Airbag - Passenger

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the passenger-side airbag module in the dashboard of a 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500.

• Airbag module retaining clips (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

1. Ensure vehicle is parked on level ground with parking brake engaged and transmission in Park
2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key from ignition
3. Open driver's door and leave open throughout procedure to prevent accidental lockout
4. Disconnect negative battery terminal and secure cable away from battery post
5. Wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system capacitors to fully discharge before proceeding
6. Set driver's seat to rearmost position for improved access to lower dashboard area
7. Ensure you have a clean, padded workspace to place removed airbag module face-up

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove glove box assembly
   Open the glove box fully. Squeeze the sides of the glove box inward to release the stops and lower the glove box past the stop points. Locate the glove box hinge pins on each side. Depress the release tabs and slide the glove box assembly rearward to disconnect it from the dashboard. Set aside in a safe location.

   Disconnect passenger airbag electrical connector
   With the glove box removed, locate the yellow airbag connector behind the airbag module location. The connector will have a yellow housing with a locking tab. Press the locking tab and carefully pull the connector straight back to disconnect. Do not pull on the wires themselves. Allow the connector to hang freely.

   Access airbag module mounting bolts
   From behind the dashboard where the glove box was located, locate the airbag module mounting bolts. There are typically 4 bolts securing the passenger airbag module to the metal dashboard support structure. Use a flashlight to identify all bolt locations before proceeding. Note the position of any bracket tabs or alignment features.

   Remove airbag module mounting bolts
   Using the appropriate Torx bit (typically T30), remove all 4 airbag module mounting bolts. Support the airbag module from the front (passenger compartment side) while removing the final bolts to prevent it from falling. Keep bolts organized for reinstallation.

   Remove passenger airbag module from dashboard
   Carefully guide the airbag module rearward through the dashboard opening, being mindful of any remaining clips or guide tabs. Once clear, immediately place the airbag module face-up on a clean, padded surface in a secure location away from the work area. Never place the module face-down or stack anything on top of it.

   Inspect mounting area and hardware
   Inspect the dashboard mounting structure for any damage, cracks, or deformation. Check all mounting bolt threads and verify they are clean and undamaged. Inspect the wiring harness and connector for any signs of damage, corrosion, or wear. Replace any damaged components before installing the new airbag module.

   Prepare new airbag module for installation
   Remove the new airbag module from its packaging only when ready to install. Inspect the new module for any shipping damage. Verify the module part number matches the vehicle specifications. Check that all mounting tabs and alignment features are intact and undamaged.

   Install new airbag module into dashboard
   Carefully guide the new airbag module into position through the dashboard opening from the rear. Align the module with the mounting holes and any guide tabs. Ensure the module is fully seated against the dashboard structure before installing bolts. Verify proper alignment on all four corners.

   Install and torque airbag module mounting bolts
   Install all four airbag module mounting bolts by hand first to ensure proper thread engagement. Once all bolts are started, tighten them in a cross-pattern (diagonal) sequence using a torque wrench to the specified value of 7.0 Nm (5.0 lb-ft). Do not overtighten as this may damage the module or mounting structure.

    Reconnect passenger airbag electrical connector
    Locate the yellow airbag connector and carefully align it with the mating connector on the airbag module. Push the connector straight in until you hear and feel a positive click, indicating the locking tab has engaged. Gently tug on the connector housing to verify it is securely locked.

    Reinstall glove box assembly
    Position the glove box assembly and align the hinge pins with the mounting points on the dashboard. Slide the glove box forward until the hinge pins fully engage with a click. Close the glove box partially and verify the stops engage properly when opening fully.

    Reconnect battery and clear fault codes
    Reconnect the negative battery terminal and torque to specification of 8.0 Nm (6.0 lb-ft). Turn the ignition to ON position without starting the engine. The airbag warning light will illuminate and should remain on, indicating stored fault codes. Connect a capable scan tool and clear all airbag system diagnostic trouble codes. Follow scan tool prompts to complete airbag system initialization if required.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked before reconnecting battery
2. Verify glove box operates smoothly and all stops engage properly
3. Do not allow anyone to sit in the passenger seat until system verification is complete

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine). The airbag warning light should illuminate for approximately 6 seconds then turn off, indicating system is functioning normally
• If the airbag light remains illuminated or flashes, use scan tool to retrieve diagnostic codes and address any issues before returning vehicle to service
• Use scan tool to verify passenger airbag module is communicating properly with the airbag control module
• Perform a visual inspection to ensure the dashboard surface around the airbag module is flush with no gaps or misalignment
• Test glove box operation through full range of motion to ensure it does not interfere with airbag module
• If available, perform a deployment simulator test using appropriate scan tool or diagnostic equipment to verify circuit integrity without deploying airbag
• Document the repair with date, mileage, and part numbers for vehicle service records
