Warnings

Preparation

Drain cooling system
Place drain pan under radiator. Locate drain petcock on driver side lower radiator tank. Open petcock and drain coolant into container. Once drained, close petcock hand-tight to specified torque. Remove radiator cap to ensure complete drainage.

Disconnect heater hoses at firewall
Locate the two heater hoses at the firewall on passenger side of engine bay. Use hose clamp pliers to reposition clamps away from connections. Twist hoses gently to break seal, then pull off heater core inlet and outlet tubes. Expect residual coolant drainage. Plug hoses with clean rags to prevent further leakage.

Remove lower dashboard panels
Remove lower driver side knee bolster by removing four screws along bottom edge. Remove lower passenger side panel by releasing clip tabs and removing two screws. Disconnect any electrical connectors for courtesy lights. Remove center console if equipped by removing four bolts under rubber mat in cup holder area and two bolts at rear of console.

Remove instrument cluster and steering column covers
Tilt steering wheel to lowest position. Remove upper and lower steering column covers by releasing tabs and removing two screws each. Pull instrument cluster trim bezel forward to release clips. Remove four screws securing instrument cluster, pull cluster forward, disconnect three electrical connectors on back, and remove cluster from vehicle.

Disconnect main dashboard electrical connectors
Working from driver side, locate and disconnect main body control module harness connector behind left side of dashboard. Disconnect HVAC control head connectors and antenna lead. On passenger side, disconnect airbag connector (yellow), glove box light, and any auxiliary connectors. Label each connector with tape indicating its location.
⚠Airbag connectors are yellow - handle with care and do not apply force to locking tabs.

Remove upper dashboard retaining bolts
Locate five dashboard mounting bolts along top edge of dashboard near windshield. Remove two bolts on driver side near A-pillar, two bolts on passenger side near A-pillar, and one center bolt. These bolts secure dashboard to cowl structure. Do not remove dashboard yet - additional fasteners remain.

Remove dashboard side bolts and center support
Remove one bolt each at driver and passenger side end caps where dashboard meets door jamb. Remove center support bracket bolt under center of dashboard above transmission tunnel. Dashboard should now be secured only by clips along bottom edge and HVAC housing connections.

Separate dashboard from HVAC housing
Working from passenger side, locate where dashboard attaches to HVAC housing. Remove four screws securing dashboard to housing. Carefully pull dashboard rearward approximately 6 inches. Have assistant support dashboard weight. Dashboard will remain in vehicle but must be moved back to access HVAC housing.
⚠Dashboard is heavy and awkward - use assistant to prevent damage to remaining electrical connections or dashboard structure.

Access and remove HVAC housing cover
With dashboard pulled back, locate HVAC housing on passenger side. Remove the evaporator/heater core access cover by removing six cover screws around perimeter. Carefully lift cover away, noting seal position. The heater core is now visible on right side of housing.

Remove heater core mounting and extract core
Remove two bolts securing heater core mounting bracket to HVAC housing. Carefully slide heater core rearward out of housing, keeping it level to prevent bending tubes. Note orientation of inlet/outlet tubes for installation reference. Expect small amount of residual coolant to drain - have towels ready.
⚠Heater core tubes are fragile - do not bend or twist during removal as this will cause leaks.

Install new heater core
Verify new heater core matches old unit exactly in tube orientation and mounting holes. Install new seal on heater core if provided. Carefully slide new heater core into HVAC housing in same orientation as removed, ensuring tubes align properly with firewall openings. Install mounting bracket and torque mounting bolts to specification.

Reinstall HVAC housing cover
Position housing seal properly around cover perimeter. Install cover onto HVAC housing and install six cover screws. Torque screws in star pattern to ensure even seal compression.

Reinstall dashboard assembly
Guide dashboard forward onto HVAC housing, ensuring no wires are pinched. Align dashboard mounting points with cowl and side brackets. Install four dashboard-to-HVAC housing screws and torque to specification. Install center support bracket bolt, side end cap bolts, and five upper mounting bolts along windshield cowl. Torque all mounting bolts to specification.

Reconnect electrical and reinstall trim
Working systematically from labels made during disassembly, reconnect all electrical connectors including body control module, HVAC controls, airbag connector, and accessory connectors. Reinstall instrument cluster and connect three rear connectors. Install cluster trim bezel. Reinstall steering column covers. Install lower dashboard panels and console. Verify all clips and fasteners are secure.

Reconnect heater hoses and refill coolant
In engine bay, clean heater core tubes at firewall and apply thin film of coolant to tube ends. Slide heater hoses onto tubes fully and position new clamps 1/4 inch from tube ends. Tighten clamps to specification - do not overtighten. Verify radiator drain petcock is closed. Fill cooling system with DEX-COOL through radiator neck and overflow reservoir to COLD mark. Reconnect negative battery cable.

Reassembly

Ensure all dashboard panels snap into place completely with no gaps or misalignment
Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated - push until you hear/feel click
Double-check that all five upper dashboard bolts and two side bolts are installed and torqued
Confirm HVAC controls operate smoothly before completing coolant fill procedure

Verification

Start engine and allow to reach operating temperature with heater on maximum temperature and fan speed
Monitor coolant level and add as needed during warm-up - system will require burping to remove air
Verify hot air flows from all dashboard vents with no coolant smell
Check for coolant leaks at firewall heater hose connections and under dashboard on passenger side carpet
