Preparation

    Verify new freeze plug matches original size and type (cup-type or expansion type most common on L83). Apply thin, even bead of high-tack gasket sealant around the outer edge and sealing surface of the new freeze plug as specified. Do not over-apply sealant as excess can enter coolant passages.

    Install new freeze plug
    Position freeze plug squarely in bore opening with sealant side against block. Using freeze plug installation tool or appropriately sized socket that contacts only the outer rim of the plug (never the center), drive plug evenly into bore using ball peen hammer. Drive plug in until outer edge is 1-2mm below the chamfered edge of the bore, or until it seats against the machined stop inside the bore. Tap evenly around perimeter to ensure square installation. For expansion-type plugs, tighten center bolt to specification to expand plug against bore walls.
    Driving freeze plug too deep can cause it to fall into the water jacket. Use properly sized installation tool that contacts only the rim.

    Verify freeze plug installation

    Close radiator petcock. Reinstall any hoses that were removed. Fill cooling system with ACDelco DEX-COOL orange coolant. Pour coolant slowly into radiator or coolant surge tank until full. On L83 engines, air bleeds automatically through surge tank as engine warms.
