Blower Motor

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the HVAC blower motor assembly located in the lower passenger side of the dash on 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 models with the 5.3L V8 engine.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
2. Turn ignition off and remove key
3. Disconnect negative battery cable
4. Wait at least 2 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge
5. Remove any floor mats from passenger side footwell
6. Adjust passenger seat fully rearward and upward for maximum access
7. Allow HVAC system to cool completely if recently operated

Procedure

1. 1

   Access the blower motor area
   Position yourself in the passenger footwell. The blower motor is located on the lower right side of the HVAC case, beneath the glove box area. You may need to remove the passenger side lower dash insulator panel if equipped for better access. Use a flashlight to locate the blower motor cover.

   Disconnect blower motor electrical connector
   Locate the blower motor electrical connector on the side of the blower motor assembly. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight out from the blower motor. Inspect the connector terminals for corrosion or damage. Do not pull on the wires themselves.

   Remove blower motor cooling tube
   The blower motor has a cooling air tube connected to it. Gently pull the rubber cooling tube off the blower motor housing. This tube provides cooling air from the cabin to the motor. Note its orientation for reinstallation.

   Remove blower motor mounting screws
   Using a 7mm socket or nut driver, remove the three screws securing the blower motor assembly to the HVAC case. These screws are arranged in a triangular pattern around the blower motor flange. Support the blower motor with one hand as you remove the final screw to prevent it from falling.
   ⚠Support the blower motor assembly as you remove the last screw, as it weighs approximately 3-4 pounds and can fall into the footwell

   Remove blower motor assembly
   Carefully rotate and pull the blower motor assembly out of the HVAC case opening. You may need to angle it slightly to clear the fan cage through the opening. Lower the assembly down into the passenger footwell and remove it from the vehicle. Be careful not to damage the fan blades.

   Clean the HVAC case opening
   With the blower motor removed, use a shop vacuum to clean any debris, leaves, or dirt from the HVAC case opening and the area around the blower motor mounting flange. Inspect the HVAC case for any cracks or damage. Clean the sealing surface where the blower motor mounts.

   Prepare new blower motor
   Remove the new blower motor from its packaging and verify it matches the original. Check that the fan cage rotates freely and that the electrical connector pins are clean and undamaged. Compare mounting hole positions with the old unit.

   Install new blower motor assembly
   Guide the new blower motor assembly up into the HVAC case opening from the passenger footwell. Angle the assembly as needed to clear the fan cage through the opening. Align the mounting holes in the blower motor flange with the holes in the HVAC case. Ensure the blower motor is fully seated against the case before installing screws.

   Install blower motor mounting screws
   Thread all three mounting screws by hand first to ensure proper alignment and prevent cross-threading. Once all screws are started, tighten them in a star pattern using a 7mm socket. Torque the screws to specification using a torque wrench. Do not overtighten as the housing is plastic.

    Reconnect cooling tube and electrical connector
    Push the rubber cooling air tube firmly onto the blower motor housing inlet in the same orientation as removed. Reconnect the electrical connector to the blower motor, ensuring it clicks into place and the locking tab engages fully. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is secured.

    Reinstall lower dash panels
    If the passenger side lower dash insulator panel was removed, reinstall it now ensuring all clips are properly seated. Return the passenger seat to its normal position.

    Reconnect battery
    Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery terminal. Tighten the battery terminal bolt to specification using a torque wrench.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all electrical connections are fully seated and locked
2. Verify cooling tube is properly attached to prevent motor overheating
3. Confirm all mounting screws are torqued to specification
4. Reinstall any trim panels or insulation removed during access

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine
• Turn blower motor control to LOW speed and verify motor operates smoothly without unusual noise
• Test all blower speed settings (LOW, MEDIUM-LOW, MEDIUM-HIGH, HIGH) to confirm proper operation
• Verify airflow is strong and consistent at all speed settings
• Listen for any rattling, squealing, or grinding noises that would indicate improper installation
• Check that air flow direction changes properly with mode selection (floor, dash, defrost)
• Verify no air leaks around the blower motor mounting area
• Confirm cooling tube remains attached during operation
