Wiper Motor - Front

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the front wiper motor assembly on a 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L V8 engine.

• Front wiper motor assembly × 1 — AC Delco 88958375 or equivalent
• Cowl panel clips (if broken) × 5 — GM 11589292 or equivalent

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Turn ignition off and remove key
3. Mark wiper blade resting positions on windshield with masking tape for reference
4. Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait at least 2 minutes
5. Open hood and secure in upright position

Procedure

   Remove wiper arms
   Lift wiper arm away from windshield. Locate the release tab or nut cover at the base of each wiper arm. Remove the 15mm nut securing each wiper arm to the drive shaft. Mark the orientation, then pull the wiper arms straight off the splined shafts. Some force may be required.

   Remove cowl panel covers
   Remove the plastic cowl vent screen panels that cover the wiper motor area. Remove the retaining screws along the cowl panel (typically 4-6 screws). Use a trim panel removal tool to carefully release the clips securing the cowl panels. Lift the cowl panels up and away from the vehicle. Set aside with hardware.

   Disconnect washer hoses
   Locate the windshield washer fluid hoses connected to the washer nozzles on the cowl. Carefully disconnect the hoses by pressing the release tabs and pulling. Have a shop towel ready to catch any residual washer fluid. Move hoses aside.

   Disconnect wiper motor electrical connector
   Locate the wiper motor electrical connector on the driver side of the wiper motor assembly. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight off the motor. Ensure the connector is moved safely away from the work area.

   Remove wiper transmission linkage assembly
   Remove the mounting bolts securing the wiper transmission linkage assembly to the cowl. There are typically 3-4 bolts securing the assembly. Carefully note the orientation of the linkage and ground strap locations before removal.

   Remove wiper motor from linkage
   With the linkage assembly accessible, locate the bolts securing the wiper motor to the linkage bracket (typically 3 bolts). Remove these bracket bolts and separate the motor from the linkage assembly. Note the orientation of the motor crank arm position for installation reference.

   Bracket Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)

   Install new wiper motor to linkage
   Position the new wiper motor to the linkage bracket, aligning the crank arm to the linkage ball socket. Ensure the motor is oriented correctly with the electrical connector facing the driver side. Install and torque the bracket bolts to specification.

   Install wiper transmission assembly
   Position the wiper transmission and motor assembly into the cowl area. Align the mounting holes and ground strap locations. Clean the ground strap contact surfaces with a wire brush or sandpaper to ensure good electrical contact. Install and torque the mounting bolts and ground strap bolt to specification.
   Torque spec

   Ground Strap Bolt16 Nm (12 lb-ft)

   Reconnect electrical connector
   Reconnect the wiper motor electrical connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place. Verify the locking tab is fully engaged.

    Reconnect washer hoses and install cowl panels
    Reconnect the windshield washer fluid hoses to the nozzles, ensuring they snap into place. Position the cowl vent panels back onto the vehicle, aligning the clips and screw holes. Press firmly to engage clips. Install and torque the cowl panel screws to specification.

    Reinstall wiper arms
    Before installing wiper arms, reconnect the battery negative terminal and torque to specification. Turn the ignition to ON and activate the wipers briefly, then turn OFF when the linkage is in the park position (down position). Disconnect battery again. Install the wiper arms onto the splined shafts in their marked positions. Install and tighten the 15mm retaining nuts. Reconnect battery and torque terminal bolt.
    ℹ️The wiper motor must be in park position before installing wiper arms to ensure proper blade positioning.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
2. Verify washer hoses are properly connected and not kinked
3. Confirm all cowl panel clips are engaged and screws are tightened
4. Check that wiper arms are positioned correctly per original tape marks

Verification

• Reconnect battery negative terminal and ensure proper torque on terminal bolt
• Turn ignition to ON position
• Test wiper operation in all speeds (intermittent, low, high) and verify smooth operation without binding or unusual noise
• Test washer function to ensure fluid sprays properly
• Verify wipers park in correct position when turned off
• Check for any fluid leaks at washer hose connections
• Ensure wiper arms do not contact hood or cowl during operation
