This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the ABS pump/modulator assembly on a 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L V8 engine, including brake line disconnection, bleeding, and system verification.

Warnings

⚠️Brake fluid is corrosive to paint and can cause skin/eye irritation. Wear appropriate protection and clean spills immediately.
Do not allow brake fluid to contact any painted surfaces. Cover fenders and surrounding areas.
The ABS pump contains brake fluid under residual pressure. Have rags ready when disconnecting lines.
ℹ️This procedure requires a scan tool with ABS automated bleeding function to properly bleed the system.
ℹ️Never reuse brake fluid. Only use fresh DOT 4 fluid from a sealed container.

Parts

  • ABS pump/modulator assembly × 1 — ACDelco or GM OEM
  • Brake line sealing washers × 6 — Use OEM specification
  • Thread locker (medium strength) × 1 — Loctite 242 or equivalent

Fluids

  • ACDelco DOT 4 Brake Fluid — 1 qt

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. Open hood and locate brake fluid reservoir; check fluid level and condition
  4. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
  5. Raise front of vehicle and support securely on jack stands
  6. Remove both front wheels
  7. Place drain pan under ABS pump location (driver side frame rail near master cylinder)
  8. Have clean rags ready to cap brake lines immediately after disconnection

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access ABS pump assembly
Locate the ABS pump/modulator assembly mounted on the driver side frame rail below the master cylinder. Remove any plastic covers or shields blocking access to the unit. The pump is a rectangular aluminum block with 6 brake lines and an electrical connector attached.
  2. 2
    Disconnect electrical connector
Press the locking tab on the large electrical connector at the ABS pump and carefully pull the connector straight off. Do not pull on wires. Secure the connector away from the work area to prevent damage.
  3. 3
    Mark and disconnect brake lines
Using a marker or tape, label each of the 6 brake lines according to their position (front left, front right, rear left, rear right, and two from master cylinder). Using the appropriate line wrench, carefully loosen each brake line fitting at the ABS pump. Expect some fluid spillage. Immediately cap or plug each line after removal to prevent contamination and excessive fluid loss.

  4. 4
    Remove ABS pump mounting bolts
Locate the three mounting bolts securing the ABS pump to the frame bracket. Using a 13mm socket, remove all three mounting bolts. Support the pump assembly as you remove the final bolt to prevent it from falling.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts34 Nm (25 lb-ft)
  5. 5
    Remove ABS pump assembly
Carefully lower the ABS pump assembly from its mounting position. Be prepared for additional brake fluid to drain from the unit. Place the old pump in a drain pan. Inspect the mounting bracket for damage or corrosion; clean if necessary.
  6. 6
    Prepare new ABS pump
Remove the new ABS pump from packaging and verify part number matches. Inspect all port threads for damage. Install new sealing washers on each brake line fitting (do not reuse old washers). Compare new pump to old pump to confirm identical configuration.
  7. 7
    Install new ABS pump
Position the new ABS pump assembly onto the mounting bracket, aligning the mounting holes. Apply medium-strength thread locker to the mounting bolt threads. Install all three mounting bolts hand-tight first, then torque to specification in a cross pattern to ensure even seating.

  8. 8
    Reconnect brake lines
Thread each brake line fitting into the correct port on the new ABS pump by hand first to avoid cross-threading. Ensure new sealing washers are in place. Once all lines are hand-tight, use the line wrench to torque each fitting to specification. Do not overtighten as this can damage the aluminum pump body.

    Line Fittings26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connector
Inspect the electrical connector terminals for corrosion or damage. Align and firmly push the connector onto the ABS pump until you hear/feel the locking tab click into place. Tug gently to verify secure connection.
  10. 10
    Reinstall wheels and lower vehicle
Reinstall both front wheels and hand-tighten lug nuts. Lower vehicle to ground and torque lug nuts to specification in a star pattern. Remove jack stands.
    Torque spec
    Wheel Lug Nuts190 Nm (140 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Fill brake fluid reservoir
Reconnect negative battery cable. Open brake fluid reservoir and fill to MAX line with fresh DOT 4 brake fluid. Keep reservoir covered when not actively adding fluid to prevent contamination.
  12. 12
    Manual brake bleeding
Beginning with the wheel furthest from the master cylinder (right rear), attach bleeder hose to bleeder screw. Have assistant pump brake pedal 3-4 times and hold. Open bleeder screw to release fluid and air, then close before pedal reaches floor. Repeat until fluid runs clear without bubbles. Move to left rear, right front, then left front. Keep reservoir filled throughout process.
    Torque spec
    Bleeder Screw10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
  13. 13
    ABS automated bleeding procedure
Connect scan tool to OBD-II port. Navigate to ABS system and select automated bleeding function. Follow scan tool prompts to cycle ABS solenoids. The pump will activate and cycle valves to purge air from the hydraulic control unit. Monitor brake fluid reservoir and maintain proper level. After automated bleeding completes, repeat manual bleeding process at all four wheels to remove any remaining air.
    Torque spec
    Bleeder Screw10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
  14. 14
    Clear diagnostic codes
Using the scan tool, clear any ABS fault codes stored during the repair. Verify no new codes are present. Check that ABS warning light turns off after clearing codes and starting engine.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure brake fluid reservoir is filled to MAX line with fresh DOT 4 fluid
  2. Verify all brake line connections are tight and show no signs of leakage
  3. Confirm ABS electrical connector is fully seated and locked
  4. Double-check all wheel lug nuts are torqued properly
  5. Clean any spilled brake fluid from painted surfaces and components immediately

Verification

  • Start engine and verify ABS warning light illuminates briefly then turns off (normal bulb check)
  • With engine running, press brake pedal firmly and verify it feels solid with no excessive travel or sponginess
  • Pump brake pedal rapidly 10-15 times and verify pedal height remains consistent
  • Perform a low-speed test drive (under 10 mph in safe area) and apply brakes firmly to verify normal operation
  • Perform ABS function test: on dry pavement in safe area, accelerate to 15-20 mph and brake hard to activate ABS; verify pulsation at pedal and proper stop
  • Inspect all brake line connections at ABS pump for any signs of fluid seepage
  • Use scan tool to verify no ABS fault codes are present
  • Recheck brake fluid level after test drive and top off if necessary
