Turn Signal Switch

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the turn signal multifunction switch on the steering column of a 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500.

• Turn signal multifunction switch assembly × 1 — ACDelco D6281E or equivalent
• Electrical connector grease (dielectric) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level ground and set parking brake
2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
3. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system discharge
4. Adjust steering column to lowest and most extended position for access
5. Take photos of wiring harness routing around steering column

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove lower steering column cover
   Locate the two Torx T20 screws on the underside of the lower steering column cover. Remove both screws and carefully pull the lower cover downward and away from the column, releasing the retaining clips. Set the cover aside.

   Remove upper steering column cover
   Locate the Torx T20 screws securing the upper steering column cover (typically 2-3 screws depending on trim level). Remove all screws and lift the upper cover upward, disconnecting it from the lower column assembly. Note the position of any wiring clips attached to the cover.

   Disconnect wiper/washer switch connector
   Locate the wiper/washer switch on the right side of the steering column. Press the locking tab on the electrical connector and pull straight out to disconnect. If equipped with connector screws, remove them first.

   Disconnect turn signal/multifunction switch connector
   Locate the main turn signal switch connector on the left side of the steering column. Depress the connector lock tab and carefully pull the connector straight back to disconnect. This is a large multi-pin connector that may require significant force on the release tab.

   Remove turn signal switch mounting screws
   Locate the two Torx T20 screws securing the turn signal multifunction switch to the steering column housing. These screws are located on the left side of the column. Remove both screws completely and retain them for reinstallation.

   Remove turn signal switch assembly
   Grasp the turn signal lever and switch assembly firmly. Pull the assembly straight out from the steering column housing while guiding the wiring harness through the column opening. The switch may require slight wiggling to clear internal clips. Do not force if resistance is felt; verify all fasteners are removed.

   Inspect steering column components
   With the switch removed, inspect the steering column housing bore for damage, debris, or corrosion. Check the wiring harness routing channel for any sharp edges or damage that could cause future wire chafing. Clean any corrosion from connector mounting areas with electrical contact cleaner.

   Install new turn signal switch
   Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the electrical connector terminals on the new switch. Route the wiring harness through the steering column opening and align the switch assembly with the mounting holes. Push the switch into position until it seats flush against the column housing. Ensure the wiring is not pinched or kinked.

   Install switch mounting screws
   Insert both Torx T20 mounting screws and hand-tighten them. Using a torque wrench, tighten the screws to specification in a cross pattern to ensure even seating of the switch assembly.

    Reconnect electrical connectors
    Reconnect the main turn signal switch connector by aligning the connector and pushing firmly until the lock tab clicks into place. Tug gently to verify secure connection. Reconnect the wiper/washer switch connector in the same manner. Ensure all connector locks are fully engaged.

    Reinstall upper steering column cover
    Position the upper steering column cover over the column assembly, ensuring all wiring is routed properly and not pinched. Align the cover with the lower column housing and press down gently to engage the clips. Install the Torx T20 screws and tighten to specification.

    Reinstall lower steering column cover
    Align the lower steering column cover with the upper cover and column assembly. Press the cover upward to engage the retaining clips until you hear them click. Install the two Torx T20 screws on the underside and tighten to specification.

    Reconnect battery and initialize system
    Reconnect the negative battery cable and tighten to specification. Turn the ignition to ON position without starting the engine. The instrument cluster may display warning lights initially as systems reinitialize. Cycle the ignition off and back on if needed.

Reassembly

1. Verify all steering column covers are securely fastened with no gaps or misalignment
2. Ensure no wiring is visible or pinched between cover panels
3. Confirm all electrical connectors are fully seated with locking tabs engaged
4. Check that steering column tilt and telescoping functions operate smoothly without binding

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON position and verify instrument cluster illuminates normally without warning lights related to turn signals or multifunction switch
• Test left and right turn signals with ignition ON - verify green arrow indicators flash in instrument cluster and exterior lights flash at correct rate
• Test hazard light function - verify all four corners flash simultaneously
• Test high beam operation - verify blue indicator illuminates in cluster and headlights switch to high beam
• Test windshield wiper all speeds (INT, LO, HI) and verify proper operation
• Test windshield washer function and verify pump activates and wipers cycle
• Operate cruise control functions if equipped - verify set, resume, and cancel functions work properly
• Check that turn signal lever returns to center position after completing a turn
• Verify lane change tap function works (partial lever movement for three flashes)
• Test drive vehicle to confirm all multifunction switch operations work under normal driving conditions
