Warnings

⚠️Valve springs are under extreme tension. Improper use of spring compressor can cause springs to launch with lethal force. Always wear safety glasses and keep face clear of compressor.

Preparation

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove valve covers
    Disconnect spark plug wires from both valve covers and secure them out of the way. Remove the valve cover bolts (7 bolts per cover on 327 V8) using appropriate socket. Carefully lift valve covers off cylinder heads. If covers are stuck, gently tap with rubber mallet - do not pry against gasket surface. Clean gasket surfaces on both heads with gasket scraper, removing all old gasket material.

Carefully lift intake manifold straight up off engine, tilting front upward first. Be prepared for residual coolant drainage from manifold ports.

    Using marker or paint pen, number each rocker arm and pushrod location (1-16, front to rear, alternating intake/exhaust). This ensures components return to their original positions, maintaining wear patterns. Photograph rocker arm assembly from multiple angles for reference.

    Remove rocker arms and pushrods
    Loosen each rocker arm stud nut using 9/16" wrench while holding pushrod to prevent rotation. Remove rocker arm nuts completely, then lift off rocker arms and pivot balls. Keep hardware organized by cylinder position. Remove all 16 pushrods by lifting straight up from lifter valley. Store pushrods in order in a holder or marked cardboard template. Inspect pushrod ends for wear or scoring - replace if damaged.

    Rotate crankshaft using breaker bar on harmonic balancer bolt until cylinder 1 is at top dead center on compression stroke (both valves closed - verify by attempting to move rocker arms, they should have freeplay). Remove cylinder 1 spark plug. Thread compressed air adapter into spark plug hole and apply 90-100 PSI shop air. Listen for air leakage around valves - this confirms valves are seating and will be held in place. If excessive air leakage occurs from adjacent cylinders or oil filler, piston rings are worn, but procedure can continue.

    Replace valve springs on cylinder 1
    With air pressure holding valves seated, position valve spring compressor tool over first valve spring. Compress spring until retainer releases tension on valve keepers (split collets). Using magnetic pickup tool, carefully remove both valve keepers and place in labeled container. Slowly release spring compressor and remove tool. Remove valve spring retainer, valve spring, and valve stem seal. Inspect valve stem for scoring or damage. Install new valve stem seal over valve guide, tapping gently into place with appropriate driver or deep socket. Install new valve spring with tightly-wound coils toward cylinder head. Place new retainer on valve stem. Compress new spring with compressor tool until retainer grooves are accessible. Install valve keepers into valve stem grooves using magnetic tool or small dab of grease to hold in place. Carefully release compressor while ensuring keepers remain seated. Tap valve stem tip gently with plastic/brass punch to fully seat keepers. Repeat process for second valve on cylinder 1.

    Replace valve springs on remaining cylinders
    Move to next cylinder in firing order sequence. Rotate crankshaft to position that cylinder at TDC compression stroke (both valves closed). Remove spark plug, install air adapter, and pressurize cylinder. Replace both valve springs using same procedure as cylinder 1. Continue this process for all 8 cylinders (16 valves total). Maintain air pressure at all times when keepers are removed. Work methodically and do not rush - dropped valve requires head removal.

    Verify valve spring installation
    After all springs are replaced, remove air pressure and adapters. Visually inspect each valve spring retainer to confirm keepers are fully seated in valve stem grooves. Using feeler gauge, check installed spring height if specifications are available (measure from spring seat to bottom of retainer). All springs should be uniform height. Attempt to rotate each retainer by hand - it should not turn if keepers are properly seated.

    Reinstall pushrods and rocker arms
    Apply engine assembly lube or fresh engine oil to both ends of each pushrod. Install pushrods in their original positions by lowering into lifter valley until they seat in lifter cups. Rotate each pushrod to verify it's seated properly - you should feel it drop slightly and spin freely. Install rocker arms with pivot balls onto rocker studs in original positions. Thread rocker arm nuts onto studs finger-tight only at this stage.

    Adjust valve lash
    Rotate crankshaft to position cylinder 1 at TDC compression stroke (both valves closed). Using firing order and valve arrangement, adjust valves using the following method: Tighten rocker arm nut while rotating pushrod with fingers until you feel resistance (zero lash point), then tighten nut an additional 1 full turn for hydraulic lifters on 1966 327 V8. This provides proper lifter preload. Adjust remaining valves by rotating engine and following valve adjustment sequence. After all valves are adjusted, recheck first few adjustments to ensure they haven't loosened.

    Prepare and install intake manifold gaskets
    Thoroughly clean intake manifold mating surfaces on cylinder heads and engine block. Remove all old gasket material and RTV residue. Apply thin bead of RTV silicone to front and rear engine block end rails where intake manifold seals install. Position new end seals onto engine block, ensuring they fit into side gasket tabs. Place new intake manifold gaskets onto cylinder heads, aligning all port openings. Apply small dab of RTV at four corners where end seals meet side gaskets to prevent leakage.

    Carefully lower intake manifold onto engine, ensuring gaskets remain in position. Start all 12 intake manifold bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading. Tighten intake manifold bolts in proper sequence (center bolts first, working outward in crisscross pattern) to proper specification in three stages: first pass to 10 ft-lbs, second pass to 20 ft-lbs, final pass to final specification. Allow RTV to cure for 15 minutes before proceeding. Reinstall distributor in original position (rotor pointing to cylinder 1 terminal position at TDC). Install and secure distributor hold-down clamp.

    Reinstall remaining components
    Reinstall carburetor onto intake manifold using new gasket if needed. Reconnect fuel line, throttle linkage, vacuum lines, PCV hose, and all electrical connections using photos and labels as reference. Verify all connections are secure. Install new valve cover gaskets onto valve covers. Position valve covers onto cylinder heads and install all 14 valve cover bolts (7 per side). Install new oil filter and refill crankcase with 5 quarts of 5W-30 conventional engine oil. Reconnect negative battery cable. Prime fuel system by cranking engine for 5-second bursts (3-4 times) without starting to build oil pressure. Start engine and immediately check for oil pressure indication. Listen for valve train noise and any unusual sounds. Allow engine to reach operating temperature while monitoring for coolant or oil leaks around intake manifold and valve covers.
