Replace a single headlight bulb on the 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with 5.3L V8 engine by accessing the bulb assembly from the engine bay.
Warnings
⚠Allow headlights to cool for at least 10 minutes before beginning work to avoid burns from hot bulbs.
⚠Never touch the glass portion of a halogen bulb with bare skin - oils from fingers will cause premature bulb failure and hot spots.
ℹ️Low beam uses H11 bulb, high beam uses 9005 bulb - verify which bulb needs replacement before starting.
Tools required
Work gloves (clean, lint-free)Essential
Flashlight or work light
Torque wrench (5-50 Nm range)
Parts
- H11 halogen headlight bulb (low beam) or 9005 (high beam) × 1 — Use OEM specification - verify bulb type before purchase
Preparation
- Turn off headlights and ignition, remove key from vehicle
- Allow headlight assembly to cool if vehicle was recently operated
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Identify which bulb needs replacement (low beam or high beam) from front of vehicle
- Put on clean, lint-free work gloves to handle new bulb
Procedure
- 1Locate bulb access coverFrom the engine bay, locate the circular plastic access cover on the back of the headlight assembly. The low beam bulb is typically positioned on the outboard side, while the high beam is more toward the center of the vehicle. The cover will be approximately 4-5 inches in diameter.
- 2Remove bulb access coverRotate the access cover counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn until it releases. Pull the cover straight back and away from the headlight assembly. Set the cover aside in a clean location.
- 3Disconnect electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector attached to the base of the bulb. Press the release tab on the connector and pull it straight off the bulb base. You may need to wiggle it gently while pulling. Do not pull on the wiring harness itself.
- 4Remove bulb retaining clipIdentify the wire retaining clip that holds the bulb in place. Press the wire clip toward the bulb and unhook it from the retaining bracket. Swing the clip out of the way to allow bulb removal. The clip will remain attached to the housing.
- 5Extract old bulbCarefully pull the old bulb straight out of the socket. Avoid twisting or rocking the bulb excessively. Inspect the bulb socket for any corrosion, moisture, or damage. If moisture is present, dry thoroughly before installing new bulb.
- 6Install new bulbRemove the new bulb from its packaging using clean gloves. Handle only by the plastic base, never touching the glass. Insert the new bulb straight into the socket, ensuring the tabs on the bulb base align with the slots in the housing. Push firmly until the bulb is fully seated.
- 7Secure retaining clipSwing the wire retaining clip back over the bulb base. Hook the clip into the retaining bracket and ensure it clicks into place, firmly securing the bulb. Verify the bulb cannot be pulled out with gentle hand pressure.
- 8Reconnect electrical connectorPush the electrical connector straight onto the bulb base until you hear or feel a click. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked in place.
- 9Reinstall access coverPosition the access cover over the opening in the headlight assembly. Align the tabs and rotate clockwise approximately 1/4 turn until it locks into place. Ensure the cover is fully seated against the housing.
Reassembly
- Verify access cover is properly seated and secured
- Close hood completely
Verification
- Start the vehicle and turn on the headlights to verify the new bulb illuminates properly
- Test both low beam and high beam functions to confirm correct operation
- Turn off headlights, exit vehicle, and visually inspect from the front to verify proper light output and beam pattern
- Check that no warning lights are illuminated on the instrument cluster
