Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and set parking brake
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key

    Never hammer on the steering shaft or use pry bars to remove the steering wheel. This will damage the steering column and clock spring assembly.

    Tighten the steering wheel puller center bolt gradually while supporting the steering wheel. The wheel will release from the splined shaft with a slight pop. Carefully remove the steering wheel from the column, feeding any wiring through the center opening. Keep the clock spring centered and do not rotate it.

    Inspect the steering shaft splines for damage or wear. Check the clock spring to ensure it remains centered (there should be a centering lock or indicator showing it is centered). If installing a new steering wheel, transfer any necessary components and verify all electrical connectors are compatible. Clean the steering shaft splines with a shop towel if needed.
    Do not rotate the clock spring assembly. If it becomes off-center, the airbag system will not function correctly and the clock spring may be damaged when the steering wheel is turned.

    Route any wiring harnesses through the center opening of the steering wheel. Align the steering wheel with the alignment marks made during disassembly and align the splines with the steering shaft. Carefully slide the steering wheel onto the shaft, ensuring proper spline engagement and that the clock spring wiring is not pinched.

Reassembly
