the firewall opening from the engine bay side, feeding it through to the transmission area. Route the cable following the original path, maintaining at least 2 inches clearance from exhaust manifolds and pipes. Ensure the cable does not contact the steering shaft or any moving suspension components.
  9. 9
    Install firewall grommet
Position the rubber grommet over the cable at the firewall penetration point. Press the grommet firmly into the firewall opening from the engine bay side, ensuring it seats completely around the perimeter. The grommet should seal the opening and prevent water or fumes from entering the passenger compartment.
  10. 10
    Attach cable to transmission lever
From below or through the access area, slide the cable end onto the transmission kickdown lever stud. Install the retaining clip or thread the retaining nut onto the stud finger-tight. Do not fully tighten yet, as adjustment will be required.
  11. 11
    Secure cable in mounting clips
Install the cable into the 2 intermediate mounting clips along the frame or transmission mount. Ensure the cable follows a smooth path without sharp bends. The cable should have slight slack but not be loose enough to hang down or contact moving parts.
  12. 12
    Connect cable to carburetor bracket
At the carburetor, insert the cable housing into the mounting bracket until the retainer clip snaps into place. Pull back gently on the cable housing to verify it is locked in the bracket. The housing should be secure with no vertical movement.
  13. 13
    Attach cable to throttle lever
Hook the cable end ball into the slot on the carburetor throttle lever. The cable should engage fully in the slot and move freely with throttle operation. Manually operate the throttle to verify the cable does not bind or stick.
  14. 14
    Adjust cable tension
With the throttle in the closed (idle) position, adjust the cable so there is approximately 1/16 inch of freeplay at the transmission lever. On the Powerglide, adjust the throttle valve (TV) linkage rod length per the factory service manual specification with the throttle in the closed (idle) position so the TV lever is correctly positioned. Tighten the cable retaining nut at the transmission with a 1/2" wrench while holding this position. Do not overtighten as this can distort the lever.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall air cleaner assembly
  2. Lower vehicle from jack stands if raised
  3. Remove wheel chocks

Verification

  • With engine running and transmission in Drive, verify that full throttle application causes an immediate downshift (kickdown)
  • Test drive vehicle and confirm transmission downshifts properly at wide-open throttle
  • Check for proper upshift points under light throttle (should shift at normal RPM, not prematurely)
  • Inspect cable routing from below to ensure no contact with exhaust or moving components
  • Verify cable has no binding when operating throttle from idle to wide-open position
