This procedure covers the removal and installation of door-mounted speakers in a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette, including removal of door panels and speaker mounting hardware.

Warnings

1966 Corvettes use fiberglass body panels that can crack if excessive force is applied during door panel removal.
ℹ️Original 1966 Corvettes did not come with factory door speakers. This procedure assumes aftermarket speakers have been installed or will be installed in existing door panel cutouts.
Disconnect battery negative terminal before working with any electrical components to prevent short circuits.

Parts

  • Replacement door speaker × 1 — Typically 4" or 5" diameter, check door panel cutout
  • Speaker wire connectors (if needed) × 2 — Use OEM specification
  • Door panel clips (replacement) × 4 — GM door panel clip set

Preparation

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts
  2. Open the door fully and support it in the open position
  3. Lay a clean towel or blanket on the ground to protect the door panel once removed
  4. If working on driver's side, ensure steering wheel is in position that allows full door opening

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove window crank handle
Locate the horseshoe-style spring retaining clip behind the window crank handle. Press the door panel inward to expose the clip, then use a forked window-crank removal tool (or push the clip off with a hooked tool) to disengage it from the splined shaft. Pull the window crank handle straight off the regulator shaft. Set aside the handle and clip for reinstallation.
  2. 2
    Remove interior door handle bezel
Locate the screw on the interior door handle escutcheon (decorative trim plate). Remove this screw with a Phillips screwdriver. Carefully pull the escutcheon away from the door panel to expose the door handle mounting area.
  3. 3
    Remove door panel mounting screws
Remove the Phillips screws securing the door panel to the door frame. There are typically 3 screws along the bottom edge of the door panel and 1 screw near the armrest area. Keep these screws organized for reinstallation.
  4. 4
    Release door panel clips
Starting at the bottom rear corner of the door panel, carefully insert a flat blade screwdriver or panel removal tool between the door panel and the metal door frame. Gently pry outward to release the metal spring clips that secure the panel. Work your way around the perimeter of the panel, releasing each clip. The panel is retained by spring clips around its perimeter; verify the exact clip count and locations against a 1966 Corvette factory service/assembly manual before removal.
  5. 5
    Remove door panel
Once all clips are released, lift the door panel upward and away from the door frame. The panel hooks over the top edge of the door, so lift it up approximately 1 inch before pulling it away. Be careful not to snag any wiring connections behind the panel.
  6. 6
    Disconnect speaker wiring
With the door panel partially removed, locate the speaker wire connections behind the panel. If factory connectors are present, disconnect them by hand. If wires are spliced together, carefully cut the wires leaving enough length on both sides for reconnection. Note the polarity marking on the speaker terminals (positive and negative).
  7. 7
    Remove existing speaker
Locate the screws (typically 3 or 4, depending on the aftermarket speaker installed) securing the speaker to the door panel or speaker mounting bracket. Remove these screws using a Phillips screwdriver. Carefully lift the speaker away from the mounting location. Note the orientation of the speaker for proper reinstallation of the replacement.
  8. 8
    Install replacement speaker
Position the new speaker in the mounting location, ensuring the wiring terminals are accessible and the speaker cone faces toward the interior. Align the mounting holes and install the mounting screws (use the same number and locations as removed in the prior step). Tighten the screws in a cross pattern to ensure even pressure, but do not overtighten as this can crack the speaker frame or mounting surface.
  9. 9
    Connect speaker wiring
Connect the speaker wires to the new speaker terminals, ensuring correct polarity (positive to positive, negative to negative). If using crimp connectors, strip approximately 1/4 inch of insulation from each wire end, insert into the connector, and crimp securely. If using factory connectors, push them firmly onto the speaker terminals until they click into place.
  10. 10
    Test speaker function
Before reinstalling the door panel, reconnect the battery negative terminal temporarily. Turn on the vehicle ignition and radio to test the speaker. Verify that sound is produced and that there are no rattles or distortion. If speaker does not function, verify wiring polarity and connections. Disconnect battery negative terminal again before proceeding.
  11. 11
    Reinstall door panel
Position the door panel so that the top edge hooks over the window frame opening. Lower the panel into place and align it with the door frame. Press firmly around the perimeter to engage all spring clips. You should hear each clip snap into place.
  12. 12
    Install door panel screws
Install all door panel mounting screws in their original locations and tighten securely with a Phillips screwdriver. Do not overtighten as this can crack or strip the hardboard/Masonite-backed door panel.
  13. 13
Install door handle bezel and window crank
Reinstall the interior door handle escutcheon and secure with its mounting screw. Slide the window crank handle onto the regulator shaft, ensuring the retaining clip groove on the shaft is accessible. Install the metal retaining clip by pressing it into the groove between the handle and door panel using needle-nose pliers.

Reassembly

  1. Reconnect the battery negative terminal
  2. Operate the window crank to ensure it functions properly and was reinstalled correctly
  3. Check that all door panel clips are fully seated and the panel is secure
  4. Inspect door panel gaps around the perimeter to ensure even fitment

Verification

  • Turn on the vehicle ignition and radio system
  • Test the speaker at various volume levels to confirm proper operation
  • Check for rattles or vibrations from the door panel at different volumes
  • Verify that all door panel trim pieces are secure and properly aligned
  • Confirm window crank operates smoothly without interference from the door panel
