This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the headlight assembly on a 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, including disconnection of electrical connectors and adjustment of the new assembly.

Warnings

Do not touch halogen or HID bulbs with bare hands. Skin oils can cause premature bulb failure or hot spots.
ℹ️If replacing only one headlight, color and brightness may not match the aged opposite side. Consider replacing both for uniform appearance.
Ensure engine is cool before beginning work to prevent burns from radiator or exhaust components.

Parts

  • Headlight assembly (driver or passenger side as needed) × 1 — Use OEM specification or quality aftermarket
  • Plastic push pin retainers (if damaged) × 2 — GM 11589292 or equivalent

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition off and remove key
  3. Allow engine to cool completely if recently operated
  4. Open hood and secure with prop rod

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect battery negative terminal
Using a 10mm socket, loosen and remove the negative battery terminal from the battery. Isolate the cable away from the battery post to prevent accidental reconnection during the repair.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Remove grille push pins
Locate the two plastic push pin retainers securing the top of the grille near the headlight assembly. Use a trim panel removal tool or flat screwdriver to gently pry the center pin upward, then remove the entire retainer. This provides access to the upper headlight mounting bolts.
  3. 3
    Access headlight mounting bolts
Locate the two headlight assembly mounting bolts accessible from the top of the assembly. On this generation Silverado, there are typically two 10mm bolts securing the top of the headlight housing to the radiator support bracket.
  4. 4
    Remove upper mounting bolts
Using a 10mm socket with extension, remove the two upper headlight assembly mounting bolts. Keep these bolts in a safe location for reinstallation.
  5. 5
Locate and remove side mounting bolt
From the wheel well side or front corner of the headlight assembly, locate the side mounting bolt (typically 10mm). This bolt secures the outboard edge of the headlight assembly. Remove this bolt completely.
    Torque spec
    Headlight Assembly Bolts10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Disconnect electrical connectors
Reach behind the headlight assembly and locate the electrical connectors for the low beam, high beam, and turn signal/parking light. Press the release tab on each connector and pull straight back to disconnect. There may be 2-3 connectors depending on bulb configuration. If equipped with daytime running lights, disconnect that connector as well.
Do not pull on wires. Always grasp the connector body and use the release tab to avoid damaging the wiring harness.
  7. 7
    Remove headlight assembly
With all bolts and connectors removed, carefully pull the headlight assembly forward and away from the vehicle. The assembly may require slight wiggling to clear the alignment pins and tabs. Guide it out carefully to avoid scratching adjacent body panels.
  8. 8
    Transfer bulbs if reusing
If the new headlight assembly does not include bulbs, remove the bulbs from the old assembly by rotating the bulb sockets counterclockwise and pulling them out. Install them into the new assembly by inserting and rotating clockwise until they lock in place. Avoid touching the glass portion of any bulbs.
  9. 9
    Install new headlight assembly
Position the new headlight assembly into the mounting location, aligning the locating pins and tabs with their corresponding holes in the radiator support and fender. Push the assembly rearward until it seats flush against the mounting surface.
  10. 10
    Install mounting bolts
Install the side mounting bolt and the two upper mounting bolts finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Once all bolts are started, torque all headlight assembly mounting bolts to specification using a torque wrench in a cross pattern to ensure even seating.
    Torque spec
    Headlight Assembly Bolts10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Reconnect electrical connectors
Reconnect all electrical connectors to the headlight assembly by pushing them firmly into their sockets until you hear or feel a click. Gently tug on each connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
  12. 12
    Reinstall grille retainers
Reinstall the plastic push pin retainers removed from the grille area. Insert the retainer body into the hole, then press the center pin down until it is flush with the retainer body, securing the grille.
  13. 13
    Reconnect battery
Reconnect the negative battery terminal to the battery post and torque the terminal bolt to specification.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
  2. Ensure all mounting bolts are torqued to specification
  3. Check that headlight assembly is flush with surrounding body panels and properly aligned

Verification

  • Turn on headlights and verify both low beam and high beam function properly
  • Activate turn signals and verify front turn signal/parking lights illuminate
  • If equipped, verify daytime running lights function correctly
  • Visually inspect headlight alignment - if beam pattern appears significantly off, perform headlight aim adjustment using the adjuster screws on the headlight assembly
  • Check for any gaps between the headlight assembly and body panels
  • Verify all grille components are properly secured
