Preparation

    Mark and remove driveshaft
    Using a paint pen or marker, mark the relationship between the driveshaft yoke and the differential pinion flange for proper alignment during reassembly.     Remove transmission mount and crossmember
    Support the transmission with a transmission jack or a floor jack with a wood block. Remove the 2 bolts securing the transmission mount to the crossmember. Remove the 4 bolts securing the crossmember to the frame rails. Lower the transmission slightly and remove the crossmember from the vehicle. Lower the transmission further to provide working clearance for tailhousing removal.

    Remove transmission tailhousing
    Remove the 7 bolts securing the tailhousing to the transmission case. Note that bolt lengths may vary by position. Carefully tap the tailhousing with a rubber mallet to break the gasket seal if necessary. Slide the tailhousing straight rearward off the output shaft, supporting the output shaft bearing retainer as it clears. Remove and discard the old tailhousing gasket.

    Remove output shaft rear seal and speedometer drive gear
    Pry the output shaft seal from the tailhousing bore using a seal puller or flat blade screwdriver. If equipped, remove the snap ring retaining the speedometer drive gear on the output shaft. Slide the speedometer drive gear off the output shaft splines and set aside for reinstallation.

    Remove output shaft bearing retainer snap ring
    Locate the large snap ring securing the output shaft bearing retainer inside the tailhousing bore. Using internal snap ring pliers, compress and remove the snap ring. Set the snap ring aside in a clean location for reuse or replacement.

    Extract output shaft bearing assembly
    From the rear of the tailhousing, drive the bearing and retainer assembly forward and out through the front of the housing using a brass drift and hammer, or use a bearing puller from the front side. Work carefully to avoid damaging the tailhousing bore. If the bearing is seized, apply penetrating oil and allow time to soak. Once removed, separate the bearing from the retainer if necessary.

    Inspect components and clean housing
    Thoroughly inspect the output shaft for wear, scoring, discoloration, or damage in the bearing contact area. Check the splines for wear or damage. Measure the shaft diameter in the bearing journal area with a micrometer to verify it is within specification. Inspect the tailhousing bore for scoring, cracks, or damage. Clean all surfaces with solvent and a brush, ensuring all old gasket material is removed from mating surfaces. Blow dry with compressed air if available.

    Install new output shaft bearing
    Press or drive the new bearing onto the bearing retainer or into the tailhousing (depending on your transmission design) using an appropriate bearing installation tool or socket that contacts only the bearing race, never the rolling elements or cage. Ensure the bearing is fully seated and square. Install the bearing assembly into the tailhousing bore from the front, seating it completely.

    Install bearing retainer snap ring
    Install the snap ring into the groove in the tailhousing bore to secure the bearing retainer. Ensure the snap ring is fully seated in its groove around the entire circumference. Verify the bearing retainer cannot move axially.

    Install speedometer drive gear and output shaft seal
    Slide the speedometer drive gear onto the output shaft splines in the correct orientation, then install the retaining snap ring if equipped. Drive a new output shaft seal into the tailhousing bore using a seal driver or appropriate socket, ensuring it is square and seated to the proper depth with the lip facing inward.

    Install new tailhousing gasket and reinstall tailhousing
    Position a new tailhousing gasket onto the transmission case, aligning all bolt holes. Carefully guide the tailhousing over the output shaft and onto the transmission case, ensuring the gasket remains properly positioned. Install all 7 tailhousing bolts finger-tight, then tighten in a cross-pattern to secure evenly. Final tightening should be done with a torque wrench to the proper specification.

    Reinstall crossmember and transmission mount
    Raise the transmission with the jack to approximate alignment height. Position the crossmember between the frame rails and install the 4 frame mounting bolts finger-tight. Install the 2 transmission mount to crossmember bolts finger-tight. Tighten all 6 fasteners to specification in sequence: frame bolts first, then mount bolts. Remove the transmission jack.

    Reconnect speedometer cable and install driveshaft
    Insert the speedometer cable into the tailhousing fitting and tighten the retaining nut securely by hand. Lubricate the slip yoke splines lightly with transmission fluid. Align the marks made during disassembly and slide the driveshaft forward into the transmission output shaft. Align the rear U-joint with the differential pinion flange and install the 4 U-joint strap bolts, tightening to specification.

    Refill transmission and check for leaks
    Remove the transmission side cover or fill plug (depending on transmission type). Add approximately 2 to 2.5 quarts of GL-4 gear oil (SAE 80W-90 or per transmission specification) for the Muncie or Borg Warner 4-speed manual transmission. Check the fluid level according to the transmission's fill procedure. Reinstall the fill plug or side cover. Lower the vehicle from jack stands. Start the engine and allow it to idle, then check for leaks around the tailhousing gasket and output shaft seal.
