This procedure replaces the windshield wiper switch (multifunction lever) on the steering column of a 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500.

Warnings

Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait 2 minutes before working near airbag components to prevent accidental deployment
ℹ️The multifunction switch includes turn signal, high beam, and wiper controls - ensure you order the correct configuration for your trim level
ℹ️Take photos of connector orientations before disconnecting to aid reassembly

Parts

  • Windshield wiper switch assembly (multifunction lever) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition off and remove key
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system capacitor discharge
  4. Adjust steering column to lowest position and tilt wheel fully forward for better access
  5. Take photos of existing switch and connector positions for reference

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove lower steering column covers
Locate the two lower steering column cover screws on the underside of the column. Remove these screws using a Phillips screwdriver or Torx T15 driver depending on fastener type. Gently pull the lower cover downward and away from the column. Some models may have snap clips in addition to screws - use a trim tool to release if necessary.
  2. 2
    Remove upper steering column cover
With the lower cover removed, locate the upper cover fasteners (typically 2-3 screws at the top of the column shroud). Remove these screws and carefully lift the upper cover straight up and off the steering column. The cover may need to be maneuvered around the multifunction switch lever.
  3. 3
Locate and access wiper switch connector
With column covers removed, locate the wiper switch electrical connector on the left side of the steering column. The connector is part of a larger wiring harness bundle. You should see the wiper switch assembly mounted to the left side of the steering column with a mounting bracket.
  4. 4
    Disconnect wiper switch electrical connector
Press the locking tab on the electrical connector and carefully pull the connector straight away from the switch. Do not pull on the wires themselves. If connector is difficult to access, you may need to release any cable ties or routing clips holding the harness in place. Note the connector orientation for reassembly.
  5. 5
    Remove switch mounting fasteners
Locate the two screws or bolts securing the wiper switch assembly to the steering column bracket. These are typically Torx T15 screws. Remove these fasteners completely and set aside. On some models, there may be a single bracket bolt securing the switch housing.
  6. 6
    Remove wiper switch assembly
With fasteners removed, carefully pull the wiper switch lever and housing assembly straight out and away from the steering column. The assembly should slide out of the mounting bracket. Be careful not to damage any remaining wiring or the clock spring connector behind the steering wheel.
  7. 7
    Install new wiper switch assembly
Take the new wiper switch assembly and align it with the mounting bracket on the steering column. Ensure the switch is properly oriented with the lever pointing in the correct direction (downward when column is in normal position). Slide the assembly into place until it seats fully against the mounting bracket.
  8. 8
    Install and torque mounting fasteners
Install the switch mounting screws or bolts finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Then torque the fasteners to specification using a torque wrench. Verify the switch housing is secure and does not move when the lever is operated.

  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connector
Align the electrical connector with the switch terminal, ensuring the connector keys are properly oriented. Press the connector firmly into place until you hear or feel a positive click indicating the locking tab has engaged. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is locked.
  10. 10
    Reinstall steering column covers
Position the upper steering column cover over the column, maneuvering it around the switch lever. Install the upper cover screws and tighten to specification using a torque wrench. Position the lower cover and align all mounting points. Install lower cover screws and torque to specification. Ensure both covers are properly seated with no gaps.

    Cover Screws14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Reconnect battery and initialize system
Reconnect the negative battery terminal and torque the terminal bolt to specification. Do not overtighten the battery terminal. Turn the ignition to the ON position without starting the engine. The instrument cluster will go through an initialization sequence.

    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all steering column covers are fully seated and all screws are properly torqued
  2. Verify wiper switch lever operates smoothly through all positions without binding
  3. Check that no wiring is pinched between covers or near moving column components
  4. Confirm battery terminal is secure and properly torqued

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position and test wiper switch through all settings: off, intermittent (all delay settings), low speed, and high speed
  • Verify washer function operates correctly when switch is pulled toward driver
  • Test that turn signal and high beam functions still operate correctly if integrated into same lever
  • Confirm no warning lights related to wiper system appear on instrument cluster
  • Cycle wipers several times and verify they park correctly in the off position
  • Check that intermittent delay adjustment works correctly through full range
  • Ensure steering column covers are secure and do not rattle when driving
