Expert-verified. Personally reviewed and approved by OLP's master technicians (Chris Hackleman — 20+ years each). Always follow the vehicle's factory service information and torque specs.

This procedure replaces the driver's airbag module in the steering wheel, requiring battery disconnection, steering wheel removal, and proper SRS system handling.

Warnings

⚠️AIRBAG SYSTEM: Accidental deployment can cause severe injury or death. Follow all procedures exactly. Wait minimum 2 minutes after battery disconnect before touching any airbag components.
⚠️Never point an airbag module at yourself or others. Always place removed airbag face-up on a clean, flat surface away from work area.
⚠️Do not strike, drop, or jar the airbag module. Handle only by the edges. Do not insert tools or fingers into airbag deployment area.
Disconnect both battery terminals (negative first, then positive) to prevent accidental airbag deployment. Vehicle must remain OFF for entire procedure.
If airbag connectors use Connector Position Assurance (CPA) locks, ensure they click firmly into place during reassembly or airbag will not function.
ℹ️After airbag replacement, the system requires verification. The airbag light should illuminate briefly at key-on then extinguish. If light stays on, seek professional diagnosis immediately.
ℹ️Mark steering wheel position before removal to maintain proper alignment and avoid turning angle sensor issues.

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground with wheels pointed straight ahead
  2. Turn ignition OFF and remove key from vehicle
  3. Ensure all accessories are OFF
  4. Roll down driver's window in case you need to access interior after battery disconnect
  5. Photograph or mark steering wheel position relative to column for reinstallation alignment
  6. Gather all tools and new airbag module before beginning

Procedure

  1. 1
Disconnect battery and wait safety interval
Open hood and disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal first, then disconnect the positive (+) terminal. Move cables away from posts to prevent accidental contact. Wait minimum 2 minutes to allow airbag system capacitors to fully discharge. Set a timer and do not proceed until time has elapsed.
⚠️The 2-minute wait is mandatory. Capacitors retain charge that can deploy airbag if you proceed too soon.

  2. 2
    Access rear airbag module fasteners
From behind the steering wheel, locate two Torx bolts (one on each side) securing the airbag module. These are accessed through holes in the rear of the steering wheel. On 2014-2018 Silverado, these are typically T30 Torx bolts located at approximately 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions.
  3. 3
    Remove airbag module fasteners
Using a T30 Torx bit, carefully loosen and remove both airbag module mounting bolts from the rear of the steering wheel. Support the airbag module from the front as you remove the second bolt to prevent it from falling. Keep bolts in a safe location for reinstallation.

    Airbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
  4. 4
Carefully remove airbag module from wheel
Gently pull the airbag module straight away from the steering wheel hub. Do not pull on wiring. Once module has clearance (approximately 2-3 inches), stop and support it with one hand while accessing connectors with the other.
⚠️Keep airbag module pointed away from your body at all times during removal.
  5. 5
    Disconnect airbag electrical connectors
Locate the airbag electrical connector(s) on the back of the module. Release any Connector Position Assurance (CPA) lock by lifting or sliding the yellow/orange tab. Press the release tab on the connector and carefully pull connector straight out from airbag module. On this vehicle there is typically one main 2-wire connector (yellow). If equipped with steering wheel controls, there may be an additional connector.
CPA locks must be fully released before attempting to disconnect connectors or you risk damaging the connector.
  6. 6
    Secure removed airbag module
Immediately place the removed airbag module face-UP on a clean, flat, stable surface in a secure area away from the work zone. Never place airbag face-down or lean anything against it. Keep module away from heat, electrical sources, and high-traffic areas.
⚠️Airbag MUST be placed face-up. Face-down placement can cause injury if accidental deployment occurs.
  7. 7
    Inspect steering wheel and wiring
With airbag removed, inspect the steering wheel hub for any damage or cracks. Inspect the airbag wiring harness and connectors for damage, corrosion, or wear. Check that the horn contact ring (if equipped) is clean and properly positioned. Verify steering wheel nut is secure.

  8. 8
    Prepare new airbag module
Remove new airbag module from packaging. Inspect for any shipping damage. Keep module face-up at all times. Verify part number matches vehicle application. Do not remove connector dust covers until ready to install.
  9. 9
    Connect new airbag electrical connectors
Remove dust covers from new airbag connectors. Align steering wheel airbag connector with new module connector and push together firmly until you hear/feel a click. Install Connector Position Assurance (CPA) lock by pressing yellow/orange tab fully into locked position until it clicks. Gently tug on connector to verify it is locked. Reconnect any additional connectors if present.
CPA locks MUST click into place. An improperly locked connector will cause airbag malfunction and illuminate warning light.
  10. 10
Install airbag module to steering wheel
Carefully tuck wiring into steering wheel cavity to prevent pinching. Align new airbag module with steering wheel mounting holes, ensuring no wires are trapped between module and wheel. Push module gently into position against steering wheel hub. Verify module seats flush against wheel on all sides before installing fasteners.
Pinched wiring can cause airbag malfunction or accidental deployment. Verify all wires have clearance.
  11. 11
    Install and torque airbag fasteners
Insert both Torx mounting bolts through rear of steering wheel into airbag module. Hand-thread both bolts several turns to ensure proper thread engagement. Using torque wrench with T30 Torx bit, torque both airbag module bolts to exactly 7.0 Nm (5.0 lb-ft). Alternate between bolts, tightening gradually to ensure even seating.
Correct torque is critical. Over-torquing can damage airbag module and affect deployment. Under-torquing can allow module movement.

  12. 12
    Verify airbag installation
Confirm airbag module is flush and secure against steering wheel with no gaps. Verify no wires are visible or pinched. Gently attempt to move airbag module - it should not shift or rattle. Confirm both mounting bolts are properly torqued.
  13. 13
    Reconnect battery
Reconnect positive (+) battery terminal first, then negative (-) terminal. Torque both battery terminal bolts to 8.0 Nm (6.0 lb-ft). Ensure terminals are clean and making good contact.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure no tools or parts are left in vehicle before testing
  2. Verify steering wheel position matches pre-removal alignment marks
  3. Close hood and ensure all work area is clear

Verification

  • Without starting engine, turn ignition to ON position (do not start). The airbag warning light should illuminate for approximately 6 seconds, then turn OFF
  • If airbag light stays illuminated, flashes, or does not illuminate at all, DO NOT DRIVE VEHICLE. System requires professional diagnosis
  • Start engine and verify airbag light remains OFF during operation
  • Test horn operation to verify no wiring damage occurred during service
  • After successful verification, test drive in safe area to confirm no warning lights appear
  • If any airbag-related codes or lights appear within 24 hours of repair, seek immediate professional service
