This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the engine cooling fan assembly on the 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L V8 EcoTec3 L83 engine.

Warnings

⚠️Never work on cooling system with engine hot. Allow minimum 2 hours cool-down to prevent severe burns from pressurized coolant.
Fan clutch threads are reverse-threaded (left-hand thread). Turn clockwise to loosen, counterclockwise to tighten.
Fan blades can be damaged easily. Do not place assembly face-down or apply pressure to blades.

Fluids

  • ACDelco DEX-COOL (Orange) — 1 qt

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is completely cool to the touch
  2. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
  3. Disconnect negative battery cable to prevent fan motor activation
  4. Place drain pan under radiator if partial coolant drain is needed for clearance

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove air intake assembly
Loosen clamp at throttle body using 10mm socket. Disconnect mass airflow sensor electrical connector by pressing release tab. Remove entire air intake tube and air filter housing assembly to provide access to fan shroud. Set aside in clean area.
  2. 2
    Disconnect fan electrical connector
Locate the electric cooling fan motor connector on the driver side of the fan shroud. Press the release tab and disconnect the electrical connector. Unclip the wiring harness from any retaining clips on the shroud.
  3. 3
Remove upper radiator hose if needed
If clearance is limited, use pliers to reposition the upper radiator hose clamp at the radiator connection. Carefully twist and pull the hose off the radiator neck. Some coolant loss is normal - catch in drain pan.
Even when cool, residual coolant will drain from hose. Keep drain pan positioned.
    Torque spec
    Hose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Remove fan shroud mounting bolts
Locate the two upper fan shroud mounting bolts at the top of the radiator support. Use 10mm socket to remove both bolts completely. The lower shroud tabs sit in radiator clips and require no fastener removal.
  5. 5
    Remove mechanical fan clutch assembly
Using the 36mm fan clutch wrench on the fan clutch nut and holding tool on the water pump pulley to prevent rotation, turn the fan clutch wrench CLOCKWISE to loosen (reverse thread). Once loose, spin off by hand. Carefully lift the fan and clutch assembly away from the engine.
Fan clutch uses LEFT-HAND (reverse) threads. Clockwise loosens, counterclockwise tightens.
  6. 6
Remove electric cooling fan from shroud
With fan shroud tilted up and toward engine, lift the entire fan shroud assembly up and out of the engine bay. Place on clean work surface. Remove the fan mounting bolts (typically four 10mm bolts) securing the electric fan motor to the shroud.
    Torque spec
    Fan Bolts14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
  7. 7
Install new electric cooling fan to shroud
Position the new or cleaned electric cooling fan motor onto the fan shroud, aligning all mounting holes. Install all fan mounting bolts finger-tight, then torque in a cross pattern to specification to ensure even mounting pressure.
    Torque spec
    Fan Bolts14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
  8. 8
    Install fan shroud assembly
Carefully lower the fan shroud assembly into position, ensuring the lower tabs engage with the radiator support clips. Tilt the top of the shroud toward the radiator and align the upper mounting holes with the radiator support.
  9. 9
    Reinstall mechanical fan clutch
Thread the mechanical fan clutch onto the water pump shaft by hand, turning COUNTERCLOCKWISE (reverse thread). Once hand-tight, use the fan clutch wrench and holding tool to tighten securely. Do not overtighten as this can damage the water pump bearing.
Remember reverse thread orientation. Counterclockwise tightens the fan clutch.
  10. 10
Secure fan shroud and reconnect components
Install the two upper fan shroud mounting bolts and tighten securely with 10mm socket. Reconnect the electric fan motor electrical connector until it clicks. Secure wiring harness to shroud clips. If removed, reinstall upper radiator hose and position clamp properly.
    Torque spec
    Hose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Reinstall air intake assembly
Position air intake housing and tube back into place. Reconnect mass airflow sensor electrical connector. Tighten throttle body clamp securely with 10mm socket. Ensure all connections are secure and no hoses are kinked.
  12. 12
    Refill coolant and check level
If coolant was drained, refill cooling system with ACDelco DEX-COOL orange coolant through radiator neck or overflow reservoir to proper level. Reconnect negative battery cable. Start engine and check for leaks around hose connections.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
  2. Confirm fan shroud is properly seated in lower clips and upper bolts are tight
  3. Check that mechanical fan spins freely without contacting shroud or radiator
  4. Ensure coolant level is between MIN and MAX marks on overflow reservoir when cool

Verification

  • Start engine and verify mechanical fan clutch engages and spins smoothly without noise or vibration
  • Allow engine to reach operating temperature and verify electric cooling fan activates automatically
  • Check for coolant leaks around any disturbed hose connections
  • Verify no unusual noises from fan assembly during operation
  • Confirm air conditioning operation triggers electric fan activation
