Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is completely cold to the touch
  2. Disconnect negative battery cable and secure away from battery post
  3. Drain engine coolant into appropriate container if interference with coolant passages is expected
  4. Remove air cleaner assembly and label all vacuum lines for reinstallation
  5. Photograph engine compartment and all hose/wire routing before disassembly
  6. Prepare clean workspace with organized parts trays labeled for each cylinder bank
  7. Have at least 50 clean shop rags available for cleaning and parts organization
  8. Verify replacement lifters match original equipment specifications (hydraulic flat-tappet for 1966 327)

    Remove valve covers
    Remove the 4 valve cover hold-down bolts from each valve cover. Carefully pry valve covers loose using a gasket scraper or pry bar at the designated pry points (avoid damaging mating surfaces). Remove valve covers and set aside. Inspect valve train for obvious damage, sludge buildup, or unusual wear patterns before proceeding.

    Mark the distributor body position relative to the intake manifold with a scribe or paint pen. Note the rotor position pointing to cylinder #1 (front driver side). Remove distributor hold-down clamp bolt and carefully pull distributor straight up and out of the engine. This prevents timing issues during reassembly and provides clearance for intake manifold removal.

    Disconnect throttle linkage, fuel line (use two wrenches to avoid twisting the line), PCV valve, distributor vacuum advance line, and all remaining vacuum lines from the intake manifold and carburetor. On 1966 models, disconnect temperature sender wire and any other electrical connections attached to the intake.

Remove all 16 pushrods and place them in a rack or labeled tray maintaining their original positions. Inspect each pushrod by rolling on a flat surface to check for bending. Measure pushrod length and check wear at both ends. Any bent or worn pushrods indicate deeper problems and must be replaced.

    Remove lifter guide and valley cover
    If equipped with a lifter guide plate, remove the mounting bolts and lift out the guide. Remove the lifter valley cover (oil splash shield) by removing the mounting bolts. This exposes the lifter bores in the engine block. Thoroughly clean the lifter valley area of all oil and debris before proceeding.

    Using a lifter puller tool or strong magnet, carefully extract each of the 16 lifters from their bores. If lifters are stuck due to varnish buildup, gently work them loose with the puller tool while rotating. Place each lifter in a labeled tray corresponding to its original bore position (passenger bank: cylinders 2-4-6-8 front to rear, driver bank: cylinders 1-3-5-7 front to rear). Do NOT mix lifter positions if reusing any lifters. Inspect each lifter bore for scoring, excessive wear, or damage.

    Inspect lifter bores and camshaft
    Clean each lifter bore thoroughly with brake cleaner and a lint-free cloth. Inspect bores for scoring, out-of-round wear, or damage. Using a flashlight, inspect visible camshaft lobes through the lifter bores for pitting, scoring, or abnormal wear patterns. If camshaft shows damage, it must be replaced and this procedure must be expanded to include camshaft replacement. Measure lifter bore diameter if micrometers are available; standard specification is 0.8427 to 0.8432 inches.

    Clean and inspect old lifters
    If reusing any original lifters (not recommended unless mileage is low and lifters show no wear), disassemble and clean each lifter thoroughly in solvent. Inspect lifter body for scoring on the sides. Inspect the lifter face (cam contact surface) for pitting, grooves, or concave wear. Any lifter showing face wear, scoring, or damage must be replaced. Check that each lifter plunger moves freely with light spring resistance. Stuck or sluggish lifters must be replaced.

    Remove all new lifters from packaging. Prime each hydraulic lifter by submerging in clean engine oil and working the plunger up and down 20-30 times until no air bubbles emerge. This pre-fills the internal hydraulic chamber and prevents valve train noise on initial startup. Coat the entire outer surface of each lifter body with assembly lube, paying special attention to the cam contact face. Apply a heavy coating of assembly lube.

Push lifters down by hand until they seat on the camshaft lobe. Rotate the engine by hand periodically (using crankshaft bolt) to position camshaft lobes as needed for lifter installation. Verify each lifter moves freely in its bore with no binding. Wipe away any excess assembly lube from lifter valley.

    Install valley cover and lifter guides
    Install new lifter valley cover gasket if required. Position lifter valley cover over the lifter valley and install mounting bolts. If equipped with pushrod guide plates, install them now with new gaskets. Ensure all passages are clean and free of debris before covering.

    Coat each pushrod end with assembly lube. Install each pushrod into its original position, guiding it through the cylinder head and ensuring the lower end seats properly in the lifter cup. The pushrod should drop down and seat with a distinct feel. Rotate each pushrod with your fingers to verify it spins freely and is properly seated in both the lifter and rocker arm cup. Do NOT install bent pushrods.

    Install rocker arms and adjust preload
    Install rocker arms over the studs and onto the pushrod ends. Rotate the engine until the lifter for the cylinder being adjusted is on the base circle of the camshaft (both valves closed, pushrod loose). Thread the rocker arm nut down until all lash is removed and the pushrod cannot be spun easily by hand. This is zero-lash position. From zero-lash, tighten the adjusting nut an additional 1/2 to 1 full turn to set hydraulic lifter preload. Repeat for all 16 rocker arms, working with the camshaft rotation to position each lifter on its base circle during adjustment. This preload setting compresses the lifter plunger slightly into its operating range.

    Prepare intake manifold surfaces
    Thoroughly clean all gasket surfaces on the intake manifold, cylinder heads, and engine block front/rear rails. Use a gasket scraper and solvent to remove all old gasket material and RTV. Clean bolt holes with a thread chaser or compressed air. Ensure mating surfaces are completely clean, dry, and free of oil.

    Install intake manifold gaskets
    Apply a thin bead of RTV silicone to the front and rear engine block rails where the intake manifold end seals will sit. Position the new intake manifold end seals in place. Install new intake manifold gaskets onto the cylinder heads, ensuring all port openings align correctly. Some installers use a small dab of grease to hold gaskets in position. Do not use RTV on the gasket-to-head surfaces. Position the intake manifold carefully over the gaskets and lower into place, ensuring gaskets do not shift out of position.

    Install intake manifold bolts
    Install all 12 intake manifold bolts finger-tight. Tighten bolts in three stages using the proper tightening sequence (start at center bolts and work outward in a spiral pattern). First pass: snug all bolts to 10 ft-lbs. Second pass: tighten to 20 ft-lbs. Final pass: tighten to 30 ft-lbs. Allow manifold to sit for 20 minutes, then re-torque all bolts to 30 ft-lbs to compensate for gasket compression.

    Reinstall distributor and carburetor
    Align the distributor housing with the scribe marks made during removal. Insert distributor into the engine, aligning the rotor with the marked position for cylinder #1. Install distributor hold-down clamp and snug bolt (do not fully tighten yet for timing adjustment). Reinstall carburetor with new gasket, reconnect fuel line, throttle linkage, and all vacuum lines per earlier labels and photographs.

Apply a small dab of RTV at the intake manifold-to-cylinder head corners to seal the gasket junction. Install new grommets in valve cover bolt holes. Position valve covers carefully onto the heads and install the 4 hold-down bolts for each cover. Tighten valve cover bolts in a cross pattern to 4-5 ft-lbs (hand-tight plus slight torque wrench snug; over-tightening will crush cork gaskets and cause leaks).

    Add ZDDP break-in additive to engine according to product instructions. Fill engine with fresh 5W-30 conventional oil to proper level (5 quarts total capacity). Reconnect battery negative cable. Set initial timing approximately to specification (typically 4-8 degrees BTDC for 1966 327). Prime the oiling system by removing the coil wire and cranking the engine for 10-15 seconds without starting. Check for oil pressure on the gauge. Once oil pressure is confirmed, reconnect coil wire and start the engine. Immediately bring engine to 2000-2500 RPM and maintain this speed for 20-30 minutes to break in the new lifter faces against the camshaft. Monitor for oil leaks, unusual noises, and overheating. Do NOT allow engine to idle during break-in period.
