This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the audio amplifier located under the rear seat in a 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500.

Warnings

Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait 2 minutes before working on audio system to prevent airbag deployment and electrical shorts
ℹ️The amplifier is located under the rear seat on crew cab and double cab models; extended cab models may have different amplifier location
Do not force electrical connectors as the locking tabs are fragile and break easily

Parts

  • Audio amplifier module × 1 — GM Part #23268356 or equivalent Bose amplifier
  • Amplifier mounting hardware (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition off and remove key
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait at least 2 minutes
  4. Ensure rear seat area is clear of all objects and debris
  5. If equipped with heated rear seats, verify system is completely cool

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove rear seat cushion
Locate the two seat cushion retaining clips at the front edge of the rear seat bottom. Push down firmly on the seat cushion while pulling upward and forward to disengage the retaining clips. Lift the front of the cushion up and pull forward to remove completely from the vehicle.
  2. 2
    Access amplifier location
With the rear seat cushion removed, locate the amplifier mounted to the floor pan on the driver side under where the seat was positioned. Use a vacuum to remove any debris from the area. The amplifier will be a black metal box approximately 8x10 inches with multiple wiring harnesses connected.
  3. 3
    Disconnect amplifier electrical connectors
Identify all electrical connectors attached to the amplifier (typically 3-5 connectors depending on audio system). Press the locking tab on each connector while pulling straight out from the amplifier. Work slowly and use a trim tool if needed to access tabs in tight spaces. Note the position and color of each connector for reinstallation.
  4. 4
    Remove amplifier mounting bolts
Using a 10mm socket, remove the four mounting bolts securing the amplifier to the floor pan bracket. Keep bolts organized as they will be reused. Note the orientation of the amplifier and any grounding straps attached.

  5. 5
    Remove amplifier from vehicle
Carefully lift the amplifier away from the mounting bracket, ensuring no wiring harnesses are still connected or pinched. Inspect the mounting location for any corrosion, water damage, or debris that may have caused amplifier failure.
  6. 6
Inspect mounting area and clean contacts
Check the floor pan and mounting bracket for rust, water intrusion, or damage. If present, address water leaks before installing new amplifier. Clean all ground contact points on the bracket with electrical contact cleaner or a wire brush. Ensure mounting surfaces are clean and dry.
  7. 7
    Install new amplifier
Position the new amplifier onto the mounting bracket in the same orientation as the original. Align all four mounting bolt holes. Ensure any ground straps are positioned correctly between the amplifier and bracket with clean metal-to-metal contact.
  8. 8
    Install and torque mounting bolts
Thread all four mounting bolts by hand first to ensure proper alignment. Tighten bolts in a cross pattern to ensure even seating. Torque all mounting bolts to specification using a torque wrench.

    Reconnect electrical connectors
Connect each electrical harness to the corresponding port on the new amplifier, referencing notes or photos taken during removal. Push each connector firmly until the locking tab clicks into place. Gently pull on each connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
  10. 10
    Reconnect battery and test system
Reconnect the negative battery terminal and torque to specification. Turn the ignition to ON position (do not start engine). Test the audio system on all sources (radio, Bluetooth, auxiliary) and verify all speakers are functioning. Test fade, balance, and subwoofer controls if equipped.

  11. 11
    Reinstall rear seat cushion
Position the rear seat cushion with the rear hooks engaged first, then press down firmly on the front edge until both retaining clips snap into place. Verify the seat is securely installed by pulling upward on the front edge.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked before testing
  2. Verify no tools or parts are left under the rear seat before reinstalling cushion
  3. Test all audio system functions including steering wheel controls and voice commands if equipped

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON and verify no warning lights or messages related to audio system
  • Test all speakers individually using fade and balance controls to confirm proper amplifier output
  • Verify subwoofer output if equipped by playing bass-heavy audio
  • Test audio system at various volume levels to ensure no distortion or cutting out
  • Confirm steering wheel audio controls and any premium audio features function correctly
  • Check that rear seat cushion is properly secured and does not rattle
