Radio/Head Unit

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the factory radio/head unit in a 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, including disconnecting the battery, removing trim panels, and reconnecting the audio system components.

• Replacement radio/head unit (OEM or aftermarket) × 1 — Use OEM specification or compatible aftermarket unit
• Radio wiring harness adapter (if using aftermarket radio) × 1 — Metra 70-2003 or equivalent

• Dash kit (if using aftermarket radio) × 1 — Metra 95-3305 or equivalent

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
3. Ensure all accessories are turned off
4. Gather all replacement parts and verify compatibility with vehicle
5. If installing aftermarket radio, read manufacturer instructions for any special wiring requirements

Procedure

1. 1

   Disconnect battery negative terminal
   Open the hood and locate the battery in the engine compartment. Using a 10mm socket, loosen the negative (-) battery terminal bolt. Remove the cable from the terminal and secure it away from the battery post to prevent accidental reconnection. Wait at least 2 minutes before proceeding to allow airbag system capacitors to discharge.

   Remove center stack lower trim panel
   Locate the lower trim panel below the radio that covers the climate controls. Using a panel removal tool, carefully pry from the bottom edge and work upward to release the retaining clips. Start at the sides and work toward the center to avoid breaking clips. Pull the panel forward and set aside.
   ⚠The trim clips are fragile. Apply steady, even pressure and do not force the panel if resistance is felt.

   Remove climate control trim bezel
   Grasp the climate control bezel (the panel surrounding the temperature controls and radio) firmly and pull straight back starting from the bottom. The bezel is held by multiple spring clips around the perimeter. Work carefully around all edges until all clips are released. Once loose, pull the bezel forward approximately 2-3 inches.
   ℹ️This panel requires firm but controlled force. The clips will make audible popping sounds as they release.

   Disconnect climate control connectors
   With the bezel pulled forward, reach behind and locate the electrical connectors for the climate control panel and hazard switch. Press the release tabs on each connector and pull straight back to disconnect. There are typically 2-3 connectors depending on options. Completely remove the bezel from the vehicle and set aside in a safe location.
   ⚠Do not pull on wires. Always grasp the connector body and use the release tab mechanism.

   Remove radio mounting bolts
   With the bezel removed, the radio unit is now visible. Locate the four 7mm bolts securing the radio bracket to the instrument panel structure (two on each side of the radio). Using a 7mm socket, remove all four bolts completely. Keep these bolts organized as they will be reused.

   Extract radio from dash cavity
   Carefully pull the radio unit straight out from the dash opening approximately 4-6 inches until you can access the rear connections. Support the weight of the unit with one hand while working on the connectors. The unit is still connected by multiple harnesses and the antenna cable.
   ⚠The radio unit weighs approximately 3-4 lbs. Support it adequately to prevent stress on electrical connectors.

   Disconnect radio electrical connectors
   Locate all electrical connectors on the back of the radio unit. Typically there are 2-3 main harness connectors (gray or black multi-pin connectors). Press the release tab on each connector and pull straight back to disconnect. If equipped with Bose audio system or OnStar, there may be additional connectors. Label connectors if installing an aftermarket unit to aid in wiring harness adapter installation.
   ℹ️Take photos of connector locations before disconnecting to aid in reassembly, especially if installing aftermarket equipment.

   Disconnect antenna cable
   Locate the black coaxial antenna cable connected to the back of the radio unit. Grasp the connector firmly and pull straight back while supporting the radio. The connector should release with moderate force. Do not twist or bend the cable excessively. Completely remove the factory radio from the vehicle.
   ⚠The antenna connector can be tight. Pull firmly on the connector body, not the cable itself, to avoid damaging the coaxial cable.

   Prepare new radio for installation
   If installing a factory replacement radio, proceed directly to installation. If installing an aftermarket radio, attach the wiring harness adapter to the new radio following the adapter manufacturer's instructions. Connect the antenna adapter if required. Install the new radio into the dash kit (if applicable) and ensure all mounting points are secure. Verify all connections are properly seated before proceeding.
   ℹ️For aftermarket installations, some vehicles with factory amplifiers require additional integration modules. Verify all components are included and properly connected.

    Connect antenna and electrical harnesses
    Position the new radio near the dash opening. Connect the antenna cable first by pushing it firmly onto the antenna input until it clicks. Then connect all electrical harnesses, ensuring each connector is fully seated and the locking tabs engage. Verify that no pins are bent and connectors are aligned properly before applying pressure.
    ⚠Forcing misaligned connectors can bend pins and cause permanent damage. Ensure proper alignment before pushing connectors together.

    Test radio functionality before final assembly
    Temporarily reconnect the battery negative terminal (torque to 6.0 Nm/4.0 lb-ft). Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position and verify the new radio powers on, displays properly, and all functions work including AM/FM radio, audio playback, backup camera (if equipped), and steering wheel controls. Test all speakers for proper output. If any functions do not work, turn off ignition, disconnect battery, and verify all connections.
    ℹ️Testing before final assembly prevents the need to disassemble the dash again if connections are incorrect.

    Install radio into dash cavity
    Once functionality is confirmed, turn off all power and disconnect the battery negative terminal again. Carefully guide all wiring harnesses behind the radio as you push the unit back into the dash cavity. Ensure no wires are pinched or kinked. Align the radio mounting holes with the bracket mounting points in the dash structure.
    ⚠Pinched wires can cause short circuits or intermittent operation. Route wiring carefully to avoid interference with radio movement.

    Secure radio mounting bolts
    Install the four 7mm radio mounting bolts through the radio bracket into the instrument panel structure. Start all four bolts by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Using a torque wrench and 7mm socket, tighten all four bolts to 8.0 Nm (6.0 lb-ft) in a cross-pattern to ensure even mounting pressure.

    Reinstall climate control bezel
    Reconnect the climate control and hazard switch electrical connectors by pushing them firmly until the locking tabs click into place. Position the bezel over the radio and climate controls, ensuring proper alignment with the dash opening. Press firmly around all edges until all retaining clips snap into place. Verify the bezel is flush and secure around the entire perimeter.
    ℹ️The bezel should sit flush with the surrounding dash surface. If gaps are present, remove and reinstall to ensure all clips are properly engaged.
15. 15

    Reinstall lower trim panel and reconnect battery
    Position the lower trim panel and press firmly to engage all retaining clips. Verify the panel is secure. Reconnect the battery negative terminal and torque the terminal bolt to 6.0 Nm (4.0 lb-ft). Do not overtighten as this can damage the battery terminal.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all trim panels are flush and properly seated with no gaps
2. Verify all retaining clips are fully engaged by gently pulling on trim edges
3. Check that climate control buttons operate smoothly without binding
4. Confirm battery terminal is tight and corrosion-free

Verification

• Turn ignition to ACC or ON position and verify radio powers on and displays correctly
• Test all audio sources: AM radio, FM radio, SiriusXM (if equipped), Bluetooth, and USB inputs
• Verify all speakers produce sound at various volume levels and balance settings
• Test steering wheel audio controls for proper operation (volume, track skip, source selection)
• If equipped, verify backup camera activates when transmission is shifted to Reverse
• Test OnStar functionality if vehicle is equipped and radio integrates with system
• Confirm clock displays correct time and radio presets can be saved and recalled
• Check that all climate control functions operate normally
• Verify no warning lights or messages appear on instrument cluster related to radio or communication systems
• For aftermarket installations, verify any additional features (navigation, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay) function as expected
