Horn

This procedure covers the diagnosis, removal, and replacement of the horn assembly on a 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L V8 engine.

• Horn assembly × 1 — AC Delco 19303451 or equivalent
• Dielectric grease × 1 — Use as needed

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
2. Turn ignition off and remove key
3. Open hood and support with prop rod
4. Disconnect negative battery cable to prevent accidental horn activation during service

Procedure

   Disconnect battery negative terminal
   Using a 10mm socket, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt. Remove the cable from the battery post and position it away from the battery to prevent accidental contact.
   Torque spec

   Battery Terminal Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)

   Access horn location
   The horn is mounted behind the front bumper on the driver side frame rail. From underneath the front of the vehicle, locate the horn assembly near the fog light area. It will be a round or disc-shaped component with an electrical connector and single mounting bolt.

   Test existing horn (optional diagnostic step)
   If diagnosing horn failure, use a multimeter to check for 12V power at the horn connector when an assistant presses the horn button. If power is present but horn doesn't sound, horn replacement is needed. If no power, diagnose wiring or horn relay/fuse.

   Disconnect horn electrical connector
   Press the tab on the horn electrical connector and pull it straight off the horn terminal. Inspect connector terminals for corrosion or damage. Clean if necessary with electrical contact cleaner.

   Remove horn mounting bolt
   Using a 10mm socket, remove the single bolt securing the horn to the frame bracket. The horn may be mounted with a ground strap or directly to the bracket. Note the orientation and position of any ground connections.
   Torque spec

   Horn Mounting Bolt15 Nm (11 lb-ft)

   Remove horn assembly
   Pull the horn assembly away from the mounting bracket. If a separate ground strap is present, note its position for reinstallation. Inspect the mounting bracket for corrosion or damage.

   Prepare mounting surfaces
   Clean the horn mounting bracket contact surface with a wire brush to ensure good electrical ground. If a separate ground strap is used, clean both contact surfaces on the strap. Apply a thin coat of dielectric grease to the horn electrical connector.

   Install new horn assembly
   Position the new horn onto the mounting bracket in the same orientation as the original. If a ground strap is present, ensure it is properly positioned between the horn and bracket. Thread the mounting bolt through the horn and into the bracket.

   Torque horn mounting bolt
   Using a torque wrench and 10mm socket, tighten the horn mounting bolt to specification. Ensure the horn is secure and properly grounded to the frame bracket.

    Connect horn electrical connector
    Push the electrical connector firmly onto the horn terminal until it clicks into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.

    Reconnect battery negative terminal
    Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post. Using a 10mm socket and torque wrench, tighten the terminal bolt to specification.
    Torque spec

    Battery Terminal Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)

Reassembly

1. Ensure all electrical connections are secure and properly seated
2. Verify horn mounting bolt is torqued to specification and horn is firmly mounted
3. Reset power window auto-up/down function if necessary per owner's manual procedure

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON position (engine does not need to be running)
• Press the horn button on the steering wheel - horn should sound immediately with full volume
• Test horn multiple times with short and long presses to verify consistent operation
• Verify no warning lights are illuminated on the instrument cluster
• Visually inspect under vehicle to confirm horn is securely mounted and no wires are hanging loose
