This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the pitman arm on a 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with 5.3L V8, which connects the steering gearbox to the center link of the steering linkage.
Warnings

⚠The pitman arm is under tension from the steering system. Use only a proper pitman arm puller; never use a pickle fork or hammer as this can damage components.

Preparation
- Park vehicle on level, solid surface and apply parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Turn steering wheel to center position and lock ignition (remove key)
- Raise front of vehicle with floor jack and support securely on jack stands under frame rails
- Remove driver side front wheel
- Spray pitman arm taper and nut with penetrating oil and allow to soak for 10-15 minutes
Procedure
- 1Mark pitman arm positionBefore removal, use a paint marker or center punch to mark the relationship between the pitman arm and the steering gearbox sector shaft. This ensures proper alignment during reinstallation and maintains steering wheel center position. Mark both the arm and the shaft in at least two locations.
- 2Access pitman armFrom underneath the vehicle, locate the pitman arm connected to the steering gearbox sector shaft. The arm extends downward from the gearbox on the driver side of the frame. Verify clear access to the pitman arm nut and the connection point to the center link.
- 3Remove pitman arm castellated nutUsing a deep socket and breaker bar, remove the castellated nut securing the pitman arm to the center link. The nut may have a cotter pin that must be removed first by straightening the legs and pulling it out with pliers. Discard the old nut as a new one should be installed.
- 4Separate pitman arm from center linkInstall a pitman arm puller or ball joint separator onto the pitman arm taper where it connects to the center link. Tighten the puller according to manufacturer instructions until the taper releases from the center link. Do not strike the puller or arm with a hammer. Once separated, remove the puller and move the center link aside.⚠Never use a pickle fork or hammer to separate the taper joint as this will damage the center link ball socket and pitman arm.
- 5Remove pitman arm shaft nutLocate the large nut securing the pitman arm to the steering gearbox sector shaft. Using a deep socket and breaker bar, loosen and remove this nut. The sector shaft has splines and the arm may resist turning during removal. If necessary, have an assistant hold the steering wheel to prevent rotation.
- 6Remove pitman arm from sector shaftInstall the pitman arm puller onto the pitman arm where it mounts to the sector shaft. Position the puller to press against the sector shaft while pulling the pitman arm. Tighten the puller slowly and evenly until the arm releases from the splined shaft. Remove the puller and pitman arm from the vehicle.⚠The pitman arm may release suddenly from the shaft. Ensure the puller is properly seated and tightened gradually to maintain control.
- 7Inspect and clean mounting surfacesInspect the sector shaft splines for damage, wear, or corrosion. Use a wire brush to clean the sector shaft splines and threads. Inspect the center link ball socket for excessive play, tears in the boot, or damage. Replace the center link if any damage is found. Clean the mating surface on the new pitman arm.
- 8Install new pitman arm onto sector shaftAlign the new pitman arm with the alignment marks made during disassembly. The arm has a master spline that only allows installation in one position. Slide the pitman arm onto the sector shaft, ensuring proper engagement with the splines. Install the sector shaft nut hand-tight.⚠Ensure alignment marks match exactly to maintain proper steering wheel position and prevent off-center steering.

Reassembly
- Double-check that the pitman arm shaft nut is torqued to 185 Nm (136 lb-ft)

- Start the engine and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while stationary, listening for unusual noises or binding
