Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. Loosen front wheel lug nuts while vehicle is on ground but do not remove
  4. Raise front of vehicle and support securely on jack stands at frame rails
  5. Remove front wheels completely
  6. Spray all ball joint nuts and control arm bolts with penetrating oil and allow to soak for 10-15 minutes

    Remove brake caliper and rotor
    Remove brake caliper mounting bolts and hang caliper from frame using wire or bungee cord to avoid stressing brake hose. Remove brake rotor to provide clearance for ball joint work. Do not let caliper hang by the brake hose.

    Locate the sway bar end link connecting to the lower control arm. Hold the shaft with an Allen key to prevent rotation and remove the retaining nut. Disconnect the sway bar link from the lower control arm to provide working clearance.

    Remove upper ball joint cotter pin and castle nut
    Use cotter pin puller to remove the cotter pin from the upper ball joint castle nut. Discard the old cotter pin. Using a socket and breaker bar, loosen but do not fully remove the upper ball joint castle nut. Leave the nut threaded on a few turns to catch the knuckle when the taper is broken.
    Leaving the nut partially threaded prevents the knuckle from falling when the taper breaks free.

    Separate upper ball joint from knuckle
    Place a floor jack under the lower control arm to support the weight of the suspension. Using a pickle fork or ball joint separator, break the taper connection between the upper ball joint and steering knuckle. Strike the separator firmly with a hammer. Once the taper is broken, remove the castle nut completely and separate the knuckle from the upper ball joint.

    Remove lower ball joint cotter pin and castle nut
    Remove the cotter pin from the lower ball joint castle nut and discard. Loosen the lower ball joint castle nut but leave it threaded on a few turns. The floor jack under the lower control arm should be supporting the suspension weight.

    Separate lower ball joint from knuckle
    With the knuckle supported and the lower castle nut loosened, use a ball joint separator or pickle fork to break the taper between the lower ball joint and steering knuckle. Apply force with a hammer to drive the separator. Once the taper breaks, remove the castle nut completely and pivot the knuckle assembly out of the way to access both ball joints.
    Support the knuckle and hub assembly to prevent it from falling or damaging the CV axle boot.

    Press out old upper ball joint
    Using a ball joint press with appropriate adapters, position the tool to press the upper ball joint out of the upper control arm. Apply steady pressure with the press until the ball joint is completely removed from the control arm bore. Clean the control arm bore thoroughly with a wire brush, removing all dirt, rust, and old grease.

    Install new upper ball joint
    Inspect the new upper ball joint for any shipping damage. Position the new upper ball joint in the upper control arm bore with the correct orientation (grease fitting accessible). Using the ball joint press with appropriate receiving cups and adapters, press the upper ball joint into the control arm until it is fully seated against the control arm shoulder. Ensure the ball joint is pressed in squarely and completely.
    The ball joint must be pressed in straight to avoid damaging the control arm bore or ball joint. Verify proper alignment before applying pressure.

    Install new lower ball joint
    Position the new lower ball joint in the lower control arm bore in the correct orientation. Using the ball joint press, press the lower ball joint into the control arm until fully seated. The ball joint should sit flush against the control arm stop. Apply a small amount of grease to the ball stud taper before assembly.

    Reconnect lower ball joint to knuckle
    Ensure the ball joint taper and knuckle bore are clean and completely dry with no grease or oil. Position the steering knuckle over the lower ball joint stud and start the castle nut by hand. Use a floor jack to raise the lower control arm and align the components as needed. Torque the lower ball joint castle nut to specification. Install a new cotter pin through the castle nut slots and ball joint stud, bending the ends to secure.
    The taper must be absolutely clean and dry. Any contamination will prevent proper torque seating and can cause premature failure.

Use the floor jack to align the suspension geometry as needed. Torque the upper ball joint castle nut to specification. Install a new cotter pin and bend the ends to lock it in place.

    Reinstall brake components and wheel

Reassembly
