Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is completely cool to the touch
  2. Disconnect negative battery cable to prevent accidental short circuits
  3. Label or photograph coil positions if replacing multiple coils to ensure correct cylinder identification
  4. Clean engine cover area to prevent debris from entering cylinders

Procedure

    Remove engine appearance cover
    Remove the plastic engine cover by pulling upward firmly on the cover. It is retained by rubber grommets on posts and requires no tools. Set cover aside in clean area.

    Disconnect electrical connector
    Press down on the locking tab of the ignition coil electrical connector and pull straight up to disconnect. The connector is located on top of each coil assembly. Do not pull on wires.

    Remove ignition coil bolt
    Using a 7mm socket, remove the single bolt securing the ignition coil to the valve cover. The bolt is located at the center of the coil body. Keep bolt in clean location for reinstallation.

    Remove ignition coil
    Grasp the coil body firmly and twist gently while pulling straight up to break the seal between coil boot and spark plug. Remove coil completely from valve cover opening. The rubber boot should remain attached to coil.
    If boot remains stuck on spark plug, use needle-nose pliers to carefully extract it before proceeding

    Clean spark plug tube
    Use compressed air or shop vacuum to remove any debris, oil, or dirt from the spark plug tube and surrounding valve cover area. Ensure no foreign material will fall into cylinder when spark plug is removed.

    Inspect spark plug (optional but recommended)
    If performing complete ignition service, remove spark plug using 5/8 inch spark plug socket. Inspect plug condition for wear, fouling, or damage. Replace if electrode gap exceeds specification or plug shows 100,000+ miles of service.

    Prepare new ignition coil
    Inspect new coil boot for damage or tears. Apply thin layer of dielectric grease to inside of rubber boot and around spark plug terminal area. This prevents moisture intrusion and ensures proper seal.

    Install new ignition coil
    Align coil assembly with spark plug and valve cover bolt hole. Push down firmly while twisting slightly to fully seat boot onto spark plug terminal. Coil should sit flush against valve cover surface.

    Install coil retaining bolt
    Thread coil bolt by hand to prevent cross-threading, then torque to specification using torque wrench. Ensure coil remains fully seated during bolt installation.

    Reconnect electrical connector
    Push electrical connector onto coil terminal until locking tab clicks into place. Tug gently on connector to verify secure connection. Ensure connector is fully seated and locked.

    Reinstall engine cover
    Align engine cover grommets with posts on engine and press down firmly until cover seats completely. Verify cover is secure on all mounting points.

Reassembly

  1. Reconnect negative battery cable
  2. If multiple coils were replaced, verify all electrical connections are secure and all bolts are torqued
  3. Double-check that no tools or parts were left in engine compartment

Verification

  • Start engine and listen for smooth idle with no misfires or rough running
  • Allow engine to reach operating temperature and verify no check engine light illumination
  • Use scan tool to check for pending or active misfire codes (P0300-P0308)
  • Perform test drive under various load conditions to confirm repair resolved any driveability concerns
  • Visually inspect coil area for any oil leaks around valve cover after test drive
