Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. Disconnect negative battery cable to prevent accidental starting
  4. Raise and safely support front of vehicle on jack stands
  5. Allow transmission to cool if vehicle was recently operated
  6. Locate the Neutral Safety Switch on the driver's side of the transmission, near the shift linkage

    Using a 10mm socket, remove the two mounting bolts securing the Neutral Safety Switch to the transmission case. Keep these bolts as they will be reused if in good condition. Support the switch with one hand while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling.

    Remove the old switch
    Carefully pull the Neutral Safety Switch straight out from the transmission case. Transmission fluid will drain from the opening. Allow fluid to drain completely into the pan. Remove and discard the old O-ring seal from the switch bore in the transmission case.

    Clean the mounting surface
    Using shop towels, clean the switch mounting surface on the transmission case. Remove any old gasket material, debris, or metal particles. Inspect the manual shift shaft inside the bore for damage or excessive wear. The shaft should rotate smoothly without binding.

    Prepare the new switch
    Remove the new Neutral Safety Switch from packaging and verify it includes a new O-ring seal. Install the new O-ring onto the switch body, ensuring it is properly seated in the groove. Lightly lubricate the O-ring with clean Dexron VI ATF to aid installation.

    Install the new switch
    Align the new Neutral Safety Switch with the manual shift shaft, ensuring the internal detent matches the shaft position. The switch will only install in one orientation. Push the switch straight into the transmission case until it seats flush against the mounting surface. Do not force or twist the switch during installation.

    Install the two switch mounting bolts and thread them in by hand to prevent cross-threading. Using a torque wrench, tighten the bolts to specification in a cross pattern to ensure even seating of the switch.

    Reconnect electrical connector
    Push the electrical connector straight onto the new Neutral Safety Switch until you hear or feel a positive click. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully locked in place. Ensure no wires are pinched or damaged.

    Check transmission fluid level
    Lower the vehicle to the ground. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. With the engine running and parking brake applied, shift through all gear positions, pausing 2-3 seconds in each position. Return to Park. Check transmission fluid level using the dipstick or fill plug (depending on transmission configuration) and add ACDelco Dexron VI ATF as needed to bring level to the proper range.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure electrical connector is fully seated and locked onto the new switch
  2. Verify all mounting bolts are torqued to specification
  3. Check for transmission fluid leaks around the switch after installation
  4. Confirm transmission fluid level is correct after test drive

Verification

  • With engine off and parking brake applied, verify the vehicle will only start in Park and Neutral positions
  • Verify the vehicle will NOT start when shifted into Reverse, Drive, or any other forward/reverse gear
  • Check that backup lights illuminate when shifted into Reverse
