Removal and replacement of the windshield wiper linkage assembly on a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette, including access through the cowl plenum and disconnection of the wiper motor.
Warnings
⚠The wiper linkage pivots may be seized due to age and corrosion. Apply penetrating oil and allow time to soak before attempting removal to avoid breaking mounting studs.
⚠The cowl area may contain debris, leaves, and standing water. Protect the interior and electrical components during disassembly.
ℹ️Mark the orientation of all linkage components during disassembly to ensure correct reassembly and wiper park position.

Parts
- Wiper linkage assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification or reproduction Corvette wiper linkage
- Wiper motor to linkage bushing × 1 — Plastic pivot bushing
- Cowl plenum seal × 1 — Rubber cowl seal if damaged
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake.
- Turn ignition off and remove key.
- Disconnect negative battery cable to prevent accidental wiper motor activation.
- Remove both wiper arms by lifting the spring-loaded retaining tab at the base and pulling the arm off the splined drive shaft.
- Place protective covering over fenders to prevent damage during cowl work.
Procedure
- 1Remove cowl vent grilleRemove the cowl vent grille screen by removing the screws securing it to the cowl plenum (verify exact count and head type against factory documentation). The screws are located along the rear edge of the grille. Carefully lift the grille assembly away from the cowl, taking care not to bend or damage the screen mesh. Set aside with hardware.
- 2Access wiper motor and linkageWith the cowl grille removed, you now have access to the wiper motor and linkage assembly. Clean any debris, leaves, or standing water from the cowl plenum area using shop towels. Inspect the rubber cowl seal for deterioration and replace if cracked or missing.
- 3Disconnect wiper motor electrical connectorLocate the wiper motor electrical connections in the cowl area. Disconnect the wiper motor wiring (note that mid-1960s Corvettes use individual spade/bullet terminals rather than a modern keyed connector). Label or note the wire positions and orientation for correct reassembly.
- 4Disconnect wiper motor from linkageLocate the crank arm connection between the wiper motor output shaft and the linkage drive arm. Remove the retaining clip (either a C-clip or snap ring) securing the pivot connection using needle-nose pliers. Once the clip is removed, separate the motor crank arm from the linkage ball socket. Inspect the plastic bushing at this connection point and replace if worn or cracked.
- 5Remove wiper motor mounting boltsRemove the bolts securing the wiper motor to its mounting location (verify exact count and bolt size against factory documentation). Support the motor as you remove the final bolt, then carefully maneuver the motor assembly out of the cowl area. Support the motor as you remove the final bolt, then carefully maneuver the motor assembly out of the cowl area. Set aside if not being replaced.
- 6Remove wiper pivot assemblies from cowlFrom inside the cowl area, locate the driver and passenger side wiper pivot assemblies. Each pivot is secured by a nut on the underside of the cowl panel. Access these nuts from below the dashboard if necessary. Remove the pivot retaining nuts using the appropriate size wrench or deep socket (verify size against factory specification). If pivots are seized, apply penetrating oil and allow to soak for 15 minutes before attempting removal.
- 7Remove linkage assemblyWith both pivot nuts removed, carefully maneuver the complete wiper linkage assembly up and out through the cowl opening. The assembly must be rotated and tilted to clear the cowl structure. Take note of the routing and orientation of the linkage arms for proper installation of the replacement assembly.
- 8Inspect and prepare new linkageCompare the old linkage assembly to the new replacement to verify correct configuration. Inspect all pivot points and ball sockets on the new linkage. Apply white lithium grease to all pivot points, ball sockets, and bushings on the new linkage assembly to ensure smooth operation and prevent premature wear.
- 9Install new linkage assemblyManeuver the new wiper linkage assembly down into the cowl area, orienting it the same way as the original. Insert both wiper pivot shafts through their respective holes in the cowl panel. Ensure the linkage arms have full freedom of movement and are not binding against any cowl structure.
- 10Secure wiper pivot assembliesInstall the pivot retaining nuts onto both driver and passenger side wiper pivot shafts from below the cowl panel. Tighten the nuts securely using a 1/2" wrench, but do not overtighten as this can bind the pivot mechanism. The pivots should rotate freely after tightening.
- 11Reinstall wiper motorPosition the wiper motor back into its mounting location on the firewall. Install the 3 mounting bolts and tighten using a 7/16" socket. Ensure the motor is seated properly against the firewall before final tightening.
- 12Connect motor to linkageAlign the wiper motor crank arm with the linkage drive arm ball socket. Install the new plastic bushing if replacing, then press the connection together. Secure with the retaining clip (C-clip or snap ring) using needle-nose pliers. Verify the connection is secure by attempting to pull the joint apart.
- 13Reconnect electrical and test operationReconnect the negative battery cable. Reconnect the wiper motor electrical connector, ensuring it clicks into place. Before reinstalling the cowl grille, turn the ignition to accessory position and test wiper operation at both speeds (low and high). Verify smooth movement with no binding, proper sweep pattern, and correct park position. Turn wipers off and verify they return to park position.
- 14Reinstall wiper arms and cowl grilleWith the linkage tested and operating correctly, reinstall the wiper arms onto the drive shafts in their correct positions (marked during removal or positioned according to factory park location). Press firmly until the spring-loaded retaining tab engages. Reinstall the cowl vent grille and secure with the 6 Phillips head screws. Test wiper operation one final time with arms installed to verify proper sweep pattern and blade position.
Reassembly
- Ensure all cowl mounting hardware is secure and properly torqued.
- Verify wiper arms are properly indexed on the splined shafts for correct sweep pattern.
- Apply fresh windshield washer fluid and test washer system operation if nozzles were disturbed during service.
- Clean any grease or debris from windshield and wiper blades before final testing.
Verification
- Turn ignition to accessory position and cycle wipers through all speeds, verifying smooth operation with no binding, clicking, or hesitation.
- Verify wipers return to correct park position when turned off, with blades fully below the hood line.
- Check for proper sweep pattern with both blades covering their designated areas of the windshield without interference.
- Inspect cowl area for any water leaks during first rainfall or car wash, verifying cowl seal is properly seated.
