Preparation

    Remove pistons and connecting rods
    Rotate engine on stand to access connecting rod caps from below. Mark each connecting rod cap and rod with cylinder number using permanent marker (1-8, front to rear). Check for existing marks before marking. Remove connecting rod cap bolts and carefully remove caps, keeping them with their respective rods. Push pistons up and out of cylinders from below, being careful not to damage crankshaft journals. Store each piston and rod assembly with its cap in numbered order.

    Install and verify bearing clearances
    Install upper main bearing shells (with oil holes) into block saddles, ensuring bearing tabs engage notches properly. Do not use any lubricant yet. Install lower bearing shells into main caps, verifying correct orientation. Place Plastigauge strips across each crankshaft main journal parallel to crankshaft centerline. Carefully lower crankshaft into block without rotating. Install main bearing caps in correct orientation and numbered sequence. Install NEW TTY main cap bolts finger-tight, then torque in specified sequence to 55 ft-lb. Do NOT apply angle torque at this stage. Remove caps carefully without rotating crankshaft and measure Plastigauge width using gauge card. Clearance should be 0.0008-0.0021 inches.     Final main bearing installation
    Remove all Plastigauge material completely from journals and bearings using clean cloth. Clean journals and bearings again with brake cleaner and allow to dry. Apply thin coat of assembly lube or clean engine oil to upper bearing shells and install into block saddles. Apply oil to lower bearing shells and install into main caps. Coat all crankshaft main journals with assembly lube. Carefully lower crankshaft into block, seating it fully in all bearing saddles. Install thrust bearing halves on center main bearing (number 3) with grooved side facing crankshaft thrust surfaces. Verify crankshaft rotates freely by hand before installing caps.
