Power Steering Pump Pulley

This procedure covers the removal and installation of the power steering pump pulley on a 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L V8 L83 engine.

• Power steering pump pulley × 1 — Use OEM specification
• Power steering fluid reservoir O-ring × 1 — Use OEM specification
• Power steering pressure line O-ring × 1 — Use OEM specification

Fluids

• ACDelco Power Steering Fluid — 1 qt

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
2. Raise and support front of vehicle on jack stands if additional clearance is needed
3. Remove engine cover if equipped by lifting upward on pull tabs
4. Remove serpentine drive belt by rotating tensioner counterclockwise with 3/8" ratchet and sliding belt off pulley
5. Use turkey baster or fluid pump to remove as much power steering fluid as possible from reservoir to minimize spillage

Procedure

   Access the power steering pump
   Locate the power steering pump on the driver's side of the engine. Identify the pulley on the front of the pump. Clean the area around the pump and pulley to prevent debris from entering the system during service.

   Disconnect power steering pressure line
   Place drain pan below the pump. Using a line wrench, loosen and disconnect the high-pressure line fitting from the rear of the pump. Allow fluid to drain into pan. Cap or plug the line end to prevent contamination. Remove and discard the O-ring from the fitting.
   ⚠Power steering fluid will drain from this connection. Ensure drain pan is positioned correctly.

   Pressure Line Fitting42 Nm (31 lb-ft)

   Disconnect reservoir supply hose
   Loosen the hose clamp on the supply hose that connects the reservoir to the pump inlet. Remove the hose from the pump and allow remaining fluid to drain. Plug the hose end to prevent contamination.

   Remove pump mounting bolts
   Remove the three pump mounting bolts securing the power steering pump to the engine bracket. Support the pump while removing the final bolt. Carefully maneuver the pump away from the mounting bracket to provide access to the pulley.

   Remove power steering pump pulley
   Install the power steering pulley puller tool onto the pulley according to the tool manufacturer's instructions. The puller bolt should thread into the center of the pump shaft. Turn the puller bolt clockwise to draw the pulley straight off the pump shaft. Do not use a hammer or pry bar as this will damage the pump bearing.
   ⚠️Incorrect pulley removal can damage the pump shaft, bearing, or internal components. Use only the proper pulley removal tool.

   Inspect pump shaft and pulley
   Inspect the pump shaft for scoring, damage, or debris. Clean the shaft with a lint-free cloth. Inspect the new or replacement pulley bore for burrs or damage. Ensure the pulley keyway (if equipped) aligns with the shaft key.

   Install new power steering pump pulley
   Position the new pulley on the pump shaft, ensuring proper alignment. Install the power steering pulley installer tool. The installer should press against the pulley hub only, not the outer pulley face. Turn the installer bolt to press the pulley onto the shaft until it is fully seated and flush with the end of the shaft. The pulley should be pressed on evenly without wobble.
   ⚠Press only on the pulley hub. Pressing on the outer pulley face will bend or break the pulley.

   Reinstall power steering pump
   Position the pump back into the mounting bracket, aligning the bolt holes. Install the three pump mounting bolts and tighten in a crisscross pattern to ensure even seating. Torque all mounting bolts to specification.

   Reconnect reservoir supply hose
   Install the supply hose onto the pump inlet. Position the hose clamp and tighten securely. Ensure the hose is routed properly without kinks or contact with hot engine components.

    Reconnect power steering pressure line
    Install a new O-ring on the pressure line fitting, lubricating lightly with clean power steering fluid. Thread the pressure line fitting into the pump by hand to avoid cross-threading. Tighten the fitting to specification using a line wrench.

    Reinstall serpentine belt
    Route the serpentine belt around all pulleys according to the belt routing diagram on the fan shroud or engine compartment. Rotate the tensioner counterclockwise and slide the belt onto the tensioner pulley last. Verify the belt is properly seated in all pulley grooves.

    Refill and bleed power steering system
    Fill the power steering reservoir to the COLD MAX mark with ACDelco Power Steering Fluid. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock slowly several times while idling. Check fluid level and add as needed. Continue cycling the steering until no air bubbles appear in the reservoir and the fluid level stabilizes. Check for leaks at all connection points.
    ℹ️Air in the power steering system can cause noise and poor steering assist. Complete bleeding is essential.

Reassembly

1. Reinstall engine cover by aligning grommets and pressing down until seated
2. Lower vehicle from jack stands if raised
3. Verify all tools and drain pans are removed from engine compartment

Verification

• Start engine and verify no power steering fluid leaks at pump connections
• Turn steering wheel lock-to-lock and verify smooth operation with no noise or binding
• Check power steering fluid level with engine at operating temperature and add if necessary
• Test drive vehicle and verify normal power steering assist function
• Recheck fluid level after test drive and inspect for any leaks
