This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the 12-volt battery on a 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L V8 EcoTec3 engine.

Warnings

Always disconnect the negative terminal first to prevent short circuits
Battery acid is corrosive - avoid contact with skin, eyes, and clothing
ℹ️Disconnecting the battery will reset radio presets, clock, and some adaptive settings
Do not overtighten battery terminal bolts as this can crack the terminal posts

Parts

  • 12V automotive battery (Group 48/H6) × 1 — Use OEM specification or equivalent CCA rating
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion spray or felt washers × 1 — Optional

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
  2. Turn off engine and all electrical accessories
  3. Remove key from ignition
  4. If using a battery memory saver, connect it according to manufacturer instructions before disconnecting battery
  5. Open hood and prop securely

Procedure

  1. 1
    Locate and access the battery
The battery is located in the engine bay on the driver's side. Remove the engine cover if equipped by lifting upward - it is retained by rubber grommets. Ensure clear access to the battery and terminal connections.
  2. 2
    Disconnect the negative battery cable
Using a 10mm socket, loosen the bolt on the negative (-) battery terminal (marked with a minus sign or black cover). Remove the bolt completely and carefully lift the cable terminal off the battery post. Position the cable away from the battery so it cannot accidentally contact the terminal.
Always disconnect negative terminal first to prevent accidental shorts

  3. 3
    Disconnect the positive battery cable
Remove the red protective cover from the positive (+) terminal. Using a 10mm socket, loosen and remove the bolt securing the positive cable terminal. Carefully lift the cable terminal off the battery post and position it away from the battery.

    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Remove the battery hold-down bracket
Locate the battery hold-down bracket at the base of the battery. Using a 13mm socket with extension, remove the hold-down bolt. The bracket may have a J-hook design - lift it straight up and out once the bolt is removed.
    Torque spec
    Battery Hold-Down Bolt8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  5. 5
    Remove the old battery
Carefully lift the battery straight up and out of the battery tray. Batteries are heavy (approximately 40-50 lbs) - use proper lifting technique with bent knees and straight back. Avoid tilting the battery excessively to prevent acid leakage.
  6. 6
Clean the battery tray and cables
Inspect the battery tray for corrosion, dirt, or acid buildup. Clean with a baking soda and water solution if needed, then rinse and dry thoroughly. Use a battery terminal cleaner brush or wire brush to clean the cable terminals and remove any corrosion. Inspect cables for damage, cracks, or excessive corrosion.
  7. 7
    Install the new battery
Verify the new battery has the correct group size (48/H6) and terminal orientation (posts on the driver's side). Carefully lower the new battery into the tray, ensuring it seats fully and the terminals are positioned correctly for cable attachment.
  8. 8
    Install the battery hold-down bracket
Position the hold-down bracket over the battery base. Insert the hold-down bolt and hand-thread it. Using a 13mm socket and torque wrench, tighten the bolt to specification. Ensure the battery is secure but the bracket does not deform the battery case.
    Torque spec
    Battery Hold-Down Bolt8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  9. 9
    Connect the positive battery cable
Place the positive (+) cable terminal onto the positive battery post. Ensure the terminal is fully seated on the post. Install the terminal bolt and hand-tighten. Using a 10mm socket and torque wrench, tighten to specification. Do not overtighten as this can crack the terminal post. Replace the red protective cover.
Do not overtighten - excessive force will damage the battery post

  10. 10
    Connect the negative battery cable
Place the negative (-) cable terminal onto the negative battery post. Ensure full contact with the post. Install the terminal bolt and hand-tighten. Using a 10mm socket and torque wrench, tighten to specification. Apply anti-corrosion spray or install felt washers if desired.
ℹ️Connecting negative terminal may cause a small spark - this is normal

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall engine cover if equipped by pressing down firmly over mounting grommets
  2. Remove battery memory saver if used
  3. Close hood securely

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position (do not start) and verify dash lights illuminate properly
  • Start the engine and confirm it cranks and starts normally
  • Verify all electrical accessories function correctly (lights, radio, windows, etc.)
  • Check battery terminals for tightness - they should not rotate or move on the posts
  • Reset clock and radio presets as needed
  • If equipped with electronic throttle body, allow engine to idle for 3-5 minutes to relearn idle parameters
