Preparation

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable
  2. Allow engine to cool completely (minimum 2 hours after running)
  3. Identify which valve spring requires replacement and note cylinder number
  4. Remove air cleaner assembly and set aside
  5. Label and disconnect any vacuum lines or wiring that will interfere with valve cover removal
  6. Prepare clean workspace with shop rags to catch any oil drips

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove valve cover
    Remove the 4 valve cover retaining bolts from the appropriate side (left or right bank). Lift valve cover off carefully and inspect gasket condition. Clean any oil residue from valve cover mating surface on cylinder head using gasket scraper and clean rags. Set valve cover aside with bolts in a safe location.

    Rotate engine to position piston
    Using a breaker bar on the crankshaft damper bolt, rotate the engine clockwise (viewed from front) until the piston for the affected cylinder reaches top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke. Both intake and exhaust valves for that cylinder should be fully closed with rocker arms at rest position. This is critical for air pressure retention in the next steps.

    Remove rocker arm for affected valve
    On this engine the rocker arms are stud-mounted with individual ball pivots. Remove the rocker arm nut completely from the stud that corresponds to the valve needing spring replacement, then lift off the rocker arm nut, rocker arm, and pivot ball. Keep all components organized for reinstallation.

    Remove spark plug and install air adapter
    Remove the spark plug from the cylinder corresponding to the affected valve. Thread the spark plug air hose adapter into the spark plug hole hand-tight. Connect compressed air line and set regulator to 90-100 PSI. Air pressure will hold the valve seated while keepers are removed.

    Compress valve spring
    Position the valve spring compressor tool over the valve spring retainer and valve stem. Ensure the tool is properly seated and centered on the retainer. Slowly compress the valve spring until the valve keepers (collets) are fully exposed and pressure is relieved from them. Maintain steady pressure on the compressor tool.
    Ensure air pressure is constant before proceeding; listen for any air leaks around valve seat that would indicate valve is not sealing properly.

    Remove valve keepers and retainer
    Using magnetic pickup tool or needle-nose pliers, carefully remove both valve keepers from the valve stem groove. Place them immediately in a small container to prevent loss. Slowly release the valve spring compressor tool and remove it. Lift off the valve spring retainer, valve spring, and valve stem seal (if present). Inspect all components for wear or damage.
    ⚠️Do not allow valve keepers to fall into engine; they can cause catastrophic damage if they enter the combustion chamber or oil passages.

    Inspect valve stem and guide
    With the spring removed, inspect the valve stem for wear, scoring, or damage. Check the valve stem seal seat area on the valve guide for damage. Verify air pressure is still holding the valve firmly seated. If valve stem seal requires replacement, carefully remove old seal using appropriate removal tool or pliers.

    Install new valve spring
    If valve stem seal was removed, install new seal by carefully pressing it onto the valve guide using a seal installation tool or deep socket. Ensure seal is fully seated. Place new valve spring over valve stem with the closer-wound coils (damper end) toward the cylinder head. Position valve spring retainer on top of spring, ensuring it is centered on the valve stem.

    Compress new spring and install keepers
    Using the valve spring compressor, compress the new valve spring until the valve keeper grooves on the valve stem are fully exposed. Apply a small amount of clean engine oil or assembly lube to the valve stem keeper groove. Carefully position both valve keepers into the stem groove using needle-nose pliers or magnetic tool, ensuring they seat fully and evenly in the groove.
    Valve keepers must be fully seated in the groove with no gaps; improper keeper installation will cause immediate valve failure when engine runs.

    Release spring compressor and verify keeper engagement
    Slowly release the valve spring compressor tool while watching the keepers to ensure they remain properly seated. Once the spring is fully decompressed, tap the valve stem tip lightly with a plastic or brass tool to ensure keepers are locked in place. Verify the valve spring retainer is centered and keepers are fully engaged before proceeding.

    Remove air pressure and spark plug adapter
    Turn off compressed air supply and disconnect air line. Remove the spark plug thread adapter from the cylinder. Reinstall the spark plug and torque to specification (typically 20-25 ft-lbs for gasketed/flat-seat plugs in cast-iron heads on this engine, but verify with factory specification).

    Reinstall rocker arm
    Reposition the rocker arm over the valve stem tip and pushrod. Install the pivot ball and rocker arm nut on the stud. Adjust valve lash according to factory specification: for hydraulic-lifter engines, with engine cold, tighten to zero lash then 3/4 to 1 full turn past zero; for solid/mechanical-lifter variants, set lash to the specified feeler-gauge clearance with the lifter on the base circle of the cam. Verify which lifter type your engine uses before adjusting. Rotate engine through two complete revolutions and recheck adjustment.

    Reinstall valve cover
    Position new valve cover gasket on cylinder head. Carefully lower valve cover into place, ensuring gasket remains properly aligned. Install all valve cover bolts and tighten in a crisscross pattern to 45-60 inch-lbs (approximately 4-5 ft-lbs). Do not overtighten or gasket will be crushed and leak.

Reassembly

  1. Reconnect any vacuum lines or wiring that was disconnected during disassembly
  2. Reinstall air cleaner assembly
  3. Reconnect negative battery cable
  4. Add engine oil if any was lost during the procedure

Verification

  • Start engine and allow to idle; listen for any unusual valve train noise from the repaired cylinder
  • Check for oil leaks around valve cover gasket after engine reaches operating temperature
  • Verify smooth engine operation with no misfires or rough running
  • After 15-20 minutes of operation, shut off engine and recheck valve cover bolt torque when cool
