Steering Wheel

This procedure covers removal and installation of the steering wheel on a 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L V8 engine, including airbag module removal and proper torque specifications.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level ground and set parking brake
2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
3. Turn steering wheel to straight-ahead position with wheels pointing straight
4. Open hood and disconnect negative battery cable, then positive battery cable
5. Wait at least 2 minutes for airbag system capacitors to fully discharge
6. Ensure you have the radio anti-theft code if applicable before battery disconnect

Procedure

1. 1

   Mark steering wheel position
   Using a white paint marker or masking tape, mark the steering wheel position relative to the steering shaft. This ensures the steering wheel is reinstalled in the exact same position for proper alignment and spline engagement.

   Remove airbag module access covers
   On both sides of the steering wheel, locate the small access holes or cover plugs behind the wheel spokes. Use a trim tool or small flathead screwdriver to carefully pry out the access hole covers. These provide access to the airbag module retaining bolts.

   Remove airbag module retaining bolts
   Insert a T30 Torx bit through each access hole and remove the airbag module retaining bolts on both sides of the steering wheel. Support the airbag module with one hand as you remove the second bolt to prevent it from falling.
   ⚠Support the airbag module as you remove the final bolt to prevent it from dropping and damaging the connector or module.

   Disconnect airbag and horn connectors
   Carefully pull the airbag module away from the steering wheel. Locate the yellow airbag connector and horn wire connector on the back of the module. Press the locking tabs and disconnect both connectors. The airbag connector is typically yellow with a locking tab that must be pressed while sliding the connector apart.

   Remove and store airbag module
   Remove the airbag module from the steering wheel and place it face-up on a clean, padded surface away from the work area. Never place the airbag face-down. Store in a secure location where it will not be disturbed during the repair.
   ⚠️Always place airbag module face-up on a padded surface. Placing face-down could cause injury if deployment occurs.

   Disconnect steering wheel controls
   Disconnect any remaining electrical connectors for steering wheel controls, including cruise control switches, audio controls, and any other harness connectors. Note the routing and position of wires for reassembly.

   Remove steering wheel retaining nut
   Using the appropriate socket, remove the steering wheel retaining nut from the center of the steering wheel. Do not discard this nut if reusing the steering wheel. Keep track of any washers or spacers under the nut.

   Steering Wheel Nut54 Nm (40 lb-ft)

   Install steering wheel puller
   Thread a GM-compatible steering wheel puller onto the steering wheel hub. The puller must be specifically designed for GM steering wheels to avoid damage. Do not use a generic puller or attempt to pry the wheel off with bars or levers as this will damage the column and cancel the airbag clock spring.
   ⚠Never hammer on the steering shaft or use pry bars to remove the steering wheel. This will damage the steering column and clock spring assembly.

   Remove steering wheel from shaft
   Tighten the steering wheel puller center bolt gradually while supporting the steering wheel. The wheel will release from the splined shaft with a slight pop. Carefully remove the steering wheel from the column, feeding any wiring through the center opening. Keep the clock spring centered and do not rotate it.

    Inspect and prepare for installation
    Inspect the steering shaft splines for damage or wear. Check the clock spring to ensure it remains centered (there should be a centering lock or indicator showing it is centered). If installing a new steering wheel, transfer any necessary components and verify all electrical connectors are compatible. Clean the steering shaft splines with a shop towel if needed.
    ⚠Do not rotate the clock spring assembly. If it becomes off-center, the airbag system will not function correctly and the clock spring may be damaged when the steering wheel is turned.

    Install steering wheel onto shaft
    Route any wiring harnesses through the center opening of the steering wheel. Align the steering wheel with the alignment marks made during disassembly and align the splines with the steering shaft. Carefully slide the steering wheel onto the shaft, ensuring proper spline engagement and that the clock spring wiring is not pinched.

    Install and torque steering wheel nut
    Install the steering wheel retaining nut with any washers or spacers in their original positions. Using a torque wrench, tighten the nut to specification. Verify the steering wheel is properly seated on the shaft before final torquing.

    Reconnect steering wheel controls
    Reconnect all steering wheel electrical connectors including cruise control, audio controls, and any other harness connections. Ensure all connectors are fully seated with locking tabs engaged. Route wiring as noted during disassembly.

    Reconnect airbag and horn connectors
    Connect the horn wire connector and the yellow airbag connector to the back of the airbag module. Ensure both connectors click into place and are fully seated. The yellow airbag connector should have an audible click when properly locked.

    Install airbag module
    Carefully position the airbag module onto the steering wheel, ensuring no wires are pinched. Align the module with the mounting bosses on the steering wheel. Install both T30 Torx retaining bolts and torque to specification. Install the access hole covers on both sides of the steering wheel.

Reassembly

1. Reconnect positive battery cable first, then negative battery cable
2. Turn ignition to ON position without starting the engine and verify the airbag warning light performs its normal self-test (illuminates briefly then extinguishes)
3. Verify all steering wheel controls function properly including horn, cruise control, and audio controls
4. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock to verify proper operation and alignment

Verification

• Confirm airbag warning light extinguishes after 3-7 seconds indicating system is functioning normally
• Test horn operation by pressing the horn button
• Verify all steering wheel mounted controls operate correctly
• Confirm steering wheel is centered when driving straight ahead
• Check for any unusual noises or binding when turning the steering wheel
• Verify no airbag fault codes are present using a scan tool if available
