Expert-verified. Personally reviewed and approved by OLP's master technicians (Chris Hackleman — 20+ years each). Always follow the vehicle's factory service information and torque specs.

This procedure covers draining, flushing, and refilling the power steering system on a 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L V8 L83 engine.

Warnings

Power steering fluid is slippery and can damage painted surfaces. Clean any spills immediately.
Do not turn the steering wheel with the engine running and reservoir empty, as this will damage the power steering pump.
ℹ️This procedure is for a basic fluid exchange. If pump or rack replacement is needed, additional steps and torque specifications apply.

Fluids

  • ACDelco Power Steering Fluid — 1 qt

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear tires
  3. Allow engine to cool if recently operated
  4. Raise front of vehicle using floor jack and support with jack stands under frame rails
  5. Turn steering wheel to center position

Procedure

  1. 1
Locate and access power steering reservoir
Open hood and locate the power steering fluid reservoir on the driver's side of the engine bay, mounted near the firewall. The reservoir is a translucent plastic container with a black cap. Clean the area around the reservoir cap to prevent contamination.
  2. 2
    Remove old fluid from reservoir
Remove the reservoir cap by turning counterclockwise. Use a turkey baster or fluid transfer pump to remove as much old fluid as possible from the reservoir. Dispose of old fluid in a suitable container. Note the fluid level markings on the reservoir for later reference.
  3. 3
Drain fluid from system (low-side return line method)
Identify the low-pressure return hose running from the bottom of the reservoir. Place drain pan beneath the connection point. Carefully disconnect the return hose from the reservoir (push tab or release clamp depending on configuration). Allow fluid to drain from both the hose and reservoir. You can also use a suction pump to evacuate the reservoir completely.
Expect approximately 1 quart of fluid to drain. Ensure drain pan is positioned to catch all fluid.
  4. 4
    Flush remaining fluid from system
With the return hose still disconnected and directed into the drain pan, fill the reservoir with fresh ACDelco Power Steering Fluid. Have an assistant briefly start the engine (no more than 2-3 seconds at a time) while you monitor fluid being pumped through the system. Add fresh fluid to the reservoir between starts. Repeat this process until fluid coming from the return hose runs clear and red (not dark brown or black). Do not allow pump to run dry.
⚠️Never run the power steering pump dry. Continuously monitor reservoir level and stop immediately if it becomes empty.
Do not crank engine for more than 2-3 seconds at a time to prevent pump damage. Allow 10-15 seconds between cranks.
  5. 5
    Reconnect return hose
Once fluid runs clear, stop the engine and reconnect the return hose to the reservoir. Ensure the connection is fully seated and secure the clamp or push the tab until it clicks into place. Wipe away any spilled fluid from surrounding components.
  6. 6
    Fill reservoir to proper level
Fill the power steering reservoir to the COLD MAX line with fresh ACDelco Power Steering Fluid. Install the reservoir cap and tighten by hand until snug. The cap should seal completely but does not require excessive force.
  7. 7
    Bleed air from system
With the engine off, turn the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock (full left to full right) approximately 10 times. Check the reservoir level and top off as needed. Start the engine and allow it to idle. Turn the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock 3-4 times while engine is running. Check for smooth operation and listen for any whining or groaning noises that would indicate air in the system.
Do not hold steering wheel at full lock for more than 2-3 seconds to avoid overheating the power steering fluid.
  8. 8
Check for leaks and proper fluid level
With engine running at idle, inspect all power steering connections including reservoir, pressure line fittings, and hoses for leaks. Check fluid level in reservoir with engine running and warm - it should be at or near the HOT MAX line. Add fluid if necessary. Turn off engine and reinstall reservoir cap.
  9. 9
    Lower vehicle and final check
Raise vehicle slightly to remove jack stands, then lower vehicle completely to ground. Start engine and verify power steering operation by turning wheel through full range of motion. Check for normal effort and smooth operation. Recheck fluid level after test drive.
ℹ️Fluid level may drop slightly after initial operation as air purges from the system. This is normal.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all hose connections are secure and properly clamped
  2. Verify reservoir cap is installed and sealed
  3. Clean any spilled power steering fluid from engine bay components
  4. Verify no tools or materials are left in engine compartment

Verification

  • Start engine and verify no unusual noises from power steering pump
  • Turn steering wheel through full range of motion and confirm smooth, consistent effort
  • Check reservoir fluid level is at HOT MAX line with engine warm and running
  • Inspect all connections for leaks with engine running
  • Test drive vehicle and verify normal power steering operation during turns
  • Recheck fluid level after test drive and top off if necessary
