Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. Loosen front wheel lug nuts while vehicle is on ground
  4. Raise front of vehicle with floor jack at manufacturer-approved lift points
  5. Support vehicle securely on jack stands under frame rails
  6. Remove both front wheels completely
  7. Spray penetrating oil on sway bar link nuts and bracket bolts if corrosion is present

    Locate the sway bar link connecting the sway bar to the lower control arm on the driver side. Insert a 6mm Allen key into the top of the link stud to hold it from spinning. Using an 18mm wrench, remove the upper nut that secures the link to the sway bar. Remove the link from the sway bar.

    Disconnect right sway bar link
    Repeat the same process on the passenger side. Hold the link stud with a 6mm Allen key and remove the upper nut with an 18mm wrench. Separate the link from the sway bar. The links can remain attached to the lower control arms.

    Remove left sway bar bracket
    Locate the sway bar mounting bracket on the driver side frame rail. The bracket is secured by two bolts that pass through the bushing and bracket into the frame. Using a 15mm socket, remove both bracket bolts. Remove the bracket and note the orientation of the bushing split for reassembly.
    ℹ️Sway bar bushings have a split that must face toward the rear of the vehicle during installation.

    Remove right sway bar bracket
    Using a 15mm socket, remove both bolts securing the passenger side sway bar bracket to the frame rail. Remove the bracket and inspect the bushing condition. Keep brackets separated if they differ.

    Remove sway bar from vehicle
    With both brackets removed, maneuver the sway bar downward and toward one side to clear the frame and suspension components. The bar may need to be rotated or angled to pass around the lower control arms and steering linkage. Remove the bar from under the vehicle.
    Sway bar weighs approximately 15-20 pounds. Use caution when removing to prevent dropping on yourself or damaging brake lines.

    Inspect and prepare bushings
    Remove the old bushings from the sway bar if replacing. Clean the mounting surface on the bar with a wire brush. If reusing bushings, inspect for cracks, tears, or excessive wear. Install new or cleaned bushings onto the bar with the split facing rearward. Apply a light coating of silicone grease to the inside of bushings to prevent squeaking.

    Install sway bar into position
    Position the new or serviced sway bar under the vehicle. Maneuver the bar upward into the mounting location, routing it over the lower control arms and steering components. Align the bushings with the mounting holes in the frame rails on both sides. The bar end links should be positioned near the lower control arm mounting points.
    ℹ️Ensure sway bar is centered side-to-side with equal spacing on both ends before securing brackets.

    Install sway bar brackets
    Install the mounting brackets over the bushings on both sides. Verify the bushing splits face rearward. Start all four bracket bolts (two per side) by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Once all bolts are started, torque each bracket bolt to specification using a 15mm socket and torque wrench.

    Connect sway bar links
    Align the upper portion of each sway bar link with the mounting hole in the sway bar end. Install the upper nuts onto the link studs. Insert a 6mm Allen key into the top of each stud to prevent rotation while torquing the nuts to specification with an 18mm wrench and torque wrench. Repeat for both sides.

    Reinstall wheels and lower vehicle
    Install both front wheels and start all lug nuts by hand. Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern snugly but do not torque fully yet. Raise vehicle slightly with floor jack, remove jack stands, and lower vehicle completely to the ground. Torque wheel lug nuts to specification in a star pattern.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all fasteners are torqued to specification before test driving
  2. Verify sway bar links move freely without binding through suspension travel
