Warnings
⚠️Ensure vehicle is on level ground and properly supported on jack stands before working underneath. Never rely solely on a floor jack.
⚠Allow engine to cool for at least 1 hour before beginning work to prevent burns from hot oil and components.
⚠Used engine oil contains harmful contaminants. Avoid prolonged skin contact and dispose of properly at a recycling center.
ℹ️Keep track of all removed fasteners and components. Take photos during disassembly if needed for reference.

Fluids
- ACDelco dexos1 0W-20 Engine Oil — 8.5 qt
- Windshield Washer Fluid — 3.5 qt
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Allow engine to cool completely (minimum 1 hour)
- Gather all tools, parts, and fluids before beginning
- Raise front of vehicle with floor jack and secure on jack stands at frame rails
- Remove engine oil filler cap to aid drainage
Procedure
- 1Drain engine oilPosition oil drain pan under oil pan drain plug. Remove drain plug using appropriate socket and allow oil to drain completely (approximately 10-15 minutes). Inspect drain plug threads and oil pan threads for damage. Replace crush washer on drain plug. Reinstall drain plug and torque to specification.
- 2Replace engine oil filterLocate oil filter on driver side of engine block. Position drain pan under filter. Use oil filter wrench to remove old filter by turning counterclockwise. Clean filter mounting surface on engine block. Apply thin coat of clean engine oil to rubber gasket of new filter. Install new filter by hand, turning clockwise until gasket contacts mounting surface, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn. Do not use filter wrench for installation.
- 3Fill engine with new oilLower vehicle to ground. Using funnel, pour 8 quarts of ACDelco dexos1 0W-20 oil into engine. Install oil filler cap. Start engine and allow to run for 1 minute, checking for leaks at drain plug and filter. Shut off engine and wait 5 minutes. Check oil level with dipstick and add remaining 0.5 quarts as needed to reach FULL mark.
- 4Replace engine air filterOpen hood and locate air filter housing on driver side of engine bay. Release air box clips and lift cover. Remove old air filter and inspect housing for debris. Clean housing interior if needed. Install new air filter ensuring proper seating in housing. Reinstall cover and secure clips to specification.
- 5Replace cabin air filterOpen glove box and remove contents. Press inward on both sides of glove box to release stops and lower completely. Locate cabin air filter access door behind glove box. Release tabs and remove access door. Slide old cabin air filter out, noting airflow direction arrow. Install new filter with arrow pointing toward rear of vehicle. Reinstall access door and reset glove box stops.
- 6Remove and inspect spark plugs (cylinders 1-4)Disconnect ignition coil electrical connectors on right cylinder bank (passenger side). Remove coil mounting bolts and pull coils straight up from spark plug wells. Use compressed air to clean debris from around spark plug wells. Using spark plug socket, remove spark plugs from cylinders 1, 3, 5, and 7. Inspect old plugs for wear, fouling, or abnormal deposits which may indicate engine issues.⚠Do not remove spark plugs from hot engine as this may damage cylinder head threads.
- 7Install new spark plugs (cylinders 1-4)Check gap on new spark plugs (should be 0.035 inches for L83 engine). Do not assume new plugs are properly gapped. Apply small amount of anti-seize compound to spark plug threads (avoid getting any on electrodes). Install spark plugs by hand into cylinders 1, 3, 5, and 7, turning until finger-tight. Use spark plug socket to tighten: 1/4 turn (90 degrees) beyond finger-tight for new plugs. Reinstall ignition coils and torque mounting bolts. Reconnect electrical connectors.
- 8Remove and inspect spark plugs (cylinders 5-8)Disconnect ignition coil electrical connectors on left cylinder bank (driver side). Remove coil mounting bolts and pull coils straight up from spark plug wells. Use compressed air to clean debris from around spark plug wells. Using spark plug socket, remove spark plugs from cylinders 2, 4, 6, and 8. Inspect old plugs for wear, fouling, or abnormal deposits.
- 9Install new spark plugs (cylinders 5-8)Check gap on new spark plugs (0.035 inches). Apply small amount of anti-seize compound to spark plug threads. Install spark plugs by hand into cylinders 2, 4, 6, and 8, turning until finger-tight. Use spark plug socket to tighten 1/4 turn (90 degrees) beyond finger-tight. Reinstall ignition coils and torque mounting bolts. Reconnect electrical connectors.
- 10Inspect fluid levels and conditionCheck and top off coolant level in overflow reservoir (engine cold only). Inspect coolant color (should be orange DEX-COOL). Check brake fluid level in master cylinder reservoir and inspect for contamination. Check power steering fluid level and condition. Verify transmission fluid level is in acceptable range using dipstick (engine warm, transmission in Park). Fill windshield washer fluid reservoir.⚠️Never open radiator cap or coolant reservoir when engine is hot. Pressurized coolant can cause severe burns.
- 11Rotate tires and inspectLoosen all wheel lug nuts while vehicle is on ground. Raise vehicle and support on jack stands at all four corners. Remove all wheels. Inspect tires for wear, damage, and proper tread depth (minimum 4/32 inch). Rotate tires in appropriate pattern for RWD vehicle (front to rear same side, rear cross to front). Inspect brake pads and rotors for wear. Check suspension components for damage or excessive wear.
- 12Reinstall wheels and torque lug nutsInstall wheels onto hubs, ensuring clean contact surfaces. Hand-thread all lug nuts. Lower vehicle until tires just contact ground but weight is still on jack stands. Torque lug nuts in star pattern to specification. Fully lower vehicle and remove jack stands. Perform final torque check on all lug nuts in star pattern.
- 13Inspect belts, hoses, and undercarriageVisually inspect serpentine belt for cracks, glazing, or fraying. Check belt tension (should have approximately 1/2 inch deflection). Inspect all coolant hoses and clamps for leaks or deterioration. Check for fluid leaks from engine, transmission, differential, and brake components. Inspect exhaust system for damage or loose connections. Check shock absorbers for leaks.
- 14Set tire pressures and reset maintenance reminderAdjust tire pressures to specification listed on driver door jamb placard (typically 35 PSI front and rear for standard load). Check spare tire pressure. Reset oil life monitoring system: Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine. Fully depress accelerator pedal three times within 5 seconds. Turn ignition off. Oil life should reset to 100%.
Reassembly
- Ensure all fluid caps are properly installed and tightened
- Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and secured
- Confirm no tools or rags were left in engine bay
- Close hood and ensure proper latch engagement
Verification
- Start engine and verify no warning lights on instrument cluster
- Listen for unusual noises or rough idle after spark plug replacement
- Check ground under vehicle for any fluid leaks after running engine
- Verify oil level is at FULL mark on dipstick with engine off
- Test drive vehicle for 5-10 minutes and recheck all fluid levels
- Verify oil life monitor has been reset to 100%
- Confirm all tire pressures are correct and wheels are properly torqued
- Document service with date and mileage for maintenance records
