This procedure covers the removal and replacement of a failed HID ballast on the 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with factory HID headlights.
Warnings
⚠️HID systems operate at very high voltage (up to 25,000V on startup). Always disconnect battery before working on HID components to prevent serious shock hazard.
⚠Do not touch the HID bulb glass with bare hands. Oil from skin can cause premature bulb failure or rupture when heated.
ℹ️This procedure assumes the driver or passenger side ballast is being replaced. Both sides follow the same procedure.

Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn off ignition and remove key
- Allow HID system to cool for at least 10 minutes if recently operated
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes for system discharge
Procedure
- 1Access the headlight assemblyFrom inside the engine bay, locate the headlight assembly on the affected side. You may need to remove the air intake duct on the driver side for better access. The HID ballast is typically mounted to the back of the headlight housing or on a bracket nearby.
- 2Locate the HID ballastIdentify the HID ballast module. It is a rectangular metal or plastic box approximately 4x3 inches, mounted either directly to the headlight assembly or on a nearby bracket. It will have two electrical connectors: one from the vehicle harness and one going to the HID bulb igniter.
- 3Disconnect ballast electrical connectorsPress the release tab on the vehicle wiring harness connector and carefully pull it straight off the ballast. Then disconnect the high-voltage output connector going to the HID bulb igniter by releasing its locking tab. Note the routing of both connectors for reinstallation.⚠Even with battery disconnected, residual charge may be present. Do not touch connector pins.
- 4Remove ballast mounting fastenersRemove the mounting bolts or screws securing the ballast to the headlight housing or bracket. Most ballasts are secured with two or three bolts. On this vehicle, the ballast typically uses either 10mm bolts or Phillips screws depending on the specific installation.
- 5Remove failed ballastCarefully remove the ballast from its mounting location. If there is a ground wire attached to the ballast body or mounting bracket, remove the ground bolt and note its location. Inspect the mounting area for any corrosion or damage.Torque specGround Bolt17 Nm (13 lb-ft)
- 6Prepare new ballast for installationUnpack the new ballast and verify it matches the failed unit. Transfer any mounting brackets or hardware from the old ballast if they are not included with the new unit. Apply a thin coat of dielectric grease to all connector pins on the new ballast to prevent corrosion.
- 7Install new ballastPosition the new ballast in the mounting location, ensuring any ground wire terminal is properly positioned. If a ground connection is present, install the ground bolt and torque to specification, ensuring the contact surface is clean and free of paint or corrosion.Torque specGround Bolt17 Nm (13 lb-ft)
- 8Install ballast mounting fastenersInstall the ballast mounting bolts or screws. If using module mounting bolts (typically for ballasts mounted to metal brackets), torque to specification. Hand-tighten screws if mounted directly to plastic headlight housing to avoid cracking.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect electrical connectorsConnect the high-voltage output connector to the HID bulb igniter first, ensuring it clicks into place. Then connect the vehicle wiring harness connector to the ballast input, verifying it is fully seated and locked.
- 10Reinstall air intake if removedIf the air intake duct was removed for access, reinstall it now and secure any clamps or fasteners.
- 11Reconnect batteryReconnect the negative battery terminal and torque the battery terminal bolt to specification. Do not overtighten as this can damage the battery post.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify no tools or parts are left in the engine bay
- Close hood securely
Verification
- Start the vehicle and turn on the headlights
- Verify the affected HID headlight illuminates within 5-10 seconds (normal warm-up time for HID systems)
- Check that the light color matches the opposite side (both should be the same color temperature)
- Turn lights off and on several times to confirm consistent operation
- Inspect for any error messages on the instrument cluster
- Test high and low beam operation to ensure full functionality
