Warnings
⚠️The harmonic balancer bolt is extremely tight (133 lb-ft). Use proper tools to prevent injury.
⚠Never use a jaw-type puller on the harmonic balancer as this will damage the outer ring. Always use a hub-type puller.
⚠The harmonic balancer bolt is typically torque-to-yield (TTY) and must be replaced with a new bolt. Reusing old TTY bolts can result in bolt failure and catastrophic engine damage.

Preparation

Procedure

- 5Remove harmonic balancer using pullerInstall a harmonic balancer puller tool onto the balancer hub (inner portion only). Ensure the puller jaws engage the back of the balancer hub, NOT the outer ring. Thread the puller center bolt into the crankshaft threads or against the crankshaft snout. Tighten the puller bolt gradually and evenly to draw the balancer off the crankshaft. The balancer should come free with steady pressure. Remove puller and balancer together.⚠️Never attach puller jaws to the outer inertia ring of the harmonic balancer. This will destroy the balancer and may cause sudden failure.
- 6Inspect crankshaft snout and keywayClean the crankshaft snout thoroughly with a wire brush and degreaser. Inspect for damage, scoring, or burrs. Check the crankshaft keyway for damage or wear. Inspect the woodruff key (if equipped) and ensure it is properly seated in the crankshaft keyway. Clean any oil or debris from the snout surface.
- 7Prepare new harmonic balancerInspect the new harmonic balancer for shipping damage. Clean the inner bore of the balancer with a clean rag. Verify the keyway slot in the balancer aligns with the orientation needed for installation. Do not apply oil or lubricant to the crankshaft snout or balancer bore unless specifically required by the balancer manufacturer.
- 8Install harmonic balancerAlign the keyway slot in the harmonic balancer with the woodruff key in the crankshaft. Using a harmonic balancer installation tool (threaded installer with appropriate size adapter), thread the tool into the crankshaft center bolt threads. Place the balancer onto the crankshaft snout and thread the installer through the balancer center hole. Tighten the installer tool gradually to draw the balancer onto the crankshaft until it is fully seated against the crankshaft timing gear or stop. Do not use a hammer to drive the balancer on.⚠Never hammer or impact the harmonic balancer onto the crankshaft. This will damage the internal rubber isolation and ruin the balancer.
- 9Install new harmonic balancer boltApply a small amount of clean engine oil to the threads and underside of the bolt head of the NEW harmonic balancer bolt. Insert the bolt through the washer (if equipped) and thread into the crankshaft by hand. Secure the crankshaft from rotation using the same method as removal. Using a torque wrench, tighten the harmonic balancer bolt to 180 Nm (133 lb-ft). An impact wrench may be used but verify final torque with a torque wrench.
