Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level, solid ground and engage parking brake firmly
  2. Chock rear wheels securely on both sides
  3. Loosen front wheel lug nuts 1/4 turn while vehicle is on ground (do not remove)
  4. Lift front of vehicle using proper jacking points per owner's manual
  5. Support vehicle securely on jack stands rated for vehicle weight at manufacturer-specified support points
  6. Remove front wheels completely and set aside
  7. Verify vehicle is stable before proceeding

    Before removing caliper, use a large C-clamp or brake caliper piston tool to slowly compress the caliper piston back into its bore. Place the clamp against the back of the caliper body and the outer brake pad. Compress slowly to push brake fluid back into the master cylinder reservoir. This prevents difficulty during reassembly and spillage.
    Monitor brake fluid reservoir during compression. Fluid level will rise and may overflow if reservoir was topped off. Remove excess fluid with a turkey baster if necessary.

    Remove caliper slide pin bolts
    Locate the two caliper slide pin bolts on the rear of the caliper (facing toward engine). These are 18mm bolts. Remove both slide pin bolts completely and set aside. Note the condition of the slide pins and rubber boots for reassembly.
    If bolts are seized, apply penetrating oil and allow to soak. Do not force or you may break the bolt in the bracket.

    Remove and support caliper
    Carefully lift the caliper off the caliper bracket and rotor. The brake pads may come with the caliper or remain in the bracket - note their position. Immediately support the caliper using wire or a bungee cord attached to the suspension or frame. DO NOT allow the caliper to hang by the brake hose.
    ⚠️Never let the caliper hang unsupported by the brake hose. Hose damage can cause complete brake failure.

    Remove brake pads (if needed)
    If brake pads remained in the caliper bracket, remove them and set aside. Note the position of any anti-rattle clips or shims. Inspect pad thickness - if less than 3mm of friction material remains, pads should be replaced (requires separate procedure).

    Remove caliper bracket bolts
    Using a 21mm socket and breaker bar, remove the two caliper bracket bolts that secure the bracket to the steering knuckle. These bolts are torqued to high specification and may require significant force. Remove both bolts and then remove the entire caliper bracket.
    These bolts are very tight. Ensure socket is fully seated to avoid rounding the bolt heads. Use a 6-point socket if available.

    Remove rotor set screws (if equipped)
    Locate the one or two T30 Torx set screws on the face of the rotor that secure it to the hub. These may be very tight or corroded. Apply penetrating oil if needed and remove the set screw(s). If screws are damaged or stripped, they may need to be drilled out - the rotor can be installed without them.
    ℹ️Set screws are only for assembly and are not required for safe operation. If damaged beyond removal, proceed without them.

    Remove old rotor
    Pull the rotor straight off the hub. If rotor is stuck due to corrosion, tap around the inner hat section with a dead blow hammer or rubber mallet. Do not strike the rotor friction surface. If severely stuck, thread two M8 or M10 bolts into the threaded holes on the rotor face (if present) and tighten evenly to push rotor off hub.

    Clean hub mounting surface
    Use a wire brush to thoroughly clean the hub mounting surface where the rotor sits. Remove all rust, corrosion, and debris. The surface must be clean and flat for proper rotor seating. Clean the wheel studs and threads as well. Spray with brake cleaner and wipe dry.
    Rust or debris on the hub surface will cause rotor runout and pulsation. Ensure surface is completely clean and smooth.

    Install new rotor
    Remove protective coating from new rotor using brake cleaner and clean rags (both sides of rotor). Slide new rotor onto hub, aligning holes if set screws will be used. Ensure rotor sits flat against hub surface with no gaps or interference.
    New rotors have a protective oil coating that MUST be removed with brake cleaner before installation or braking will be severely compromised.

    Install rotor set screws
    If rotor set screws are being reused or new ones installed, apply a small amount of anti-seize to threads and install finger-tight, then torque to specification using T30 Torx bit and torque wrench.

    Reinstall caliper bracket
    Clean caliper bracket bolt threads and holes in steering knuckle with wire brush. Apply medium-strength threadlocker to caliper bracket bolt threads as recommended. Position caliper bracket over rotor and align bolt holes. Start both bolts by hand, then torque to specification in a cross pattern.
    Threadlocker is recommended to prevent loosening. Ensure bolts are torqued to exact specification - these are critical fasteners.

    Prepare caliper slide pins
    Inspect caliper slide pin bolts and rubber boots for damage, tears, or excessive wear. Remove old grease from slide pins. Apply fresh silicone brake grease liberally to the smooth portion of each slide pin shaft. Ensure boots are properly seated.
    Do not use petroleum-based grease on brake components. Use only silicone brake grease or brake assembly lube.

    Reinstall brake pads and caliper
    If brake pads were removed, reinstall them in the caliper bracket in their original positions with any clips or shims. Carefully position caliper over pads and rotor, ensuring piston is still fully compressed. Align caliper slide pin bolt holes.

    Apply silicone brake grease to slide pin bolt threads. Insert both caliper slide pin bolts and thread in by hand to start. Torque both bolts to specification. Verify caliper is secure and positioned correctly over rotor.

    Reinstall wheel and torque lug nuts
    Place wheel onto hub and install all lug nuts by hand. Using a torque wrench, torque lug nuts to specification in a star pattern (not in sequence around the wheel). Make at least two complete passes in star pattern to ensure even seating.
    Improper lug nut torque or pattern can cause wheel vibration or loss. Always use star pattern and proper torque specification.

Reassembly

  1. Repeat entire procedure for opposite side front rotor
  2. After both sides are complete, lower vehicle from jack stands to ground but keep jack supporting weight
  3. Re-torque all wheel lug nuts to specification in star pattern with vehicle on ground
  4. Fully lower vehicle and remove jack

Verification

  • Before moving vehicle, pump brake pedal firmly several times until pedal feels firm and normal. First pedal stroke may feel soft as pads reseat against rotors.
