Parts
- Front window motor assembly × 1 — ACDelco 88987918 or equivalent OEM
- Door panel retaining clips × 1 — GM 11589292 (if damaged during removal)
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes to allow airbag system capacitors to discharge
- Lower the window approximately 6 inches from fully closed position before disconnecting battery
- Gather all tools and replacement parts before beginning
Procedure
- 1Remove door handle trim and armrestUse Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw behind the door handle pull cup. Remove the armrest pull cup by lifting upward. Locate and remove the two T30 Torx screws in the armrest pocket area. These secure the upper portion of the door panel.
- 2Disconnect power mirror and window switchesCarefully pry up the power window and mirror switch assembly from the armrest using a trim tool. Disconnect the electrical connectors by pressing the release tabs and pulling straight up. Set the switch assembly aside in a safe location.
- 3Remove door panel fastenersRemove the T30 Torx screw located at the bottom corner of the door panel near the door latch. Remove any additional Phillips screws along the bottom edge of the door panel. These typically number 2-3 screws depending on trim level.
- 4Detach and remove door panelStarting at the bottom rear corner, use door panel removal tools to carefully release the retaining clips around the perimeter of the door panel. Work your way around the panel, being careful not to break clips. Once all clips are released, lift the panel upward to disengage it from the window sill, then pull away from door. Disconnect any remaining electrical connectors including door courtesy light.
- 5Remove water shield accessCarefully peel back the plastic water shield membrane only enough to access the window regulator motor mounting bolts. The motor is typically located in the lower front section of the door. Use masking tape to hold the shield back if needed, ensuring it remains intact for reinstallation.
- 6Secure window in raised positionManually raise the window to approximately 3-4 inches from fully closed position. Use masking tape across the top of the glass and onto the door frame to secure the window and prevent it from dropping when the motor is disconnected. Ensure the tape is strong enough to support the window weight.
- 7Disconnect window motor electrical connectorLocate the window motor electrical connector on the motor assembly. Press the connector release tab and pull the connector straight off the motor. Allow the connector to hang freely inside the door cavity.
- 8Remove window motor mounting boltsUsing a 10mm socket, remove the three mounting bolts securing the window motor to the regulator assembly and door frame. Support the motor with one hand while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling inside the door cavity. Note the orientation of the motor for proper installation of the replacement.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 9Extract window motor from doorCarefully maneuver the window motor out through the access hole in the door frame. The motor may need to be tilted or rotated to clear the door structure. Take care not to damage the regulator cables or mechanism during removal.
- 10Install new window motorPosition the new window motor into the door cavity and align it with the regulator assembly mounting points. Ensure the motor gear properly engages with the regulator mechanism. Install the three mounting bolts hand-tight first to verify alignment, then torque to specification in a crossing pattern.⚠Verify motor gear fully engages with regulator before tightening bolts to prevent binding or motor damageTorque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 11Reconnect electrical connectorConnect the electrical connector to the new window motor, ensuring it clicks firmly into place. Verify the connection is secure by gently tugging on the connector.
- 12Test window operationReconnect the negative battery terminal temporarily and test window operation before reassembling the door panel. Remove the tape securing the window. The window should move smoothly up and down through its full range of travel. Listen for any unusual noises or binding. If operation is correct, disconnect the battery again for final reassembly.⚠Do not operate window with door panel removed for extended periods as debris can enter door cavityTorque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 13Reinstall water shield and door panelPress the water shield firmly back into place, ensuring all adhesive areas are properly sealed. Position the door panel by engaging the top edge into the window sill, then press firmly around the perimeter to seat all retaining clips. Reinstall all T30 Torx screws and Phillips screws, reconnect all electrical connectors, and reinstall the switch assembly and trim pieces.
Reassembly
- Reconnect negative battery terminal and torque to specification
- Perform window auto-up/down re-initialization if equipped: with ignition on, fully raise window and hold switch up for 2 seconds, then fully lower window and hold switch down for 2 seconds
- Verify all door panel clips are fully seated and panel is secure with no gaps or rattles
- Test window operation multiple times to confirm smooth travel and proper auto-reverse function if equipped
Verification
- Test window up and down operation from both driver and passenger switches (if equipped)
- Verify window moves smoothly without binding, hesitation, or unusual noise throughout full range of travel
- Confirm window auto-reverse safety feature functions properly if vehicle is equipped
- Check that door panel is secure with no rattles or loose fasteners
- Verify all door panel switches and features function correctly
